Akeena Solar http://www.solardave.com/index.php/akeena-solars-service-locations-and-services-video/ This is my 4th video interview with Eric Bowman Regional Sales Manager of Akeena Solar out of Denver Colorado. SolarDave: What services does Akeena Solar offer and where do you offer them? Eric Bowman: Akeena Solar is what you call a solar integrator by definition a solar integrator is someone that designs for commerical and residential and then they install those systems. In addition to that Akeena Solar is one of the only companies that has their own panel system, we design our own panel, we design our own systems and we furnish and install with our own crew. We have over 100 employees nationwide from California to Hawaii, Colorado, in the northeast with New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania so we definately have a wide reach. We have been in business in Colorado just in 2008 we opened up shop and it has been growing rather quickly and we service the entire front range and even going up in to the mountains towards Summit Couunty. SolarDave: Western slope? Eric Bowman: We don't go to the western slope yet, but as we expland over the next year propject we will be in the western slope and Grand Junction within the next year. What Inverters Is Akeena Solar Using http://www.solardave.com/index.php/what-inverters-is-akeena-solar-using-video/ This is my 5th video interview with Erik Bowman Regional Sales Manager of Akeena Solar out of Denver Colorado. SolarDave: What solar inverters does Akeena Solar use? Erik Bowman: As far as panels go we only install the Andalay panels our own system, our own propiritory panel. Depending on the project we are going to offer SMA or we are going to offer Fronius and that is for residential projects, and when we get in to commercial rated inverters like SatCon large utility scale or large commercial project. Right now SunTech are sole provide and manufacturer of the Andalay product, Kyocera is potential going to become our manufacturers in 3rd qtr 4th qtr of this year. What Affects Solar Panel Costs http://www.solardave.com/index.php/does-akeena-solar-get-their-solar-panels-at-a-discount-video/ SolarDave: Does Akeena Solar Get Their Solar Panels at a Discount price for buying them in volume? Eric Bowman: There are a lot of things that solar panel costs, volume, quality, there are a lot of components to it, we are the only solar intergrator that has developed our own propiritory panel so we outsource the manufacturing of that to SunTech which at the end of this year will be the largest manufacturer in the world. They only make the Andalay solar panel for Akeena and Akeena only. It is our patent and our panel noboby can source the panel or install in the panel in the United States. Because we are a very large solar intergator, one of the largest and we are publicly held and we are on the NASDAQ:AKNS because we only sell that one type of panel for that residentail application our volume is not like a Sharp or a BP that might sell to multiple brokers across the United States. But we are extremely competitive when it comes to cost and value proposition, realiablity, aestecis and cost. Our clients get a win all the time. Here is a small mock up of the Andalay panel the biggest difference you are going to see between the Andalay panel and any other panel in the past 30 years including everything that is being installed today, a traditional panel has aluminum racking and a non structural panel that sits on top of that, the wires are connected together and there is a perimeter ground system around that has to go around. So what we have done for our clients over 2,000 installations in the last 5 years for residential systems they wanted something that looked a little bit better and had a higher reliability over time and what we have done it integrate the actual aluminum racking right in to the module, so the module is structural therfore you do not need any extra aluminum racking. What we have done is take this turn buckle in the top and other one in the bottom. Then you take the other module and you snap it together you tighten up the turn buckle that draws the panels together so that provides only a 1/8″ gap. Now you have a structural connection at the top and at the bottom and you have redundant grounding which gives us less ground faults, and it looks a lot better and it sits flush with the roof. And it has been a big winner I would say everyone that has purchased this system in Colorado has done it either for the aesthetics or the reliability and it is one of the few non comonitized panels on the market. Why Is New Jersey A Leader In Solar? http://www.solardave.com/index.php/why-is-new-jersey-a-leading-solar-economy-video/ This is my 6th video interview with Erik Bowman Regional Sales Manager of Akeena Solar out of Denver Colorado. SolarDave: Why Is New Jersey A Leader In Solar Power Installs? Erik Bowman: There are 3 components that affect any economy whether solar is viable in that economy or not, you have the cost of putting in the system cost of electricity, and the sun availability. Those are the 3 biggies, there are a couple of other subtle factors that impact that but those are the 3 big one. Turns out that New York is actually the #2 solar economy