1944 Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference This newsreel excerpt briefly describes the international monetary conference of 1944 (before WW2 ended), held at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The conference founded the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The fixed exchange rate system created at the conference came under increasing strain in the 1960s and was ended unilaterally by President Nixon in 1971. The Warsaw Uprising 1944 / Powstanie Warszawskie The Warsaw Uprising (Powstanie Warszawskie) was a World War II struggle by the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. The Uprising began on August 1, 1944, as part of a nationwide rebellion, Operation Tempest. It was intended to last for only a few days until the Soviet Army would reach the city. The Soviet advance stopped short, however, while Polish resistance against the German forces continued for 63 days (until October 2). The Uprising began at a crucial juncture as the Soviet Army was approaching Warsaw. The Uprising's chief objective was to drive the German occupiers from the city, helping with the larger fight against the Axis. Secondary political objectives were to liberate Warsaw before the Red Army arrived, so as to underscore Polish sovereignty, and to undo the Allied division of Central Europe into spheres of influence. Polish authorities were to reappear in liberated Warsaw and challenge the Soviet puppet government that was to rule Poland. By September 16, 1944, Soviet forces had reached a point a few hundred metres from the city, across the Vistula River, but they made no further headway during the Uprising leading to allegations that Stalin had wanted the insurrection to fail. Polish losses amounted to 18,000 soldiers killed and 25,000 wounded, in addition to between 120,000 and 200,000 civilian deaths, mostly from mass murders conducted by retreating German troops. German casualties totalled over 17,000 soldiers killed and over 9,000 wounded. During the urban combat approximately 25% of Warsaw's buildings were destroyed. Following the surrender of Polish forces on October 2, German troops systematically burned the city block by block. Together with earlier damage suffered in 1939 and during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (1943), over 85% of the city had been destroyed. By January 1945, when the Soviets finally entered the city, Warsaw had practically ceased to exist. Normandy invasion (1944): D-Day German footage Combat footage. Die Deutsche Wochenschau. 6th June 1944, Normandy invasion from German perspective. As late as 13:35 the German 352nd division was reporting that the assault had been hurled back into the sea. From their vantage point at Pointe de la Percée overlooking the whole of the beach from the western end the German perception was that the assault had been stopped at the beach. An officer there noted that troops were seeking cover behind obstacles and counted ten tanks burning. However, as early as 07:35 the third battalion 726th Grenadier Regiment, defending Draw F-1 on Fox Green beach, was reporting that 100--200 American troops had penetrated its front, with enemy inside the wire at WN-62 and WN-61 under attack from the rear. Casualties amongst the defenders were mounting and at the same time that the 916th regiment, defending the centre of the 352nd zone, was reporting that the landings had been frustrated, it was also requesting reinforcement. The request could not be met because the situation elsewhere in Normandy was becoming more urgent for the defenders. Tags: Schlager 40s DE Hans Albers La Paloma Filmausschnitt 1944 |

Adam Aston - Czerwone maki na Monte Cassino, 1944 Adam Aston (Adolf Loewensohn) was one of three or four most popular pre-war "crooners" in Poland. His performances of the Polish as well as international hits, called in Poland with the German word, the "schlagers" - remained on Odeon, Columbia or Syrena-Electro records as masterpieces of the singing art - dramatic, strong, and sung with his stunning Jewish cantor-like tenor/baritone entirely free from any sentimental manner of the era. When in September 1939 Nazi troops invaded Poland and WWII broke out, that king of Polish "Tin Pan Alley business" managed to flee to Eastern part of Poland - in the meanwhile taken by Soviet army, who, according to Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, attacked Poland from the east as the Hitler's loyaliest ally. In those gloomy days Aston followed the way of millions of Polish citizens living there: hundreds of thousands were killed, hundreds of thousands - deported by the Soviets into deep Russia. Yet, he managed to survive again through this Polish Apocalypse and, as soon as the Nazis attacked Russia in June 1942, he joined the Polish army being formed by General Władysław Anders -- according to the quickly made pact Sikorski-Stalin -- from those of Polish officers and soldiers, who survived the Stalinist labor camps or were not massacred in Katyn -- the place of the XXth Century Polish Apocalypse in Russia. In 1943, together with the Anders' army, Aston left Soviet Union and marched to Iran, to Palestine, Tobruk & Italy, together with the Western allies. He was not needed by his colleagues, who remembered him from the records, as the shooting soldier - they wanted him to sing! So he did - in the army's Revue Theatre formed by Henryk Wars - his pre-war friend from Warsaw cabarets and from the recordings they were making together for "Syrena Electro"! This is how this absolutely unique, wonderful recording was born. It says about "The Red Poppies On The Mountain Of Cassino" where a 1000- year Cistercian monastery stands and where in May 1944 one of the bloodiest battles for the freedom of Europe took place. Poles had about 1100 victims there - while all allied Anglo-French forces 8000. This song sings about the poppies so read, for they grow from the Polish blood sunk into the soil. Recording was made for: La Voce del Padrone. Disco Grammofono. N. 176 Subtitles on the label: Płyta Polska. 