G. Master Rao Zongyi - a super Chinese story 1 国学泰斗绕宗熙 -潮州视台 本片来源潮州广播电视台 CZBTV.COM (My comments) Grand Master (da shi) Rao Zongyi is the last living grand master of traditional Chinese National Studies of multiple Chinese disciplines, a living history and a gift to humanity. Master Rao Zongyi's early works on deciphering the ancient Chinese language of Jiaguwen (written on bones or turtle shells, the predecessor of the Hanzi (modern Chinese characters), ancient Sanskrit Buddhist scriptures, etc., had made possible the establishment of Dunhuang Studies and Research Institute in Beijing. Dunhuang is an ancient Buddhist temple with hundreds of murals covered caves and several hundred of thousands volumes of ancient Buddhist scriptures written by Chinese Buddhist scholars spanning across many Chinese dynasties. Master Rao Zongyi is an internationally well known expert on ancient texts (Chinese Jiaguwen, Indian Sanskrit, Iraqi Babylonian language, etc.). He speaks fluently three Chinese dialects (that I know of e.g. Chaozhou & Guangzhou dialects and Mandarin), French, English, and German. My guess is that he speaks more than one Indian languages (beside Sanskrit). He is also a master of (ancient styles) Chinese calligraphy and painting, etc. He often said that 'without HK there wouldn't be today's Rao Zong Yi', while he is absolutely right about his life circumstance and the unfortunate events that sent him to HK, but HK or other non-Chinese society (even in today's China)could not and will not be able to produce another genius like him. In Chinese history, Master Rao Zongyi has a few peers, but in today's superficial materialistic economic/geopolitical systems(even in hybrid economy like today's China) there just aren't any societal structures/institutions to support and nurture Master Rao Zongyi all encompassing disciplines. Few people can actually understand his volumes of works and these precious works don't sell or make much money, they sit in university archives and museums. Perhaps once in a millennium, nature would produces one such a super human being who not only has the natural intellectual faculty, but could also transcend all man-made distractions to focus his works not for himself but for the good of humanity. Master Rao's father was a University graduated (Chinese literature) man and was the richest man in Chaozhou prefecture. His father passed away when he was a teenager, traditionally the oldest son must shoulder the family responsibility, but money and business just didn't appeal to him, and he continued to choose knowledge over wealth. At the at age of 29, he completed his father's research works and published two books "The Geography of Chu Kingdom" and "The Language Arts of Chaozhou". It took him ten years to complete his father's works and wishes while working full time to run his father businesses at the same time. As he devoted more time to read and research, the family businesses suffered and under his supervision, his family's wealth was greatly depleted... Considering he had only a few years of former primary school education (never graduated). As a young boy, his real education consisted of reading books in his father's library, listening and learning from his father's literary circle who met regularly in his family backyard in Chaozhou. By the time he reached school age, he had read several books in his father's library, there was nothing for him to learn in grade school, so after a year, his father took him out of school and gave him the key to library "you read whatever books you like, just read" and he read, read, and read all by himself...Did he understand all those books, absolutely yes! How do we know? Consider the following: For decades, the French universities had their hands on Dunhuang Buddhist scrolls (from colonial looting, surprise!) and the Japanese universities had a large volume of Jiaguwen collections that they stole from Chinese imperial palaces, but both the French and the Japanese couldn't figure out what those writings meant. But in less than 10 years, Master Rao Zongyi almost single-handedly were able to decipher all the Jiaguwen texts and Dunhuang scrolls in the archives of Japanese and French universities, together with the rest of materials preserved in China, he cataloged and translated them into modern Chinese, and published them for the world to see. This is a gift from a Chinese genius to all humanity. This is a giant contribution for the understanding of and ancient civilizations and human potentials as a species. Why do we need to understand ancient Dunhuang scriptures? * Dunhuang Buddhist scriptures are proof that there were ancient people that came before us who had thought of better ways for sustainable relationship among us human beings and that of man and nature. * Dunhuang is proof that not all religions are violent 'the high of the mass' like Judaism, Christianity and Islam. * Dunhuang is an example of how a highly cultivated civilization can pursue intellectual endeavor, artistic and literary excellence, and cultural cultivations without the kind of sex-and-violence that seems pervasive in Europe, America and Japan nowadays. Entertainments yes, but always in modesty and moderation. SOCIETY HARMONY OVER MAN-MADE IDEOLOGIES! LASTLY, to the ignorant ideologues from US, UK, and Germany, IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU IDIOTS BEGIN TO LEARN ABOUT RESPONSIBLE FREEDOM, AND THE TRUE MEANING OF RESPONSIBLE HUMAN RIGHTS.
