Abilene BCB Band sings Abilene by George Hamilton IV. Proclaimed the International Ambassador of Country Music thanks to his world tours in the '70s, George Hamilton IV began his career in the late '50s as a teen-oriented pop star. After his first hit, "A Rose and a Baby Ruth," hit number six on the pop charts in 1956, he toured with Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. However, his later pop efforts stalled on the charts, and in 1959, Hamilton joined the Grand Ole Opry. Top ten country singles like "Before This Day Ends", "Three Steps to the Phone (Millions of Miles)" and "If You Don't Know I Ain't Gonna Tell You" paved the way for 1963's "Abilene," which topped the country charts for four weeks and hit 15 on the pop charts. The following year, Hamilton charted three singles and returned to the Top Ten with "Fort Worth, Dallas or Houston." Folk music inspired Hamilton's late-'60s hits, including the Gordon Lightfoot-penned "Steel Rail Blues" and Joni Mitchell's "Urge For Going." Except for 1970's number-three hit "She's a Little Bit Country", chart success eluded him during the '70s, so George Hamilton IV took country music around the world. Besides more than ten tours of Great Britain and several BBC-TV productions, Hamilton became the first country artist to perform behind the Iron Curtain; he also toured Africa, the Orient, New Zealand, Australia, and even the Middle East. For the rest of his career, Hamilton concentrated on gospel recordings. His son, George Hamilton V, toured with his father's backup band and charted a single in 1988. C-130 Dyess Air Force Base Abilene Texas Shortly after the cowardly and tragic events of 9-11, our military was called into action to help root out the Taliban and elements of Osama Bin Ladin's bottom-dwellers from Afghanistan. In March, 2003 I went on a freelance assignment to capture some short interviews and shoot footage of a Dyess homecoming event. I traveled to Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts to meet Dyess C-130s crews as they were returning home from their mission in Afghanistan. I learned to appreciate the C-130s at an early age. I saw my very first Herc when I was an 19 year-old soldier just assigned to an Airborne unit at Fort Bragg, in 1971. I thought then, as I do today, this airplane is truly, TRULY magnificent. THE BEST PART OF THIS VIDEO IS AT THE END... So while this LONG video is loading, go get a cup of coffee, walk the dog or wash the car and come back and watch THE LAST 90 SECONDS OF THE VIDEO, when the families (moms, dads, sons, daughters) are reunited. The end is the best part of the video! I decided to edit a special montage of my footage to give-away on DVDs to as many Dyess people who graciously helped me on this project. As a Vietnam vet, it was personally important to me that the Dyess folks ALWAYS remember their return home to Texas as a HAPPY, POSITIVE AND PROUD MOMENT in their military careers (not like the experience guys from Vietnam got.) I entitled my piece, "GOOD Triple A --- Afghanistan to America to Abilene." This video earned me a Telly Award and an Aurora Award in international film and video competition, as well as regional press coverage. Abilene - Damien Jurado (cover) The phrase "Road to Abilene" means a difficult and painstaking task that ultimately leads to the accomplishment of a goal or objective. The phrase refers to the arduous journey of early cattlemen on the frontier of the American West. The Abilene Trail was a cattle trail leading from Texas to Abilene, Kansas. Its exact route is disputed owing to its many offshoots, but it crossed the Red River a little east of Henrietta, Texas, and continued north across the Indian Territory to Caldwell, Kansas, and on past Wichita and Newton to Abilene. The first herds were probably driven over it in 1866, though it was not named until Abilene was established in 1867. Abilene is a city in Dickinson County, Kansas. It began as a stage coach stop in 1867, established by Timothy Hersey and Eliza Hersey and named from a passage in the Bible, meaning "city of the plains." The town grew quickly when Joseph G. McCoy decided to use the town for the location of his stockyards. With the railroad pushing west and the cattle traders soon used Abilene as the largest stockyards west of Kansas City. The Chisholm Trail ended in Abilene and brought in many travelers and made Abilene one of the wildest towns in the west. Town marshal Tom "Bear River" Smith was initially successful policing Abilene, often using only his bare hands. He survived two assassination attempts during his tenure. However, he was murdered and decapitated on November 2, 1870. Smith wounded one of his two attackers during the shootout preceding his death, and both suspects received life in prison for the offense. He was replaced by Wild Bill Hickok in April of 1871. Hickock's time as marshal was short lived. While standing off a crowd during a street brawl, gambler Phil Coe took two shots at Hickock, who returned fire killing Coe, but then accidentally shot his friend and deputy, Mike Williams, who was coming to his aid.