in the United States and Germany is the #1 economy in the world, and you notice the common denominator is that it is cloudy - that least most people would perceive those environments as cloudy. But there is enough sun to run solar but the reason it is viable have a combination of extremely high electricity rates and extremely strong rebates put in to drive the cost of the systems down. When you put those 2 things together it makes sense for the client. That is why New York has extremely high electricity rates as does California the rebates are realitivelty strong so when you put those 2 together they make a lot of economic sense. In Colorado the rebates are the strongest in the country at $4.50 a watt plus the federal tax credit when you would combine that with what I would call medium to low cost electricity but increasing fast, this year electricity went up 27% in the Xcel territory in Colorado which is a very sharp curve. Any New Solar Technologies Coming Out That Excite You? http://www.solardave.com/index.php/any-new-solar-technologies-coming-out-that-excite-you-video/ This is my 7th video interview with Erik Bowman Regional Sales Manager of Akeena Solar out of Denver Colorado. SolarDave: Any New Solar Technologies Coming Out That Excite You? Erik Bowman: There are a lot of different technologies when you think of the cost of installing the system you have the labor component, you have a design component and you have actually the silicon electricity producing component - each one of those has a real dollar value attached to them. Typically anytime that question is answered you are talking about silicon and how much electricity can we produce but the labor and the actual module themselves manufacturing them also add real costs that need to be looked at. So Akeena's research and development department looks at the installation and the structural component that is work on and we are the only company that I am aware of that that has come out with a product that answers a lot of questions to try and lower that cost - only takes one day to install and a normal panel install could take 3 days to install or 2 days. When it comes to silicon I am not an expert in the industry but everyone talks about thin film that is certainly on the horizon. Thin film has issues with manufacturing capacity - currently it is actually inefficient at 10%. Standard panels run and where from 14 to 20% efficiency. Once the efficiency of thin film reaches the level of standard panels you have only reach parity and the benefit of it unless the cost to produce it is extremely low and we don't predict that to happen in a long time a decade at least. Right now there are commercial applications - utility applications large scale extremely large projects where thin film can work but residentialy you would need a manufacturing process logistical transportation and supply chain process then you would have to have installation infrastructure that understands how to utilize that. Bottom line as new technologies get developed new ways of producing energy from the sun whether from more efficient silicon or thin film we would just integrate that into our module when it become viable and the reduction of that cost would be passed on to the client. Flat Solar Panel System Interview http://www.solardave.com/index.php/akeenas-flat-roof-solar-system-video/ Akeena's Flat Roof Solar System [Video] By Dave | Edit Eric Bowman describes Akeena's flat panel system that does not need roof penetrations on a flat roof. This is my 2nd video interview with Eric Bowman Regional Sales Manager of Akeena Solar out of Denver Colorado. SolarDave: How does your flat roof system work? Eric Bowman: The flat roof system for Andalay are developed for roofs that are typically on commercial entities so that have a membrane to them so it is kind of delicate so most folks that own a company or down in downtown Denver you will see some garages that have flat roofs and a membrane roof. What we have done is come come up with a system that is ballasted meaning it has weights that go on the bottom of a framework so it is designed specifically for the Andalay system. The panels are integrated in to this framework and it sits on top of the roof and it weights can handle wind loads of over 150mph and does not need penetrations that need to go through the roof, it literally sits there. It can either go on the gravel or the membrane without any negative effect on the roof. SolarDave: Is the thin film or is it a standard panel? Eric Bowman:No this is a standard panel - Andalay panel. What we have done when you think about the weight of a solar panel and the Andalay module runs 45 pounds so you are going to divide that by the surface area of the panel so that 15 sq ft so you are only at about 3ibs per sq ft. which is a negligible amount of most residential and commercial structures. So now we have ingrated that in to a frame work - with a picture that speaks a 1,000 words you can how that looks but embedded within that are our weights that fit in the bottom of this framework so it looks like a trianglar setup - flat bottom - 10 degree angle that is built in to that 10 degree angle and the weights help keep it from coming off the roof and meets all the juristical requirements without