Those who have seen the 1998 film 'Elizabeth' starring Cate Blanchett may be confused as to which Duke of Anjou Elizabeth met and at what time this occurred. In the film, Elizabeth meets a Duke of Anjou early on in her reign and he is portrayed as flamboyant and there is a deep suggestion that he is homosexual. This is a reference to Henri, who was known for his extravagance and there were some rumours during his lifetime that he may have had sexual relationships with men. But they never met. Elizabeth only met a Duke of Anjou when she was in her fourties. In addition François was not said to have been flamboyant or gay. A more accurate portrayal of Elizabeth I's relationship with the correct Anjou in a drama, can be found in the BBC series, 'Elizabeth R' and in the 2005 series 'Elizabeth I'. Anjou did not achieve military success in the Netherlands and suffered a particularly humiliating defeat at Antwerp in 1583.
