Wii Teach You AFM Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is an important tool for nanotechnology. We tried to use more interesting and interactive way to demonstrate how AFM works. We build a hand held optical lever model (called AFM education kit) that allows people use this model to scan a nanostructure model. A powerful device, WiiTM-mote controller (NintendoTM) is used in the AFM education kit. Wiimote combines infrared camera, MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) acceleration sensors and Bluetooth connection. The motion of the AFM education kit is captured by Wiimote. BLACKPOWDER GUN ENTHUSIASTS AT AFM SAFI RANGES AACTS, the Association of Arms Collectors and Target Shooters, was founded on the 4th April 2002 . The situation of gun collecting and target shooting in Malta was at the time undergoing major changes with the drafting of new regulations in the pipeline and new opportunities abroad. The founding members had therefore decided that there was the need to set up a new association that would, along with the established organisations, work for the interests of the target shooters and collectors in the Maltese Islands. Aims AACTS was established to promote all forms of target shooting and arms collecting including militaria, not only among its members but also among the general public, by providing a focal point on all aspects of these activities. AACTS also organises facilities for training purposes, competitions, seminars, educational programs and courses in all aspects of target shooting whether for leisure or competition as also arms collecting, exhibitions and furnish any logistic support that may be required. The Association's aims include the promotion of awareness on issues relating to arms ownership amongst its members and the general public. AACTS has also worked to raise the profile of its members, particularly as key contributors to the promotion of the sporting aspect of target shooting as well as the historic, cultural and educational aspect of arms collecting and to draw commensurate respect and public esteem towards these objectives. Its members are encouraged to promote, maintain and enhance responsible ethic standards. AACTS promotes the involvement of its members in national/international policy making and decision-making processes that may in any way affect its members. The Association has since its inception, worked to obtain suitable land and buildings and any equipment or facilities necessary in the pursuance of its Membership's interests. It has greatly improved the facilities made available to it at the AFM SAFI Shooting ranges, by setting up new equipment for innovative shooting disciplines. AACTS regularly collects and circulates information of interest to the membership, by issuing regular newsletters. Recently, it has been employing the latest technologies to improve the storage and dissemination of information by using its web site. The Members AACTS enrols as members all applicants, regardless of race, colour or creed, of good moral standing and conduct, who seek membership and who have an interest in any one or all of its activities. The members of AACTS currently specialise in Muzzle Loading Black Powder Revolver and Musket Shooting, collections of arms and militaria. Members of AACTS have participated in the MLAIC World Championship in 2004 and the MLAIC European Zone Championships in 2005. The members are now preparing to participate in the MLAIC World Championships in August 2006 in Bordeaux . Affiliation AACTS seeks affiliation with other constituted bodies both locally and overseas for the purpose of furthering its objectives. Locally, AACTS is a member of the Malta Shooting Federation (MSF). Through this affiliation, AACTS is officially recognised as a Target Shooting Club for the purposes of participation in competitions abroad, especially the Muzzle Loaders Association International Committee (MLAIC) AACTS is also an affiliated club with the Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain (MLAGB) and members participate regularly in postal competitions organised by MLAGB. AFM RESERVISTS HOLD ANNUAL TRAINING CAMP Reservists ambush 'invaders' in annual training camp Issued by: AFM Press Office With part-time Maltese militia soldiers having played a heroic part in the Great Siege of 1565 and the uprising against the French in 1798, plus having later distinguished themselves during the Second World War, the Armed Forces of Malta's reservists perpetuate a long and honourable tradition of voluntary, part-time military service. AFM reservists have just concluded their annual week-long camp, where their training culminates in military exercises and manoeuvres out in the field. The camp was held at Pembroke Ranges with the aim of improving their administrative prowess in the field. The reservists practised patrolling and convoy techniques, setting up local defence, camouflage and concealment, as well as conducting anti-aircraft gunnery drills. An infantry exercise, dubbed "Conquering Prowler" was held in the Miżieb area, limits of Mellieħa, and focused on the reservists' ambush techniques on an "invading" force that landed in the north. The AFM's Emergency Volunteer Reserve Force (EVRF) was set up in 1998 to perform a range of roles and to relieve or reinforce the AFM's regular force in an emergency. With an initial intake of 60 volunteers from all walks of life, including seven women, the reservists have, over time, integrated well with the regular soldiers. Their adaptability and flexibility to the wide range of roles has been their hallmark, both for military tasks and civil emergencies such as rainwater flood relief. Their most significant operational engagement was during the CHOGM in November 2005, when they augmented the regular force's troops involved with airport security. In recent years, they have also been utilised in manning the ceremonial parades' saluting guns during major festivities or commemorations. In their eagerness to serve, one major hurdle they still have to constantly tackle is their full-time work commitments. Even medical doctors are enlisted in the EVRFs, and with the training they receive as back-up support in civil emergencies for disaster relief, simple guarding of key points becomes an interesting challenge for them. The EVRF reservists' minimum annual requirement as part-time volunteers is to train at week-ends once monthly and for a period of the annual camp lasting eight days. AFM, Red Cross personnel trained as combat medics Qualified Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) personnel and Gozo-branch staff of the Malta Red Cross have been awarded Combat Medic certificates after completing the last phase of training overseas with the Italian Red Cross as part of a Leonardo Da Vinci exchange project. Over these last two years, the Italian Red Cross's Special Rescue Department has been engaged in establishing combat life-savers and combat medics for the AFM, in close collaboration with the Malta Red Cross. Combat medics are trained soldiers who provide first aid and frontline trauma care on the battlefield while adhering to International Red Cross and relevant Geneva Conventions during times of peace or war. The AFM can now fulfil such roles in EU scenarios when deploying military personnel on peace support operations, as well as in local search and rescue. Apart from the several local hours of varied training in pre-hospital care and ambulance service with the Department of Health, on-the-job training was also provided in Italy. The Maltese contingent was led by AFM surgeon Major Giacinto Bartolo and was made up of eight soldiers and two Gozo Red Cross branch staff. The intensive two-week stay in Italy was evenly spread between the Milan-based Centro Emergenze Lombardia in Legnano, the Carabinieri and Civil Protection base at Bardonecchia (Torino), the Caserma Pierantoni and the Castelnuovo di Porto base (Rome), the old harbour city of Trani, and also in Bari. Throughout their stay, the contingent was hosted by the Italian Military Red Cross. Dr Marco Filippi was the principal instructor. He was assisted by Italian Red Cross and army directing-staff. AFM Warrant-Officer II Martin Borg was also asked to deliver lectures on the treatment of choking adults, young children and babies to course participants. The presentation of certificates to the new combat medics was made by Italian ambassador Paolo Andrea Trabalza at the Officer's Mess in Luqa Barracks.
