What Is Acupuncture? Amy Guinther earned her Master's of Science in Oriental Medicine from Meiji College of Oriental Medicine in San Francisco. She is a licensed acupuncturist in California and currently practices in San Rafael. She is also a Diplomate of Acupuncture with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine. In this segment Amy talks with us about what acupuncture is and how the therapy can help heal the body. Acupuncture is a medical therapy developed more than 2000 years ago in Asia. The therapy stimulates specific points beneath the skin by the insertion of acupuncture needles. This process restores the balance of the body's energy, also knows as "Qi"(pronounced chi). Acupuncture needles are extremely thin made from silver alloy, typically stainless steel. You may feel little or no discomfort as the needles are inserted as the process is typically painless. You may feel different sensations including slight soreness, numbness, warmth, or pressure. These energetic sensations differ from pain. People often comment that the feeling is unfamiliar but pleasant and comforting. After the first treatment has been administered, depending on the ailment being treated, many experiences may occur. Immediate, total or partial relief from pain or other symptoms may be experienced. Some patients experience a sudden burst of energy while others may feel relaxed. Many people experience a calming satisfaction. In most situations treatments take between 20 and 30 minutes but can last longer in certain scenarios. The length of the treatment depends on individual conditions of the patient and the skill of the acupuncturist. Many conditions may be treated and they include, diabetes, general pain relief, control for arthritis, tendonitis and other conditions such as circulatory problems with high or low blood pressure, cold hands and feet. Some nervous system imbalances can also be treated such as anxiety, nervousness, sleeplessness, depression, asthma, allergies, sinus problems, digestive disorders like Crohn's Disease, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, diarrhea, and constipation. Other common ailments treated include headaches, migraines, treatments to help stop smoking and many more conditions. Acupuncture will not conflict with any of your medications. Acupuncture is used to complement and supplement your physician's treatments not to replace them. You should discuss this issue with your physician and acupuncturist. The acupuncture program for smoking cessation at the Suddenly Slimmer Wellness Center (which offers Acupuncture & Natural medicine) consists of five visits. Taking into account each person's unique smoking habits and physical and emotional make-up, every patient's acupuncture treatment is tailor-made and designed for him or her. No two people are treated exactly the same. At this session, you learn to identify your particular triggers for smoking and how to avoid them. Acupuncture can reduce the cravings and lessen the withdrawal symptoms associated you're your efforts to quit smoking. Since the first month of quitting is probably the most difficult, the acupuncture program can ease you through this time. The first appointment is geared toward preparing you to become a nonsmoker; it does not include an acupuncture treatment. The next four sessions are acupuncture treatments to help you stop smoking. Up to the night before the first acupuncture treatment, you may smoke your last cigarette ever. From that point on, you will be a nonsmoker. The four acupuncture treatments for your quit smoking program are spaced out over three to four weeks, usually two treatments the first week, and then based on your individual needs. Exercise is encouraged and dietary recommendations are given (foods to avoid and foods to be included during the withdrawal phase). If the individual sticks with it, the acupuncture quitting program can lead to permanent cessation. Top How Much Does the Program Cost? The total cost of the program is $495.00, which includes the initial consultation and four acupuncture treatments. This package price is payable at your first visit. The herbs, which are prescribed on an individual basis, range in cost from $6.50 to $18.00 each. Our acupuncture program to help you quit smoking will only be effective if you meet us halfway. Acupuncture will not "do it" for you. You need to have a genuine desire to quit smoking. It's very important to enlist the support of friends and family. Everyone will respond to acupuncture and quitting smoking differently. Some may sail through the process with little or no problems, while others may have a harder time with withdrawal. Be assured that acupuncture can reduce the stress and difficulty of quitting smoking, and can aid you in your decision to quit smoking.