2 Korpus Polski - Wydział Dobrobytu Żołnierza. Baryton-solo P.W.O. SNAFU - CAMOUFLAGE - 1944 The name "Private Snafu" comes from the unofficial military acronym SNAFU, for "Situation Normal: All Fucked Up." This was deemed too-strong language even for their target audience, so the opening narrator merely hinted at its meaning: "Situation Normal ... All Fouled Up!" Private Snafu is the title character of a series of black-and-white American instructional cartoon shorts produced between 1943 and 1945 during World War II. The character was created by director Frank Capra, chairman of the U.S. Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit, and some of the shorts were written by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. Although the United States Army gave Walt Disney Studios the first crack at creating the cartoons, Leon Schlesinger of the Warner Bros. animation studio underbid Disney by two-thirds and won the contract. Disney had also demanded exclusive ownership of the character, and merchandising rights. Most of the Private Snafu shorts are educational, and although the War Department had to approve the storyboards, the Warner directors were allowed great latitude in order to keep the cartoons entertaining. Through his irresponsible behavior, Snafu demonstrates to soldiers what not to do while at war. In "Malaria Mike", for example, Snafu neglects to take his malaria medications or to use his repellant, allowing a suave mosquito to get him in the end—literally. In "Spies", Snafu leaks classified information a little at a time until the Germans and Japanese piece it together and sink his transport ship. Later in the war, however, Snafu's antics became more like those of fellow Warner alum Bugs Bunny, a savvy hero facing the enemy head-on. The cartoons were intended for an audience of soldiers (as part of the bi-weekly "Army-Navy Screen Magazine" newsreel), and so are quite risqué by 1940's standards, with minor cursing, bare-bottomed GIs, and plenty of scantily clad women. The depictions of Japanese and Germans are quite racist by today's standards, but were par for the course in wartime U.S. Nine of the Snafu shorts feature a character named Technical Fairy, First Class. The Technical Fairy is a crass, shirtless, miniature G.I. whose fairy wings bear the insignia of a Technical Sergeant. He would appear and grant Snafu's wishes, most of which involve skipping protocol or trying to do things the quick and sloppy way. The results typically end tragically, with the Technical Fairy teaching Snafu a valuable lesson about proper military procedure. The Snafu shorts are notable because they were produced during the Golden Age of Warner Bros. animation. Directors such as Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett, and Frank Tashlin worked on them, and their characteristic styles are in top form. P. D. Eastman was a writer and storyboard artist for the Snafu shorts. Voice characterizations were provided by the celebrated Mel Blanc (Private Snafu's voice was similar to Blanc's Bugs Bunny characterization). Toward the end of the war, other studios began producing Snafu shorts as well (the Army accused Schlesinger of padding his bills), though some of these never made it to celluloid before the war ended. The Snafu films are also partly responsible for keeping the animation studios open during the war—by producing such training films, the studios were declared an essential industry. After the war, the Snafu cartoons went largely forgotten. Prints eventually wound up in the hands of collectors, and these form the basis for The Complete, Uncensored Private Snafu, a VHS and DVD collection from Bosko Video. Bosko's collection is currently the only one available, but it has been criticized for the poor quality of its transfer. Warner Home Video has begun including Private Snafu shorts as bonus material on their Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD sets as of the third volume. Six have been included so far—three per set—with more, presumably, to follow. Tags: private snafu army warner brothers cartoon ww2 war |

Boyd Coddington's (1944-2008) funeral A short video from the funeral procession. Rest in peace, Boyd. ---------------------------------- Boyd, whenever there are clouds in the heavens, we'll know it's you showing God how to do a great burnout. ---------------------------------- Discovery mourns the passing of automotive industry legend and AMERICAN HOT ROD host Boyd Coddington. Boyd passed away on the morning of February 27 and will be missed by family, friends and fans around the world. Boyd's passion for hand-crafting cars began in his childhood, on a small farm outside of Rupert, Idaho. It was here that he began building cars from scratch at the age of 13. At the age of 22, Boyd moved to the hot rodding capital of the world - Southern California. It wasn't long before Boyd established a reputation for craftsmanship and imaginative detailing. It was there that he opened his own shop in 1978. Boyd would soon be inventing custom cars for superstars such as ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Van Halen's Michael Anthony. Boyd earned many awards including seven wins for America's Most Beautiful Roadsters, the prestigious Riddler Award, and Builder of the Year at the Grand National Roadster Show. He also holds the distinction of designing the first and only hot rod in The Smithsonian Museum of American History, and the first to grace the cover of Smithsonian magazine. Boyd's designs helped establish the idea of what a hot rod is. His work inspired many including the next generation of custom-building superstars - both Chip Foose and Jesse James are alumni of his shop. One of Boyd's most cherished creations is The Coddington Foundation, a public benefit, not-for-profit organization that he and his wife Jo created.
