The Karmapa is the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, one of the four great lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. His line of successive reincarnations has its origins in the 13th century when it was the first to identify tulkus, reincarnations of Buddhist teachers. He is recognized as the embodiment of the teachings of his lineage, one that traces its source from teacher to disciple through Tibet's great teachers Milarepa and Marpa to India's Naropa and Tilopa all the way back to the Shakyamuni Buddha. Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, was born in Tibet in 1924. During the 1959 invasion by the People's Republic of China, the Karmapa left Tibet and settled in Rumtek, Sikkim, India. The construction of his new Rumtek monastery was completed in 1966. In 1974, the Karmapa set out on his first world tour; he undertook a second tour in 1977. While traveling in 1981, he died in Zion, Illinois, north of Chicago. He was returned to Rumtek for cremation. The film journeys with him in North America where he visited the Hopi Nation, offered teachings and performed the Black Crown Ceremony (Vajra Makut), enjoyed everything from zoos to video arcades, and initiated the construction of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in Woodstock, New York, the seat of his lineage in North America. His cremation in Rumtek is vividly documented. The narration script was written by the late Rick Fields, the well-known author of How the Swans Came to the Lake and a founding editor of Tricycle and The Vajradhatu Sun. Pink Fairies Roundhouse February 16th 1975 Short clip - Pink Fairies first Roundhouse reunion gig of 1975 - February 16th. The bill featured Hawkwind, Pink Fairies, Al Matthews, and Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy. Pink Fairies line-up consisted of Russell Hunter, Paul Rudolph, Duncan 'Sandy' Sanderson, and Larry Wallis. Mick Farren also made a guest appearance and can be briefly seen during the clip. The original footage has been around for some years but the quality has obviously deteriorated having been transferred onto VHS at some point and finally digitalised.* The soundtracks are not synchronised with the film footage although they do derive from the relevant performances. * Tony Davdison (Tonal) out of Pink Fairies covers band Pink FA has shed light on the provenance of the footage - "the video you have on myspace was shot on 8mm by Geoff Eade,He showed me it in 1978 when I joined his band the infamous Drag Squad who released the equally infamous 'Operation Julie' 7" single.a singer very much in the Farren mould. In 1992 I remember this & for the reason of social history I get my mate to transfer it to video......Geoff & I thought of getting someone to put it out....UFO of Hanway Street came to mind as they had just released 'Syd's First Trip'....also silent....of course nowt could be done...so my mate Richard Clarke fronts the money & it sells about 10 copies!!........." Flick - World Premiere - The 16th Raindance Film Festival 08 London: 3 October 2008 The first half of October in London brings the Raindance Independent Film Festival. Now in its 16th year, the festival always attracts notables and some great films. Flick is one. The Trocadero was the venue and as its an inside gig, the weather didnt matter for once. The lure of Faye Dunaway of Bonnie and Clyde fame was too much to resist and I stumped up ten quid to see the movie and get a front row seat for the fascinating Q&A afterwards. That was a bargain as it turned out compared to the price of a soft drink! Stars and creatives were very happy to sign and pose with fans inside the foyer with some wanting four or five items signed. Check out ebay later ;-) aye. I got an extra bonus, being able to practice my role as a capturista several other celebs emerged from another festival screening right in front of my lens. So a good night; stars, not freezing in the cold, a great film and some extra celebs to close off a great session.
