Jazz-Lakers 110-120 Game2 PO08[Williams 25p vs Bryant 34pts] LOS ANGELES, May 7, 2008 (AP) -- Kobe Bryant couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate his first MVP award. He had 34 points, eight rebounds and six assists Wednesday night, and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Utah Jazz 120-110 to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals and remain the NBA's only unbeaten team in the postseason. Bryant received his Most Valuable Player trophy from NBA commissioner David Stern in a brief ceremony before the game. "I'm at a loss for words, I don't know what to say," Bryant said as the Staples Center crowd of 18,997 roared its approval and chanted M-V-P. "I love you guys so much. We're going to play until June. Let's get this party started." The 29-year-old Bryant was a runaway winner, receiving 82 first-place votes and 1,100 points to far outdistance New Orleans' Chris Paul in the voting of 126 media members. The results were announced Tuesday. Following the presentation, Bryant's wife and two young daughters gave him with a bouquet of flowers at center court. "It was an emotional night for all of us," Bryant said after the game. "We haven't seen Staples Center this electric. It gave me goose bumps. You want to ride the momentum, and we were able to do that." The Lakers made their first six shots, and after falling behind 13-12, Bryant scored six points during a 13-0 run that put them ahead for good. "We were never able to gather momentum in the second half, but we never really had that point where we felt threatened in this ballgame," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We felt that the offense was going well, we were doing things we wanted to do." The series shifts to Utah for Games 3 and 4 on Friday night and Sunday. The Jazz had an NBA-best 37-4 home record this season, but one of the losses was by 11 points to the Lakers on March 20. "No expectations, no disappointments," Jackson said regarding the games in Utah. "We've got to control the tempo, we've got to control the pace. That's big in Utah," Bryant said. "We're a pretty good road team. We're really looking forward to it." Derek Fisher, who played for Utah last season, added 22 points, Pau Gasol scored 20, and Lamar Odom had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Lakers, who shot 57.4 percent from the field and made 35 free throws -- 22 more than the Jazz. "We can't foul them," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We've put them at the line 89 times [in two games]. That's way too many. That was the difference in the game, free throws." Seven Utah players scored in double figures led by Deron Williams, who had 25 points, including three 3-pointers in the last 33 seconds, and 10 assists. Paul Millsap added a career playoff-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, Mehmet Okur had 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and five blocked shots, and Andrei Kirilenko scored 14 points. Okur and Kirilenko both fouled out in the final minute. Carlos Boozer was held to 10 points -- all in the second half. He played less than seven minutes in the first half because of foul trouble. "We feel like we've been in both games, we just haven't been able to get over the hump," Utah's Kyle Korver said. The Jazz outrebounded the Lakers 58-41 in Game 1, but lost 109-98. They won the battle of the backboards again 41-37, but shot 44.6 percent while attempting a season-high 101 shots -- 33 more than Los Angeles. "There's no need to panic, but they're definitely in control right now," said Williams, who scored three points in the first half. "We've got to protect our homecourt. These next two games are must-wins. If we're down 3-1, it's going to be tough to come back from." The Jazz outscored the Lakers 11-4 to get within five points with just under six minutes to play. But a jumper by Sasha Vujacic, a 3-pointer by Fisher and a free throw by Gasol extended the Lakers' lead to 105-94 with 4:26 left. A three-point play by Kirilenko made it 107-99 before Bryant fed Gasol for a dunk with 2:40 to go, and the Jazz weren't closer than six points after that. "It's a great day for us today," Odom said. "We just fed off the crowd." The Jazz drew within nine points early in the third quarter before Bryant outscored them 9-4 by himself to make it 82-68. A 3-pointer by Williams with 1.5 seconds left in the third quarter trimmed the Lakers' lead to 93-83. The Lakers led 55-40 before Williams made a 3-pointer for his only points of the first half. It was 63-49 at halftime, and it might have been worse for the Jazz had Millsap not scored 13 points -- three more than his previous playoff high. Celtics-Lakers 98-103 Gm5 Finals08[Pierce 38p vs Bryant 25p] LOS ANGELES, June 