Sam Harris: Proposition 8 and The Aftermath of Injustice. FOLLOW-UP ► http://youtube.com/watch?v=AlBiYQvHUFY PROPOSITION 008: ELIMINATES RIGHT OF SAME-SEX COUPLES TO MARRY. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. How much money is being raised and spent to pass or defeat California propositions and ballot measures, and what are the sources of the money? Check here to follow the money trail: ► http://tinyurl.com/DebraBowen ► http://electiontrack.com/prop8.php Thoughts during election night... They keep telling us that since it's a matter of human rights and there are still 2-3 million votes not counted - we should wait. Meanwhile, the YES people are dancing in the streets - rejoicing their PREJUDICE!!! Yet even if we manage to squeak out a last minute victory (which seems at this point a tenuous hope at best) I know that in "liberal" Los Angeles county where I live, the vote was split 50% - 50%. As I write this it seems that there were only 20,806 more votes for Prop 8 than against. So as I walk around today, one out of every two people I see DO NOT want me to have equal rights. They see me as inferior, because I'm gay. And that is so hurtful, and it makes me unbelievably mad. It makes me want to scream at them. Makes me want to try to hurt every one of the over 5,160,000 California voters for Prop 8 in a way that makes them understand how they've made me feel. How much they failed in their attempt to belittle, to marginalize, to shame me and my love. But my challenge - my true challenge of character - is that the OTHER one of those two people DO want me to have equal rights. They DO value me as a human being, and they DO believe that our country really does stand for "Liberty and Justice For ALL" and that "All" includes Gay Americans like me. I want to hug them. All 4,760,000 plus of them. And as I walk around, I have no idea who is who. So I have a choice. Succumb to the tidal wave of bitterness that threatens to overwhelm me? See the glass as half empty, see everyone as a potential Nazi Gay-hating jerk? Or see the good? Believe the glass is half-full? Take heart at the progress Gay Americans have made in such a relatively short time, compared to the slow progress of public opinion in "approving" interracial marriage? It is confusing and emotional. And it has totally ruined my Obama day. The black community voted 75% FOR 8. shocking. it wasnt' so long ago they didn't have rights. I don't understand. Why would anyone not want Cooper to be equal? The Aftermath of the largest nuclear detonation in history. The footage you are watching is taken from the documentary "Trinity and Beyond", also known as "The Atomic Bomb Movie" directed by Peter Kuran, released in 1995, and I strongly recommend it to everyone reading this, it is a must watch! History of this excerpt: At the beginning of this excerpt, the explosion that you see is the 'Tsar Bomba' or 'Emperor Bomb' in English and it was detonated by the soviets on October 31st, 1961, on an island in the arctic sea to the north of Russia. The weapon packed a yield of 57 Megatons on detonation, meaning that it was equal to the explosive force of 57,000,000 Tons of TNT, or 3800 times larger than the Hiroshima explosion. This monster bomb is famous for being the largest nuclear detonation on the face of this planet. 112 days earler the project to build the weapon, codenamed Ivan, was initiated by the soviet premier of the time Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev. 3 years before the Tsar Bomba was detonated, Khrushchev was enstated as the Premier of the Soviet Union in March 1958, and shortly after his enstatment the Soviet Union issued a statement in which it planned to suspend nuclear weapons testing. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the United States President until at the time, and he issued this statement shortly after the Soviet Union's announcement: "The United States is prepared, unless testing is resumed by the Soviet Union, to withhold further testing on its part of atomic and hydrogen weapons for a period of one year from the beginning of the negotiations." There was a nuclear weapons moratorium in effect from late 1958, the last nuclear weapon detonated by the United States being 'Titania', a small sub-kiloton device detonated on October the 30th 1958 in Nevada, the last device detonated in the Hardtack II series of tests. Almost exactly 3 years later, the Soviet Union detonated the Tsar Bomba, effectively destroying the moratorium. The United States were furious. The Ambassador to the United Nations at the time was Adlai Stevenson, as pictured in the film giving this statement: "Mr. Khrushchev has exploded his 'Giant Bomb' in cynical disregard of the United Nations. By this act, the Soviet Union have added injury to insult: They broke the moratorium on nuclear weapons testing. They have raised atmospheric pollution to new heights. They have started a new race for more deadly weapons. They have spurned the humanitarian appeal of the United Nations, and of all peace loving peoples. They have advanced no solid justification for exploding this monstrous and unnecessary weapon. They have been wholly unmoved by the dangers of radioactive fallout to the human race. The United States delegation deeply deplores this contempt for world opinion and we think that in the light of this sombre development, other delegations may wish to express their views on this shocking