Blackened (Rock Band Expert Drums 5 Stars) read this first please: EDIT: new highest score, 293,000+, goin for 300,000 :D people are asking me the same questions over and over, so reading this should help answer a lot of the generic ones. Still, I appreciate the comments/views and stuff, don't get me wrong. Check out the rest of my videos if you want to. I do music videos for a part-time-professional job, so that's what most of my work on here is. So I got my 6th new drumset; it's pretty damned bad, so I invented yet another mod, and got this video of me playing Blackened on Expert. I can definitely improve on this: it's definitely gold-starrable. And yes, at :43, i'm mimicing the guitar player, because it was just something stupid to do. Guitar Hero 2 - Hangar 18 (Expert) 5 Stars So, last night I was playing through this song on a whim, not thinking I would do this well. Fortunately for me, I had the VCR running on "record" at the time. Since my endeavor to complete every song at a five-star difficulty, I always figured I'd get through Hangar 18 before Misirlou. Just not this soon. I must say that in this run, I had no idea as to what I was doing about 25% in total portion of the entire song. Raining Blood / Expert 5 Stars 244k on Drums Wow this song was tough. The "Mosh 1" section is my enemy, also just trying to play accurately through the other parts. Very tough. I knew it'd be hard to 5-star so I made sure to get my first (and possibly last) success on film. So many times I got 226k which is a 2.79x average multiplier!!!! I got over 3.0x this time so it was a good run. The one thing that got me over the hump was turning down the band in sound options. During the mosh I could never grok that fast off-beat mosh snare drum and it sounded like a down beat to me and I'd always screw up Mosh 1 and Verse 1. Even as it is you can see I struggle through Mosh 1. My *attempted* stick pattern for that is RRLLRLRL and it's tricky because each R in RR is hitting a different pad. Same for each L in LL. So RRLL is 4 different pads, so it's really hard to pull off on drums (no pun intended... I wish I could use the "pull off" feature of GH3 like you can with the guitar controller!) FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work? A: Everything is explained in detail here: http://egyokeo.com/midihero Q: How do you do 3-note chords? A: All "two adjacent note" power chords are mapped to the top 4 pads, so with two hands I can play any 3-note chord except GYO. Q: How do you do whammy and star power? A: I use a bass drum pedal on my right foot to activate star power, and a hi-hat pedal on my left foot to control whammy depth. Q: Why do the notes "hit" so late? A: I use a 145ms setting for the in-game HTDV Lag Calibration feature to counter the "controller lag" I have with my setup. I use it to make the sweet spot of the notes match the sound of the music, not when the notes cross the row of circles. That way, I play what I hear, but I have to read ahead for the notes to play. Q: Are you using the "easy expert" cheat? A: Nope. Listen to the "tap" sounds the drums make. They match in-time to the music and the visible rhythm of the notes on-screen. There's no need for a bigger "window" around each note in order to hit them. The lag setting is what makes it look like I'm hitting things late. Q: How much does this cost? A: The drumKat is a pro-quality MIDI drum pad set. These days, they run about $1k. I also use a PC to run my custom home-brew MIDI Hero software to interpret the drum events. Then the "XIM" and "XFPS" add another $100+. This is not made for the masses. This is a one-of-a-kind setup. Q: Do you play real drums? Are you in a band? A: Yes, I've been playing drums since 1986. Metallica - One / Expert 5 Stars 475k 95% on Drums One of my favorite songs in GH3. And a perfect one to play on the drums. Gotta love those triplets. I actually get a little too excited and play really loudly on the pads there. Especially after the solo sections when I'm fired up. It causes me to be a little less accurate, but oh well, it's fun. I've added an extra drum pad for this song. The last 14 notes of the song pwn and I couldn't bare to not play them fully. I am not fast enough to play the 3-note chords with two hands (one hand for one note, the other hand for a dual-note pad, then do that in triplets) so I've mapped the entire GYB chord tho this pad, just for the final notes of the Outro... It's a homemade drum trigger made out of wood (for the frame), padded carpet (for a little bounce), and a piezo electric buzzer (from Radio Shack), then a 1/4" jack out to the drumKat where it sees it as a trigger in. When you tap on piezo buzzers, they generate varying voltage and this is a cheap way to get a REALLY good trigger. Very dynamic and responsive. I made it years ago, putting it to use now. I could practice this some more and try to get the 500k achievement, but I want to move on to TTFAF next so maybe I can pick it up there. FAQ: ---- Q: How does it work?
