Paul Whiteman - Japanese Sandman 1920/1928 In 1920, Paul Whiteman and his Orch. made a recording of Whispering and The Japanese Sandman. It was enormously successful and catapulted Whiteman to national stardom. The records are not jazz, but are jazzy. Whiteman smoothed the rough edges off jazz thus making it more palatable for the masses. Of course, now he is heavily criticized for this (Whiteman did sometimes play music that was true jazz). He was called the King of Jazz but more appropriately he should be called King of the Jazz Age. Anyway, here is the 1920 record of Japanese Sandman followed by Whiteman's 1928 electrical recording of the same tune. What a dramatic difference in just 6 years. A much more sophisticated arrangement. 蓄音機　ＨＭＶ１３０　ラプソディ・イン・ブルー（抜粋）　フィードラー　ボストンポップス Arthur Fiedler [1894―1979] アメリカの指揮者。ボストン交響楽団員だった父にバイオリンを学び、ついでベルリンに留学。1915年ボストン交響楽団に入団。24年ボストン・シンフォニエッタを組織、指揮活動を始める。30年ボストン・ポップス管弦楽団の常任指揮者となり、死去するまでそのポストにあって、オーケストラの楽しみを大衆に啓蒙(けいもう)するのに大きな役割を果たした。61年（昭和36）初来日。 George Gershwin [1898―1937] 20世紀前半のアメリカを代表する作曲家。貧しいユダヤ系ロシア移民の次男として9月26日ニューヨークのブルックリンに生まれる。兄はのちに作詞家として彼のパートナーとなったアイラIra（1896―1983）。16歳のころリミック音楽出版の店頭ピアニストとして働き、大衆音楽への感受性を養い、同時に歌の作曲を試みるようになる。1917年劇界に入り、18年アル・ジョルソンによって歌われた『スワニー』が大評判をとり、ブロードウェーの作曲家として認められた。軽音楽指揮者ポール・ホワイトマンPaul Whiteman（1890―1967）との交友をきっかけにピアノと管弦楽のための『ラプソディー・イン・ブルー』（1924）を作曲、芸術音楽の方面での才能も高く買われ、28年のパリ旅行ではストラビンスキー、ラベル、ミヨーらとも交友を深めた。パリでの印象をまとめた管弦楽曲『パリのアメリカ人』（1928）はこのときの作品である。30年代にはミュージカル『君がために歌わん』（1931）、オペラ『ポーギーとベス』（1935）などを発表、さらに『踊らん哉(かな)』（1937）などの映画音楽の仕事にもかかわるが、脳腫瘍(しゅよう)のため37年7月11日、38歳で急逝した。ほかに、ピアノと管弦楽のための『ヘ調の協奏曲』（1925）、ミュージカルに『ファニー・フェイス』（1927）、『ガール・クレージー』（1930）などがあり、それらのなかの歌曲はいまも生命を保っている。 Rhapsody in Blue アメリカのジョージ・ガーシュインが1924年に作曲したピアノ協奏曲。ダンス・バンドのリーダーとして活躍していたポール・ホワイトマンが、当時新進のミュージカル作曲家だったガーシュインに作曲を依頼、オーケストレーションはグローフェが担当した。クラリネットの印象的な上昇グリッサンドによって開始され、ジャズ特有の音階やリズムを全曲にちりばめつつ、即興演奏風のスタイルをもったピアノと管弦楽によるコンチェルトが展開される。シンフォニック・ジャズの代表的傑作として名高く、ピアノ独奏や二台のピアノのための異版も残されている。完成後すぐに作曲者自身のピアノ、ホワイトマンとその楽団により、ニューヨークで初演された。 関連サイト http://community.phileweb.com/mypage/entry/235/20080914/7150/ Tags: 蓄音機

Paul Whiteman & His Concert Orchestra - Stardust This is the other extreme of the artistic spectrum. Whiteman's incredibly rich orchestration could not have been a stronger contrast to Carmichael's own intimistic piano solo version (apparently influenced by impressionist classical music), but since this tune is a favorite among Carmichael's compositions, I could not resist uploading this unforgettable performance as well.
