Atlanta 1996 OC-American Civil War (1861-1865) & Rebuilding This clip highlights a DRAMATIZATION of the most traumatic part of American history: the four-year American Civil War of 1861 to 1865. The state of Georgia was part of the Confederate States of America then, with ten (10) other states at the time. The American states of Missouri and Kentucky were asked to join, but never did officially so. The city and area of Atlanta was the scene of three (3) major battles and several small skirmishes. As the result, the city was completely destroyed on November 11th, 1864. The city's population at the time did not reach 10,000 people. After that, the rebuilding and the re-imaging of Atlanta continues to this day. In this clip, the "thunderbird" symbolized the fires of war that ravaged the American South, while the butterflies, in their new form, symbolize the Reconstruction of the entire region.
