Lost In The Fifties BCB Band sings Lost In The Fifties by Ronnie Milsap. Bringing back memories of the 50's and slow dancing. Ronnie Milsap was born in Robbinsville, N.C., and was raised by his father and grandparents following his parents' divorce. He was born blind from congenital glaucoma, and when he was 5, he began attending the Governor Moorhead School for the Blind. At 7, his instructors noticed his extraordinary musical talents, and he began to study classical music formally. A single year after he began learning the violin, he was declared a virtuoso. He also mastered piano, guitar and a variety of other stringed instruments, as well as various woodwinds. Eventually, he became interested in rock 'n' roll and while still in school formed his first rock band, the Apparitions. He briefly attended college in Atlanta where he studied pre-law. Though he was awarded a comprehensive scholarship, he decided to become a full-time musician instead. His first professional gig was as a member of J.J. Cale's band in the early '60s. In 1965, Milsap started his own band. Four years later, after having an R&B hit with "Never Had It So Good," he moved to Memphis to become a session musician. There he frequently worked for Chips Moman and can be heard playing keyboards on Elvis Presley's "Kentucky Rain" and singing harmony on "Don't Cry Daddy." When not doing session work, Milsap and his backing group were the house band at T.J.'s Club. In 1970, he had a pop hit with "Loving You Is a Natural Thing." Following its success, he released a self-titled debut album for Warner Bros. in 1971. Two years later, he moved to Nashville to jump-start his flagging career and became a client of Charley Pride's manager, Jack D. Johnson. Within a year, he signed to RCA Victor, where he remained for the bulk of his career. "I Hate You," his first single for RCA, reached the country Top 10 in 1973. The next year, he had three No. 1 hits in a row -- "Pure Love," the Grammy-winning "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends" and "(I'd Be) A Legend in My Time," a cover of Don Gibson's classic. He won his first CMA award in 1974 for male vocalist. A year later, his album A Legend in My Time won the CMA award for album of the year. Milsap had a handful of Top 10 hits in 1975, but in late 1976, he became a genuine star, starting with a string of six No. 1 hits. In 1976, he joined the Grand Ole Opry and won another CMA male vocalist trophy. A year later, he won a Grammy for "(I'm a) Stand by My Woman Man" and captured CMA trophies for entertainer, male vocalist and album of the year (for Ronnie Milsap Live). He also had a number of pop crossover hits, beginning with 1977's "It Was Almost Like a Song." (The album of the same name won a CMA award.) Between 1980 and 1982, Milsap had 10 more consecutive No. 1 hits, including "Smoky Mountain Rain," the Grammy-winning "(There's) No Gettin' Over Me" and "Any Day Now." Borrowing from the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Night," Milsap's "Lost in the Fifties Tonight" single won Grammys in 1985 and 1986, and the album earned the CMA's album of the year. Another Grammy arrived in 1987 for his duet with Kenny Rogers, "Make No Mistake, She's Mine." He had his last No. 1 hit in 1989 with "A Woman in Love." In total, he had 35 No. 1 singles in Billboard, and each of his releases between 1976 and 1991 reached the Top 10. His last single for RCA was issued in 1992. Milsap then signed to Liberty, where he recorded True Believer but only stayed on the roster briefly. Later in the decade, he opened a theater in Myrtle Beach, S.C., as well as a restaurant in Gatlinburg, Tenn. (Both have since closed.) In 2000, he received a double-disc career overview with 40 No. 1 Hits. His 2004 album of standards, Just for a Thrill, received a Grammy nod for best traditional pop recording. In June 2005, Milsap announced he had signed a recording contract with RCA. Tags: BCB Band Oklahoma City Ronnie Milsap |

Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 1 PLEASE READ THIS - This is the dance from the schlock classic, "She Demons" (1958). The film was directed by Richard E Cunha and starred Tod Griffin, Victor Sen Yung and the lovely Irish McCalla in a rare film role. Irish was most famous as the blonde jungle goddess, Sheena Queen of the Jungle (see my numerous clips from that series on Youtube). Please also visit the page about this film on my site - terrororstralis.com. The gals playing the she-demons are The Diane Nellis Dancers. Make sure you check out the poorly-rehearsed jumping knee-slap at about 2m 30s. I am always looking for new ideas for this series. If you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to drop me a line. Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 12 PLEASE READ THIS - Here is the pagan orgy scene from the King Vidor blockbuster, "Solomon and Sheba" (1959). Yul Brynner played Solomon, George Sanders played his scheming brother, Adonijah, and Gina Lollobrigida played the alluring Queen of Sheba. I find it amusing that sanctimonious Christians watching this film nod knowingly when God the Almighty punishes the reveling pagans. Cursed are the party makers, for they shall by barbecued by bolts of lightning. I am always looking for new ideas for this series. If you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to drop me a line. Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 16 PLEASE READ THIS - This is a heavily-edited version of the lengthy Sadie Hawkins Day sequence from Li'l Abner (1959). The film starred Peter Palmer as Li'l Abner Yokum, Leslie Parish as Daisy May and Stella Stevens as Appassionata Von Climax. The statuesque Julie Newmar played Stupefyin' Jones, a female "robot" with the power to stop men dead in their tracks. Five feet eleven Newmar had an IQ of 135 and was best know as Rhoda the Robot in "My Living Doll", and as the first Catwoman on the 60s "Batman" TV series. Ms Newmar also features in Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 28. The film was directed by Melvin Frank and Nelson Riddle contributed original music. And yes, that's Jerry Lewis in a cameo appearance. I am always looking for new ideas for this series. If you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to drop me a line. Fifties Underground (London tube railways) DVD This is a trailer for Yesterday's Britain DVD YB38 Fifties Underground. It is available at the London Transport Museum, Covent Garden, other specialist shops, by phone on 0116 236 2901 and on line from Beulah at http://www.eavb.co.uk The post war London Underground had changed little. A few postponed extensions were opened. Whilst London Transport planners battled with the Government for new trains signalling and the automated Victoria Line, life underground continued unchanged. The training and information films on this DVD reflect these times. SAFETY ON THE TRACK (1951) is primarily designed for track workers. Its is a straight forward film detailing how to work on the track. Then the film moves into Lillie Bridge depot where steam rules supreme. The final incident livens up the film. POWER SIGNAL LINEMAN (1953) demonstrates the work of this important member of the Underground team. Centred on West Ruislip our lineman carries out maintenance and repairs to signals and points. SCHOOL FOR SERVICE (1953) released as London Transport Cine gazette no 11, this film demonstrates the work of the Railway Training Centre at Lambeth North ( replaced in 1962 by a purpose built centre at White City ). Platform staff, booking clerks, signalmen , drivers and guards all passed through the training centre. UNDER NIGHT STREETS (1958) After British Transport Films abandoned the idea of one film to tell how London Transport keeps London moving (Operating London, published on YB37 All That Mighty Heart three films eventually appeared - Overhaul YB30 The London Bus), All That Mighty Heart (YB37) and Under Night Streets. This film tells of the work of the fluffers who cleaned the tunnels each night and of an emergency track gang called out to replace a broken rail. Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 18 PLEASE READ THIS - This dance number also incorporates the wonderful extermination chamber scene from "Missile to the Moon" (1958). This film is similar enough to 1953's "Cat Women of the Moon" to almost be considered a remake. They both share (a) a rocket ship from Earth visting the moon carrying several men and one woman; (b) a civilisation of females living on the moon; (c) a giant moon spider; and (d) undergound moon caverns. It was directed by Richard E Cunha, the genius behind the schlock classic, "She Demons", made the same year (see Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 1). It starred Richard Travis, Cathy Downs and K T Stevens. It also has a couple of very interesting costars. Tommy Cook, who played the obnoxious Kimba in "Tarzan and the Leopard Woman" (1946), plays one of the escaped convicts. See my web page about that film: http://terrororstralis.com/films/b&w/46.htm Zema, one of the moon maids, was played by Leslie Parrish, using her real name, Marjorie Hellen. Ms Parrish also appears in Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 16, as Daisy May in "Li'l Abner" (1959). I am always looking for new ideas for this series. Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 15 PLEASE READ THIS - In this clip Anita Ekberg manages to be quite sexy, despite being a lame bellydancer. The film, Zarak (1956), is set in Afghanistan in the mid-19th century and stars Victor Mature as an Afghan outlaw named Zarak Khan, Michael Wilding as an English officer, Ekberg plays Salma, a harem beauty, and Patrick McGoohan is one of Wilding's army buddies. The film, which was shot in Morocco, was directed by Terence Young, who also directed both "Dr No" (1962) and "From Russia With Love" (1963). I am always looking for new ideas for this series.