holes in the roof. How Much Paperwork Goes in To A Solar Panel Install? http://www.solardave.com/index.php/how-much-paperwork-is-involved-in-a-solar-installation-video/ SolarDave: How much paperwork happens before the installation begins on a solar installation? Eric Bowman: When you think about a project from beginning to end, beyond just getting the quote and the information to the client, once the agree to the project the process has a project management component, it has a Xcel rebate component, or who ever the utility maybe and they is definitely paperwork involved for submitting for the rebates. Managing the process, ordering the product, logistically getting it sent out to the location. We also have a set of drawings that need to be completed both structural as well as the electrical and those drawings have to get submitted to the utility and in to the jurisdiction for permittings, so there is actually a lot of activities that take place we have a team of engineers and project managers and local operations people taking care of each one of these. The final installation only take about one day. Tags: eric bowman akeena solar panel power alternative energy paperwork |

Will The Price Of Solar Panels Come Down Anytime Soon? http://www.solardave.com/index.php/will-the-price-of-solar-panels-come-down-anytime-soon-video/ This is my 8th video interview with Erik Bowman Regional Sales Manager of Akeena Solar out of Denver Colorado. SolarDave: Will The Price of Solar Panels Come Down Anytime Soon? Erik Bowman: That is an interesting question and I don't want to create and false expectations of clients, because yes over time as manufacturing ramps up there are companies all over the world making panels. As manufacturing ramps up, as demand increases the prices for panels should drop and it has dropped over time and we predict it will drop in the future. At this time though the subsides in Colorado cover 50% to 60% of the cost of the system and even at that at cutting the cost at half is now that is even viable verses standard electricity. Even as the cost of the panel drops and what happens historically looking at German New York and California as the models the most mature solar economies in the world rebates drop over time as the cost to install goes down the rebates are there to make it make sense as the technology catches up. So it will probably be 10 years, that is a total guess you would have to ask people that know more than me before the cost of a solar power system on its own without any subsides make equivalent and viable economic sense. Nobody can predict the future don't know what is going to happen. Right now with the rebates in place and you are installing a system that will produce electricity for 30 years at 7.5 cents a kilo watt hour it costs you 11.5 through Xcel right now. So it is a matter of making a decision to say, I am willing to make a capital outlay up front in order to prepay my electricity at a cheaper kilowatt hour now, verses making increasing rates over time. And a lot of people are making that call. Tags: alternative energy solar panels power erik bowman solardave |

Worry Of A Bad Solar Installer That Burns a House Down http://www.solardave.com/index.php/worry-of-a-bad-solar-installer-that-burns-a-house-down-video/ This is my 9th video interview with Erik Bowman Regional Sales Manager of Akeena Solar out of Denver Colorado. SolarDave: Do you ever worry about a solar contractor that miss wires and burns a house down which ends up on the 5 o'clock news and gives the solar industry a bad name? Erik Bowman: I think whether you are commercial or residential when ever you are picking a company definitely need to look at background and look at the history this goes for any construction project and in Colorado and in PV there is no barrier to entry all you need is a business license and you can buy panels of the internet you can become a PV company. In California the are very stringent regulatory rules in place and that is where our company is headquarter is out of California, we have 4 different licenses in all infrastructure and project management, process, engineer capacity and drawings and licensed folks in California and we bring all the process and knowledge back to Colorado and although it is not required to have that here we have that and we use that to implement our projects. So there are a lot of small companies that pop up when ever there is a low barrier to entry, construction is one of the most easiest ones to jump into when the product is readily available on the internet and you have to think about what are the most important things when installing anything on your home. Quality and what it takes to install so you don't get roof leaks so you don't get ground faults so the systems works typically you are not going to have a situation where you are going to have a fire or anything acute like that. What really is going to happen is roof leaks and a lack of power production over time because of lose connections. Those are the areas that we focused on with our Analay panel was to mitagate the chance of lower production due to poor wiring and also to increase the aestic value and reduce the chance for roof leaks by reducing the number of holes in the roof by about 30%.