15, 2008 (AP) -- As purple-and-gold streamers rained down, Lamar Odom shook his head in approval, Derek Fisher caressed the game ball against his chest and Kobe Bryant clapped his hands before striding from the floor. "I love L.A.'' blared through the speakers and "Not In Our House!'' flashed on the scoreboard. The P.A. announcer cried, "This is not over yet!'' The Los Angeles Lakers aren't done playing. The NBA finals are headed East. Bryant scored 25 points - including a decisive dunk in the final minute - and Odom added 20 as the Lakers, playing with pride on their star-studded stage, prevented the Boston Celtics from winning a 17th title with a 103-98 win in Game 5 on Sunday night to close to 3-2 in this restored rivalry. "We didn't want to see any champagne popping,'' Odom said. "It wasn't easy. I wouldn't expect it to be.'' No team has overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals to win a title. The first 28 failed, and now the Lakers, who blew a 24-point lead and lost Game 4 and nearly squandered a 19-point lead in Game 5, have a chance to do something extraordinary. They'll have to win on the Celtics' parquet floor Tuesday night to force a winner-take-all Game 7, where anything is possible. Especially with Bryant, the game's best player, on hand. "In training camp if you told us, 'We'll give you two games that you have to win to win a world championship,' we would have taken it in a heartbeat,'' Bryant said. "This is a great opportunity for us.'' The league's MVP and ultimate finisher isn't finished yet. On a night when Bryant didn't have his best game, the other Lakers came up big. Pau Gasol had 19 points and 13 rebounds, Odom had 11 rebounds and four blocks, Fisher added 15 points and Jordan Farmar came off the bench to get 11. "We were aggressive. We played hard,'' Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Not smart all the time, but we played hard.'' Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 38 points and played all but two seconds. Kevin Garnett added 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Ray Allen had 16 points. But Boston's Big Three couldn't close out their first chance at winning it all, and now will get two cracks at home. Following the game, Allen left the arena immediately because of an undisclosed health issue with one of his children. The Celtics, trying to win their first title since 1986, are consoled by the fact they are going home. They are 47-7 at TD Banknorth Garden this season. "We wanted to go back home, but we didn't want to play,'' coach Doc Rivers said. "But now we have to play, and we earned that right. That's why the regular season is so important. We fought for it all year. We have Game 6 at home, and that's not a bad place to be.'' After scoring 15 points in the first quarter, Bryant went cold from the floor and finished just 8-of-21. But he made a big steal, poking the ball away from Pierce and streaking down to deliver a two-handed dunk with 37.4 seconds left. "I just was kind of reading the play and I was able to get my hands on the ball and get out and get a dunk,'' Bryant said. The Celtics called a timeout, superfan Jack Nicholson jumped to his feet and the scoreboard in Staples Center flashed: Not In Our House! On Saturday, Bryant had said "this is far from over,'' and he could be right. Accused of being selfish and too tough on his not-as-talented teammates, Bryant can bow to the other Lakers for sending the series back across country. Gasol, the 7-foot Spanish center criticized for being pillowy soft, didn't back down underneath and was able to get Garnett into foul trouble. But just as they did in Game 4, when they staged the biggest comeback in finals history, the Celtics pushed the Lakers to the brink of summer with another rally. This one fell a little short, but the outcome was still in doubt when Pierce, who grew up hating Boston like every other kid from L.A., made two free throws with 1:14 remaining to get the Celtics to 97-95. Fisher then missed a jumper and the Celtics appeared to be in business when Pierce fought off two Lakers for a rebound. But as he dribbled toward the basket, Bryant reached around and knocked the ball away to Odom, who then fed Bryant for his slam. Still, the Celtics wouldn't go away. After Bryant missed one of two free throws with 16 seconds left, Eddie House nailed a 3-pointer to make it 101-98 with 14 seconds left. House then nearly stole the ensuing inbounds pass, but Bryant, sprawled out on the floor, got the ball to Fisher, who drew a desperation foul. Fisher then made two free throws and stole Boston's last pass as Lakers fans, stunned to silence a few nights ago, left the building dreaming of seeing another improbable comeback. Made by NBA TV. Pistons-Celtics 103-97 