Making a Clear Glass Positive aka "Soft Negative" for DOP This shows me walking through the process of making a positive image on clear glass - traditionally, this would be called an Ambrotype - here, however, I overexposed it a little bit to get a "soft negative" or a negative that can be used with modern silver paper (printing). The mind twister is that it's still a positive when placed against a black background but too thin to be called a collodion negative (to be printed on POP-Albumen/Salt). Are you confused yet? *grin* Tags: wet plate collodion making "soft negative" an Ambrotype on clear glass. photography 19th Century |

Varnishing Your Wet Plate Collodion Images I walk through the process of varnishing a black glass Ambrotype. Not a high "wow-factor" here, but some practical knowledge needed in the process. It's very important that you varnish your wet plate images - they damage and tarnish easily - believe me! Tags: wet plate collodion varnishing photography 19th Century |

Civil War Minutes Part 17 - Children of the Battlefield Part 17 of the Civil War Minutes documentary series about soldiers in the Civil War. CHILDREN OF THE BATTLEFIELD. Unknown soldier killed at Gettysburg is discovered holding an ambrotype photograph of children. Who are they and who is he? Personal belongings open a window into the lives of those who battle in America's Civil War. The stories behind never-before-seen photographs, letters, artifacts and hundreds of rare paintings and engravings complete the picture of the Civil War in CIVIL WAR MINUTES® - Union. Small and unique objects, such as a drum from the Battle of Gettysburg with a hidden note inside, are pieced together to reveal the human element of war. This film also discloses the perspective of the average foot soldier through handwritten letters to family members. The real lives of ordinary people who leave their homes and families behind to answer duty's call for this new and inexperienced nation are featured. This documentary explores soldiers' everyday lives through the personal effects they carry into war. The Civil War Minutes series is available on DVD from Inecom Entertainment Company. Available at stores like Amazon, Borders and Barnes and Noble. Tags: civil war american union rebellion battlefield child children girl boy gettysburg round top soldier battle PA of |

Barnwell's Lincoln Portrait On May 9, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was in Decatur to attend the Illinois State Republican Convention. Local photographer Edward A. Barnwell wanted to take a picture of "the biggest man" at the convention and invited Lincoln to his People's Ambrotype Gallery at 24 North Water Street to pose for this portrait. The next day, after Richard Oglesby introduced the "Rail Splitter," convention delegates unanimously endorsed Lincoln for President. On May 18 the National Republican Convention meeting in Chicago nominated him as the party's candidate. Tags: Lincoln Barnwell photographic Portrait Millikin University |