and distressing news. For today, Mr. Chairman, the world has taken a great leap backwards, toward anarchy and disaster." The Narrator, William Shatner, then says: The Russians had Shattered the voluntary moratorium. The United States would follow suit with an extensive series of weapon tests, for massive retaliation. The United States testing that was to follow the ending of the moratorium was codenamed Operation Nougat, a series of 69 nuclear weapon tests which began a month before the Tsar Bomba explosion. This was at the height of the aptly named 'Cold War' and the Cuban Missile Crisis, and it stood not only as testing, but as a deterrent against Soviet aggression. Any nuclear attack by either country would have escalated and triggered a full-scale thermonuclear war in which many millions would have perished, and making much of the world inhospitable. These weapons designed and constructed by the United States and Russia were designed to protect the countries but instead, if the Cold War became a reality, they would have had the destructive power to destroy much of the human race. Remember to watch the documentary!! MYANMAR AFTERMATH EXSPOSED_by CNN'S DAN RIVERS http://blog.luciolepress.com/2008/05/09/narrow-escapes-for-cnn-reporter-in-myanmar-evading-authorities-while-filing-reports-on-the-cyclone-aftermath.aspx Narrow escapes for CNN reporter Dan Rivers in Myanmar, evading authorities while filing reports on the cyclone aftermath Posted by kluciole at 5/10/2008 12:12 AM and is filed under news,Politics,Human Rights,Health,Science,International,Environment,Cultures Narrow escapes for CNN reporter in Myanmar By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer Sat May 10, 12:20 AM ET A CNN reporter who left Myanmar Friday was chased by authorities as he reported on the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis but escaped primarily because of the incompetence of the people after him. Dan Rivers hid under a blanket at one police checkpoint and casually covered up his name on a passport to avoid detection another time. He may ultimately have gotten out of the country due to a stewardess' impatience. "I was amazed at the lengths they apparently went just to catch me," Rivers told The Associated Press by telephone from Thailand on Saturday. Rivers' story illustrates the preoccupation of Myanmar's military government with things other than helping the country recover from a storm that killed thousands and left many survivors homeless. Aid groups have reported difficulties in getting badly needed supplies and relief workers into the secretive country. Rivers sneaked into the country on Monday — he wouldn't say how — and for a day reported the story without saying his name or showing his face onscreen. CNN, owned by Time Warner Inc., and Rivers then quickly agreed to drop the mask. "We decided it would have much more impact if I could communicate more directly, if I could look down the barrel of a camera and tell people precisely how bad it was," he said. "I think that type of personal reporting is much more effective than a voiceover on a picture." But it made him a marked man. A local contact told Rivers' crew the government was looking for him by contacting all hotels where foreigners stayed. During reporting on Thursday, an immigration official stopped Rivers' group. He took the passports of two crew members and compared them to a picture of Rivers taken from a CNN screen. During the two hours before they were waved on, Rivers said he went to a restaurant and walked the streets, "trying not to look like a white guy with long hair, which was difficult." The authorities didn't discover the men were from CNN. Knowing his picture was being circulated, Rivers hid under a blanket in the van the next time police checked. He later resumed reporting away from their van until an official told them to return to their van, where police would be waiting. It was a tough walk. "There were a lot of things going through our minds then about what we would find at the end of that journey," he said. "At one point I was thinking, `what if they just shot us and threw us into the river and said it was an accident?'" There were only two policemen waiting. They asked to see Rivers' passport and he casually covered up his first and last names with his thumbs. They radioed Rivers' two middle names back to their bosses. They were passed on to another government official, who let them go after being convinced they were part of a relief group. Strategic offerings of cigarettes, water and a candy bar helped. The crew rushed back to the capital city of Yangon. "I kind of felt that I'd used my nine lives up and it was time to get out of the country," Rivers said. He was afraid for the safety of his Burmese contacts if he were found out and, frankly, didn't want officials spending time searching for him when they had more important things to do. While on a plane to get out of the country, Rivers was called back to the gate to be searched. He'd been found out. He was thoroughly searched, but fortunately had no pictures with him. "I thought I was going to get hauled off to some fetid prison for a week," he said. Eventually, an impatient stewardess demanded authorities make a decision on what to do with Rivers and, thus challenged, put him back on the plane. Rivers said he hoped to get back in to Myanmar at some point but given the sensitivities it's not likely to be anytime soon.
