The Great Air Race - England to Melbourne 1934 The MacRobertson Trophy Air Race took place October, 1934 as part of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. The idea of the race was devised by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, and a prize fund of $75,000 was put up by Sir Macpherson Robertson, a wealthy Australian confectionery manufacturer, on the conditions that the race be named after his MacRobertson confectionery company, and that it be organised to be as safe as possible. The race was organised by the Royal Aero Club and would run from RAF Mildenhall in East Anglia to Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne. There were 5 compulsory stops at Baghdad, Allahabad, Singapore, Darwin and Charleville, Queensland, otherwise the competitors could choose their own routes. A further 22 optional stops were provided with stocks of fuel and oil by Shell and Stanavo. The Royal Aero Club put some effort into persuading the countries along the route to improve the facilities at the stopping points. The basic rules were: no limit to the size of aircraft or power, no limit to crew size, no pilot to join aircraft after it left England. Aircraft must carry three days' rations per crew member, floats, smoke signals and efficient instruments. There were prizes for the outright fastest aircraft, and for the best performance on a handicap formula by any aircraft finishing within 16 days. Take off date was set at dawn (6:30) October 20, 1934. The initial field of over 60 had by then been whittled down to 20, including the 3 purpose-built de Havilland DH.88 Comet racers, two of the new generation of American all-metal passenger transports, and a mixture of earlier racers, light transports and old bombers. First off the line, watched by a crowd of 60,000, were Jim & Amy Mollison in the Comet Black Magic, and they were early leaders in the race until forced to retire at Allahabad with engine trouble. This left the scarlet Comet Grosvenor House flown by Flight Lt. Charles Scott and Captain Tom Campbell Black well ahead of the field. This racer went on to win in a time of less than 3 days, despite flying the last stage with one engine throttled back because of an oil-pressure indicator giving a faulty low reading. Perhaps more significantly in the development of popular long-distance air travel, the second and third places were taken by passenger transports, with the KLM Douglas DC-2 Uiver gaining a narrow advantage over Roscoe Turner's Boeing 247-D, both completing the course less than a day behind the winner. The most dramatic part of the race was when the Uiver, hopelessly lost after becoming caught in a thunderstorm, ended up over Albury NSW. The townsfolk responded magnificently - an engineer at the power station signalled "Albury" to the plane by turning the town lights on and off, and an announcer on radio station 2CO Corowa appealed for cars to line up on the racecourse to light up a runway for the plane. The plane landed, and next morning was pulled out of the mud by locals to fly on and win the handicap section of the race. In gratitude KLM made a large donation to Albury Hospital and Alf Waugh, the Mayor of Albury, was awarded a title in Dutch nobility. Tarzan: 1934 Nude Swim Scene - Jane Skinny Dipping In this scene from Johnny Weissmuller's second feature film, Tarzan and His Mate, Jane goes swimming naked with her jungle lover. The producers got away with this at first due to the fact that the FCC had not yet been created; however, the scene was quickly removed due to complaints from religious groups and mad mothers. Note the small breast size of Underwater Jane as compared to the more buxom Landlubber Jane. That's because Maureen O'Sullivan did not perform in this particular scene. Instead, Olympic swimmer Josephine McKim was used as a double for Miss O'Sullivan. The decision was not made because of any modesty issues. The skimpy costume Maureen wears throughout the film proves that she wasn't shy about showing her body. It was simply agreed that the grace of a professional swimmer would be more pleasing for the audience. Maureen's revealing jungle costume in Tarzan and His Mate was another thing that drew complaints from the bluenoses; therefore, in all future Tarzan films, Jane's body was to be significantly more covered up. Thanks to Ted Turner for putting this classic scene back into the classic film where it belongs. Harvey's 1934 Harley Harvey is a native of central Illinois and a retired Caterpillar engineer. As a teenager in the fifties he swapped his Cushman scooter for this '34 Harley chassis that included a WWII WLA motor. I persuaded him to let me wheel it out of the barn on a scorching August afternoon for a photo-op. He's not sure exactly how he'll restore it but over the years he has managed to acquire a couple of nice vintage motors, a '33 & '34, just in case he decides to go that way ... Busby Berkeley Fashions of 1934 The signature Busby Berkeley production number starts about one third of the way into this clip and is worth waiting for, especially the overhead "Rose" shots. This sequence from the movie Fashions of 1934 features the song "Spin A Little Web of Dreams." The principal cast of the movie includes William Powell, Bette Davis, Verree Teasdale, and Hugh Herbert. Bette Davis complained bitterly when Warner Brothers put her in a platinum blonde wig and gown. She claimed they were trying to transform her into a third rate imitation of an MGM glamor queen, an obvious shot at Greta Garbo. Not one of Busby Berkeley's better known movies, the problem with "Fasions of 1934" was with the movie itself and not with the contributions of Busby Berkeley. The Hayes Production Code was in full force in 1934, but that did not stop Berkeley's usual portrayal of enthralling feminine assets while staying within the letter of the Hayes Code. Anne of Green Gables (1934) - 11 The Distinguished Herbert Root. This is a new "adventure" for Anne, dreamed up by the screenwriter of this 1934 adaptation. It's true to the spirit of Anne's calamities, in that Anne's imagination (and, perhaps, her vanity) has gone too far and gotten her in trouble. But it also veers dangerously away from one of Anne's signature traits, her honesty. It is not very Anne-like for her to deceive her school chums, including her bosom-friend Diana, and then insist on keeping up a false pretense to sustain some undeserved status. Anne succeeds in school very well on her own merits, thank you very much. That said, Anne Shirley (the actress) does a very credible job of getting herself into this mess. Overall her characterization of Anne has both vitality and variety. She makes many of the lines, the "Anne-isms" of the book, come alive. Tags: Anne Green Gables Shirley |

Busby Berkeley Wonder Bar 1934 Busby Berkeley staged this production number for the 1934 movie adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wonder Bar." The number is "Don't Say Goodnight" with Dick Powell. Do you think Busby used mirrors for the effects in this number? The movie starred Al Jolsen, Kay Frances, Dolores Del Rio, Dick Powell, and the ever present Guy Kibbee and Hugh Herbert. The movie is set in a parisian nightclub where an elaborate romance is unfolding. This movie is not likely to be seen these days because it includes a blackface minstrel show finale, which I will not upload, so don't ask. It also includes a scene where a man cuts into a dance and dances with the man, not the woman. Again, don't ask. These two scenes were somewhat controversial even in 1934, and the movie almost was unable to receive the required Hayes Production Code certification. It Happened One Night 1/12 (1934) Ellie Andrews has just tied the knot with society aviator King Westley when she is whisked away to her father's yacht and out of King's clutches. Ellie jumps ship and eventually winds up on a bus headed back to her husband. Reluctantly she must accept the help of out-of- work reporter Peter Warne. Actually, Warne doesn't give her any choice: either she sticks with him until he gets her back to her husband, or he'll blow the whistle on Ellie to her father. Either way, Peter gets what (he thinks!) he wants .... a really juicy newspaper story. Won 5 Oscars, another 3 wins and 1 nomination.