Gm2 PO08[Hamilton 25p vs Pierce 26p] BOSTON, May 22, 2008 (AP) -- Home wins are no longer good enough for the Boston Celtics. The road to the NBA Finals in the Eastern Conference now goes through Detroit. Richard Hamilton bounced back from a poor series opener with 25 points, and the Pistons beat Boston 103-97 Thursday night, tying the conference finals at one game apiece and seizing the home-court advantage that has meant everything to the Celtics. "It is even," forward Rasheed Wallace said. "We don't sit back and say, 'Oh, look. They are undefeated at home,' or 'They didn't win a game on the road.' ... A lot of the teams they played in the postseason and the regular season were scared of them, as far as KG and Ray and Paul. They are good players, but we have good players, also." Kevin Garnett had 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Celtics, who lost at home for the first time since March 24 against Phoenix. No team has reached the Finals without a road victory, and there's no longer a chance for Boston to be the first. "I fully believe, and I've said many times, at some point we're going to have to win on the road," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "We've gotten away with it thus far. That's been taken away. And if we want what we want, we have to win on the road and that's just the way it is." Chauncey Billups had 19 points and seven assists, and his rookie backup, Rodney Stuckey hit some clutch jumpers in the fourth quarter and added 13 points for the Pistons, who host Game 3 on Saturday. "The atmosphere's going to be crazy," Hamilton said. "We're geeked about getting back to our home court. The fans are excited, and now it's our job to take care of home court." Paul Pierce scored 26 points for the Celtics, who had won 15 straight at home and gone 9-0 in the playoffs. But the only record that matters now is 0-6 -- their playoff road mark. "We have no choice now but to get it done on the road," Pierce said. Ray Allen broke out of a shooting slump with 25 points, his best performance in three months. But he was limited to 29 minutes by foul trouble, picking up his fifth foul with 3:09 left in the third quarter after his flurry had given Boston the lead. "I would rather be sitting here saying I can't make a shot but we won the game," Allen said. "I knew at some point my shot had to drop." Antonio McDyess scored 15 points, Tayshaun Prince had 14, and Wallace had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons, who were rusty in Game 1 but found their groove in the second quarter of this one, shooting 49 percent against the league's best defensive team. The Pistons led 86-75 after Stuckey's jumper with 8:05 remaining. Allen had seven points, including his first 3-pointer since Game 5 of the second round, during a 13-4 run that cut it to 90-88 with 4:39 to play. Later, Boston was down four and forced Detroit to call time with the shot clock about to run out, but then blew the defensive assignment and left Billups alone for a layup on the inbounds. Detroit led 100-94 with 18 seconds left. Another 3 by Allen cut it to three, but Wallace hit a free throw on the other end. The Pistons were 28-of-32 (87.5 percent) from the line. Billups was limited to nine points in Game 1, his first action since straining his right hamstring early in Game 3 against Orlando in the second round. He shed the tights he wore in the opener and came out aggressively, drawing a foul on the first possession and hitting two free throws. He added two free throws later in the first quarter when he appeared to create contact while attempting a 3-pointer by kicking the Celtics' Eddie House in the groin. "One thing I told Chaunce, you ain't got to be overaggressive out there," Hamilton said. "You can take your time and be the captain of our ship, and we'll try to do a good job of helping you out." The Celtics missed their first six shots in the second quarter and didn't make a field goal until James Posey's 3-pointer with 7:03 left that tied it at 27. McDyess scored the next five points and the Pistons led the remainder of the half, opening a 50-43 lead at the break. Allen was limited to 11 minutes in the first half because of foul trouble. He picked up his third with 8:41 to go and didn't play again until coming in when the Celtics had the ball in the final seconds of the half. Boston stormed out of the half with a 15-4 surge, featuring eight points from Allen in his best stretch in a while, to open a 58-54 lead. The Pistons steadied themselves with 3-pointers by Hamilton, Wallace and Billups to regain the lead, and Allen later had to return to the bench when he picked up his fourth and fifth fouls. "It's sometimes the basketball gods," Rivers said. "Things are going well and then he picks