Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): Hungarian Dance no.1 This is the (in)famous 1889 cylinder recording made of Brahms playing the piano. After a spoken introduction ("House von [of] Herr Doctor Fellinger, I have Doctor Brahms, Johannes Brahms"), Brahms plays an abbreviated form of his first Hungarian Dance. The cylinder is almost inaudible. However, this recording, which I have pieced together from a variety of different sampled and digitised sources and subsequently overlaid on top of each other, seems to be better than any other I have come across, so I am posting it here as well. If you already know the piece, you'll be able to hear what Brahms sounds like. If you don't know the piece... well, you might be a little lost in this one. A Victorian Power Canal Massena NY Photo Album 1897-1900 This massena photo album covers a span of three years in local history where the community grew dramatically with the construction of the new pittsburgh reduction company power canal -- later the aluminum company of america. businessman and former president of massena henry h. warren is credited with getting the financial backers to build the canal. it was a battle he never gave up with many legal and other issues. many immigrants traveled from europe and new york city to assist with the canal. hotels and boarding house were filled to capacity and the population doubled at this time. many new homes and buildings where also built around massena. featured in ths album is the power canal being constructed, downtown massena, inside sacred heart church, the hotels, the immigrant homes of white's city, baseball hall of famer john "bid" mcphee, and massena springs. it was also signaled the near end of another era in massena -- the last few years of the popular massena springs resort of drinking and bathing in the mineral water. THE FULL VERSION OF A MASSENA PHOTO ALBUM 1897- 2007 is now on sale. the movie is 90 minutes long with over 500 photos and interviews and me as the host. contact me for a copy through here.
