Coney Island of the 1940's Coney Island, "the place where merriment is king!" Take a trip back in time 50 years before the Mermaid Parade. See masses of old school New Yorkers beat the heat by hitting the beach. See Side Shows! Carnies! Freaks! Thrill rides! Includes the original Coney Island Hot Dog, the Bathing Girl Review, and people getting sick on rides. Not to mention the Tiger Rag, if 1940's Coney Island existed today an insurance agent would have a field day. Still, 1940's Coney Island kicks the ass of most modern amusement parks any day. Progressive Education in the 1940s This video presents a positive view of progressive education although it begins with a parent complaining that children are not learning the fundamentals. Various educators are seen including famed John Dewey. One skeptic asserts that ideas similar to progressive education caused a collapse of the ancient Greek civilization. Current debates about educational techniques in many respects seem similar to what was occurring in the 1940s. Tags: progressive-education 1940s John-Dewey |

Compilation of Hibari Misora's songs-1940s Hibari Misora recorded a total of 2 songs in the 1940s, both of them in 1949. They were; 1. 河童ブギウギ(Kappa Boogie Woogie) 2. 悲しき口笛(Kanashiki Kuchibue) (Which translates to "Sad Whistle") I've uploaded both of them here. Kappa Boogie Woogie is her debut song of what is going to be a total of over 1500 songs she will record in the next four decades until her death in 1989. For those wondering what a Kappa is, it's a Japanese imaginary creature, green or yellow in colour, and translates to 'river child'. They resemble the looks of monkeys with tortoise shells on their backs. Young Hibari, 12 years old at the time, dressed up as one in the movie 'Odoru Ryugujyou' and sang this song.It is apparent that this song was not her favourite, as she later recalled in her interviews that dressing up like a Kappa was simply embarassing, and considers her next song, 'Kanashiki Kuchibue' to be her true debut song. She recorded 'Kanashiki Kuchibue' a total of four times during her entire career. This version is the original. Please rate, comment and enjoy!! Gravity (Highlights) - 1940s ThinkStream films simply thinks this film is just wrong on multiple dimensions. First off, there's this older dude who seems to have a highly suspect relationship with little boy Bob. He justifies it by saying that he knows Bob because he's an engineer and works in the same plant as his dad...." Hmmm... Well, anyway, he takes him to the "plant;" however, the "plant" old dude takes Bob to looks suspiciously like a house. Actually, it is a house. In no known universe is this place a "plant!" And of course, he just happens to have a rather large, framed portrait of Sir Issac Newton hanging on the wall! After getting over the initial shock, we here at ThinkStream films (especially Mr. Projector) think the folks at Coronet were having a bit of fun with this one, so we decided to have a bit of fun with it on the editing table. Enjoy! Note: The following clip was taken directly from the original 16mm print and has been edited (with love and fun) to a fraction of the film's original length. Bid on the complete, original 16mm print on eBay through 11/6/2006 Tags: 16mm 1940s educational film gravity newton earth kid |

Public Speaking, Movement and Gesture (Highlights) - 1940s This film is pure nostalgia! Great for training in the office as an ice-breaker (Oh, the things we had to do in the days before PowerPoint! This early Coronet film takes us through the basics of effective public speaking, with its focus on body posture and gestures. There is some very funny footage here; especially in the scene demonstrating how not to make gestures when speaking (what a forensic geek this dude is!). The final "live" speech is great in that it is about nuclear energy! The speaker's motions are so calculated (albeit exaggerated for example), they are counter-productive to the film's lesson and ultimately distract from what the speaker is trying to say. Great film. See the complete original print of this film for auction on eBay through 10/23! Note: The following clip was taken directly from the original 16mm print and has been edited to approximately half the film's original length. Unionization at Ford in 1930s and early 1940s Ford was considered the model of manufacturing technology in the 1920s. By offering the $5 day, and other benefits, Ford was also considered a model employer. The Great Depression changed that perception and worker unrest led to a unionization drive. Ford was more resistant than the other "Big-3" auto companies (GM and Chrysler) and was the last to unionize on the eve of WW2. Tags: Ford unions UAW |

British Film from the 1940s Highlights U.S. Diversity The 1946 British film "Stairway to Heaven" (British title: "A Matter of Life or Death") was made to rejuvenate Anglo-American friendship by reminding Americans of the World War II alliance. Britain was trying to obtain U.S. foreign aid to rebuild after suffering substantial wartime damage. The film was made before the Marshall Plan came along to provide such aid. In the 1940s, many Americans still viewed Britain suspiciously as imperialistic and the center of world financial domination. The film is a fantasy characteristic of the period. Scenes on Earth are in color; scenes in Heaven are in black and white. The jury selection scene here points to British interest in American population diversity. Although the U.S. had severely limited immigration in the 1920s, there was a substantial immigrant and second-generation population. In contrast, in Britain in the 1940s, there was a much more homogeneous population and immigrants - to the extent there were immigrants - were largely from Ireland. The excerpt here is from the jury selection scene in Heaven and highlights U.S. diversity. The prosecutor is an American patriot from the Revolutionary War era. A plot summary, largely from IMDB.COM, follows: Returning to England from a bombing run in May 1945, flyer Peter Carter's plane is damaged and his parachute ripped to shreds. He has his crew bail out safely, but figures it is curtains for himself. He gets on the radio, and talks to June, a young American woman working for the RAF, and they are quite moved by each other's voices. Then he jumps, preferring this to burning up with his plane. He wakes up in the surf. It was his time to die, but there was a mixup in Heaven. They couldn't find him in all that Channel fog. By the time his "Conductor" catches up with him 20 hours later, Peter and June have met and fallen in love. This changes everything, and since it happened through no fault of his own, Peter figures that Heaven owes him a second chance. Heaven agrees to a trial to decide his fate. The film leaves it ambiguous as to whether the conductor and trial are hallucinations cause by a brain injury or are "real." The trial takes place during Peter's Earthly brain surgery.
