Very important to watch these clips also to get the full context. Since discovering this story on August 31st, it has been picked up by the mainstream media to some extent. Alaskan Eagles - USA MAy 2006 There are more bald eagles in Alaska than there are in all other states combined. Residents blame the local bird woman for attracting them and have vowed to stop her. "Ecologically, she's totally unaware", complains biologist Edgar Bailey. He claims that by feeding the eagles in an urban area, Jean Keene is threatening the ecosystem of the entire region. Already, the eagles have started attacking pets and there's concern they pose a risk to babies. Some residents have taken matters into their own hands and started shooting the birds. Lyle Mays - Alaskan Suite: Ascent Lyle Mays ha aspettato molto tempo prima d'incidere il suo primo album da solista, ma quando lo ha fatto ne è uscito un capolavoro assoluto, un disco meraviglioso, nonostante parte della critica lo abbia snobbato. Lyle ha dimostrato d'essere, anche da solista, un compositore e musicista completo, dotato di genio artistico, prerogativa di pochi eletti. Cercando di analizzare i brani che compongono quest'album, denominato con il suo stesso nome, "Lyle Mays", onestamente non saprei dire quale sia il migliore: so solo che questo CD è stato per anni sul lettore che ho a casa ed attualmente gira "vorticosamente" anche su quello installato in auto. Tutti i brani sono sbalorditivi, partendo da "Highland Aire" dove ho trovato il più bel solo di piano di Lyle così come sul terzo brano, "Slink". Il quarto, "Mirror Of The Heart", tutto suonato al piano, mi lascia sempre estasiato per la sua struggente bellezza, così come il brano di chiusura, "Close To Home", un vero pezzo di bravura. Ma è in "Alaskan Suite", suddivisa in tre parti e precisamente "Northern Lights", "Invocation" ed "Ascent", che Mays supera se stesso, soprattutto nell'ultimo movimento, "Ascent". Lyle inizia questa ascesa verso il cielo, prima col piano solo, poi con la chitarra ed ancora con la batteria che si fa sempre più incisiva e presente così come i tappeti di tastiere si trasformano in coro ( Ahhhh, come usa la voce Vasconcelos in questo "Ascent", direbbe Maurizio Mosca...) fino alla vetta finale per poi rientrare nel finale solo piano e chitarra che raddoppia. Eccezionale, unico, inimitabile, grandioso, splendido: Mays deve essere annoverato nell'Olimpo dei pianisti, alla pari di Jarret ed Evans. Coast Guard - Alaskan Monarch Rescue in the Bearing Sea On March 14, 1990, the F/V Alaskan Monarch was enroute to the St. Paul harbor to deliver 100,000 pounds of crab to Pribilof Island Processors (PIP). The Alaskan Monarch continued toward the harbor; it encountered an ice floe about one and one-half miles from the harbor entrance. The Alaska Mist, a 300-foot processing vessel, was exiting the harbor, and in doing so cleared a path to the harbor entrance. In an attempt to reach the harbor, the Captain piloted the Alaskan Monarch into the wake of the Alaska Mist. The Alaskan Monarch, however, traveled only another quarter of a mile before becoming caught in the ice. After the ice trapped the vessel, the ship radioed a call for help to other vessels and learned that a number were also stuck or unable to come to their assistance. Throughout the rest of that day and the next, the crew tried to free the vessel from the ice and fix the damage already done by the jagged ice. The ship radioed a Mayday signal when weather conditions worsened on March 15. The Alaskan Monarch was then getting very close to shore. A U.S. Coast Guard cutter attempting to help was unable to secure a towline to the vessel. A Coast Guard helicopter lifted four crew members off the vessel, leaving only two crew members aboard for a final attempt to save the ship. Soon after, the vessel went aground on a jetty near the harbor entrance and was holed in its bow. The Coast Guard eventually pulled both men from the water.