up his fourth and fifth. I took the gamble on it and actually lost." Detroit went 4-of-5 from behind the arc in the quarter, with Wallace's 3 with 7.1 seconds left sending the Pistons to the final period with a 78-69 lead. Rockets-Jazz 91-113 Game6 PO 08[T-Mac 40p vs Williams 25p] SALT LAKE CITY, May 2, 2008 (AP) - The Utah Jazz will be playing on the road Sunday, but not in Houston. The Jazz beat the Rockets 113-91 on Friday night to win the series 4-2 and avoid having to play a Game 7 on the road. The Jazz did that a year ago against the Rockets and didn't want to push their luck again in Texas. The third quarter all but guaranteed they wouldn't have to. Deron Williams scored 13 of his 25 points in the period, making three of four 3-pointers as the Jazz outscored the Rockets 27-11. It was Utah's second chance to clinch the series and went significantly better than the first. The Rockets avoided elimination with a 95-69 win on Tuesday and the Jazz came home embarrassed and determined. "Our guys got ready to play them here after they beat us pretty good down at their place,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. By ending the series Friday, the Jazz earned a trip to Los Angeles for Game 1 against the Lakers on Sunday. Williams had just seven points at halftime, then took over the game in the third quarter. He was 4-for-7 from the field and pumped up his teammates as Utah pulled away on a 20-5 run. Houston had already cut a 17-point lead to four and Williams wanted the Jazz to pull away - and stay there. "As a point guard, I feel you have to be an extension of the coach - be a leader out on the floor. I just tried to get guys hyped up for tonight,'' Williams said. After a listless game Tuesday, the Jazz were aggressive and intense on Friday, playing with a bit of a nasty streak and forcing the Rockets to play from behind nearly the entire game. Houston relied almost entirely on Tracy McGrady, who couldn't beat the Jazz by himself - even with his 40 points. McGrady fell to 0-7 in playoff series. "It is what it is,'' said McGrady, who faces more opening-round curse questions with every exit. "I thought we did some great things to put ourselves in a great situation to try to make this a series.'' Luis Scola was the only other Rockets player in double figures with 15 points. The Rockets lost point guard Rafer Alston with a sprained ankle late in the second quarter and the offense never recovered. "They had the kind of game we had at home. Give them the credit. We just kind of ran out of gas,'' Houston coach Rick Adelman said. "We just didn't have enough answers for them.'' The Rockets had the longest winning streak of the regular season with 22 in a row, but in the playoffs they couldn't win consecutive games. Mehmet Okur had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Carlos Boozer added 15 points and 10 boards. Andrei Kirilenko scored 11 points and Williams added nine assists. The Jazz found their long-range shooting and made 10 of 22 3-pointers. Utah was 2-for-23 from beyond the arc in the previous two games. "The biggest difference? It went in,'' Kirilenko said with a grin. Jazz fans again taunted McGrady with the chant "Over-rated!'' then replaced it with "Beat LA!'' as the fourth quarter wound down. McGrady finished 13-for-26 and tried to carry the Rockets, but few of his teammates climbed aboard. McGrady pushed the Rockets through the end of the second quarter, going on a 9-0 run and scoring 13 straight for Houston while cutting a 17-point lead to 58-54 at halftime. "He didn't have much help out there,'' Houston's Shane Battier said. "The rest of us couldn't get anything going and he was a one-man wrecking ball out there.'' But the Rockets could get nothing going in the third, scoring only 11 points while going 4-for-22 from the floor and looking a lot like the Jazz had when Houston staved off elimination Tuesday at home. McGrady had just one point in the quarter. He came out firing in the fourth, but even the two-time scoring champion couldn't save the Rockets, who lost to the Jazz in a Game 7 at Houston a year ago. The Jazz didn't want to put themselves in that situation again and snuffed the Rockets' hopes by opening the third quarter with a 20-5 run, which Williams capped with seven straight points. He made back-to-back 3-pointers to put Utah up 77-59 and prompted Houston to call a timeout before it could get any worse. On his way to the Jazz bench, Williams was pumping his fist and shaking his head while saying "No way'' - apparently to the idea of another visit to Houston. Notes: McGrady scored eight of Houston's first 10 points. ... Utah was 12-for-24 in the first quarter. ... Ronnie Brewer had 13 points and Matt Harpring and Kyle Korver scored 10 apiece for the Jazz.
