Alkan - Le Vent Some more thoughts... 'Le Vent' is the second of the Trois Morceaux published as Op. 15. For me, this is a sort of post-apocalyptic expression of desolation. Alkan uses chromatic scales to evoke endless gusts of wind, that convey a kind of frigidity, and bleakness that one may associate with images of the arctic, or the desert. The chromatic scales accompany chords, whose rhythm, chord spacing, and voicing leading, bear some resemblance to that of the second movement of Beethoven's seventh symphony. At (2:40), there is a new theme in D major, which after the opening section of the piece, is like an arrival at a place of refuge, or sanctuary. Its warmth is intensified by its placement after the opening section. Every once in a while, those cold winds penetrate through, into the 'safety' of this episode (i.e. at 3:06, and at 3:33, and at 3:41, etc.). Little by little, however, the wind overtakes all, and soon we have nothing but the empty, cold, desolate, wind. Incidentally, this poetic idea appears in the 1852 version of Liszt's 'Chasse-Neige' (approximately measures 37-50). Interestingly, this poetic idea which, in my personal opinion, is one of the key factors that make 'Chasse-Neige' one of the most unique and effectively moving romantic piano poems, was totally absent from the 1837 version of the piece! It only appeared after Liszt became aware of 'Le Vent'. And Liszt was indeed very well acquainted with the Trois Morceaux, for not only were they dedicated to him, but he also wrote a review of them, and played through them, and he may have contributed to the 'hit' status that 'Le Vent' briefly achieved in the 19th century. Yes, Alkan was a sort of 'one-hit wonder' for a time in the 19th century. At (5:27), Alkan has both hands playing in unison octaves to convey the wind. And at (5:54), there are chromatic wind gusts that grow increasingly stronger, (a bit which is almost quoted in 'Chasse-Neige'). At (6:04), the main thematic idea re-emerges, (again, much as Liszt has his thematic idea re-emerge, except that Alkan has it re-emerge at a pianissimo dynamic level, whereas Liszt has it come back at a fortissimo dynamic level) though this time the chords are treated in a sort of 'shivering' manner, using tremolos instead of solid chords. This treatment of the opening theme yields an even colder expression than in the opening. (6:45) to the end is the coda. The piece is structurally simpler than the first or third members of the suite. It loosely follows a Ternary (ABA) form with a coda.
