ARKAN Kriegsverbrecher Zeljko Raznatovic = serbischer Held Željko Ražnatović (serbisch Жељко Ражнатовић; * 17. April 1952 in Brežice, Slowenien; † 15. Januar 2000 in Belgrad), auch bekannt als Arkan, war Anführer der paramilitärischen Organisation Arkan Tiger (serb. "tigrovi") im ehemaligen Jugoslawien. Ihm wurde durch das ICTY vorgeworfen Völkermord und Vertreibungen an Nicht-Serben während der Jugoslawienkriege befehligt zu haben. Der Montenegriner Ražnatović war Kommandant der im Frühjahr 1991 gegründeten „Serbischen Freiwilligen-Garde" (Srpska Dobrovoljačka Garda, auch als „Arkans Tiger" bekannt), die in Bosnien-Herzegowina und Kroatien, u. a. in den Städten Vukovar, Bijeljina und Zvornik, gegen kroatische und bosnische Einheiten kämpfte [1]. Ražnatović wurde beschuldigt, in den 1970er Jahren Morde und Raubüberfälle in Schweden, Italien, Belgien und den Niederlanden begangen zu haben. Außerdem soll er europaweit in Schutzgelderpressungen und illegales Glücksspiel verwickelt gewesen sein. Bereits 1974 wurde er über Interpol zur Fahndung ausgeschrieben [2]. Vojislav Šešelj, der Vorsitzende der Serbischen Radikalen Partei, beschuldigte Ražnatović, in den 1980ern als Auftragsmörder für den jugoslawischen Geheimdienst gearbeitet zu haben. Gegen Ražnatović erhob der Internationale Strafgerichtshof für das ehemalige Jugoslawien in Den Haag im September 1997 Anklage wegen Völkermordes und der Vertreibung von Nichtserben aus Teilen Bosnien-Herzegovinas [4]. Die britische Regierung beschuldigte ihn, auch im Kosovo aktiv gewesen zu sein: 1992 wurde Ražnatović als Abgeordneter des Wahlkreises Kosovo in das serbische Parlament gewählt. Später war er auch für kurze Zeit Minister der Republik Serbische Krajina. Ražnatović soll mit verschiedenen Frauen insgesamt neun Kinder haben. 1995 heiratete er die Turbo-Folk-Sängerin Svetlana Ražnatović „Ceca". Die Hochzeit mit vielen prominenten Gästen wurde im Fernsehen übertragen. Da Ražnatović sich in der Folgezeit des Krieges in Serbien aufhielt, wo nach ihm nicht gefahndet wurde, konnte er sich dort frei bewegen. Am 15. Januar 2000 wurde Ražnatović in der Lobby des Hotels Intercontinental in Belgrad zusammen mit zwei Leibwächtern erschossen. Die mutmaßlichen Täter, Dragan Nikolić „Gagi", Dobroslav Gavrić, Milan Đuričić „Miki" und Zoran Nikolić „Pegla", wurden 2001 wegen Mordes angeklagt [5], später aber wegen Mangels an Beweisen freigelassen [6]. Der Prozess gegen die Attentäter wurde drei Mal verhandelt, doch die Urteile sind jedes Mal verworfen worden. Nikolić wurde zuletzt 2005 wegen Mordes zu 15 Jahren Haft verurteilt, das Urteil gegen ihn wurde jedoch 2006 vom Obersten Gerichtshof Serbiens erneut annulliert und zur Verhandlung an das Erstgericht zurückverwiesen. Die Auftraggeber des Mordes und ihre Motive liegen weiterhin im Dunkeln. Tibute to Arkan Gunned in a hotel lobby almost 7 years ago, the Serbian warlord known as Arkan lives on in the public mind -- in some cases, literally. "I'm sure he's still alive" said Edna, a well-educated 23-year-old journalism instructor. "I just know it". She theorized that Arkan's killing was faked by Western intelligence agencies, which then spirited him away to testify against Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic at the United Nations war-crimes tribunal. She is not alone. A considerable number of people here said they believe the killing was an elaborate fraud. Arkan, they noted, was an escape artist of Houdini-like abilities who broke out of several European jails during his life of crime. A stunt like this would be just up his alley. "I wouldn't put it past him" said Zoran, a Belgrade postcard seller who, like many of those who talked about the Arkan case, declined to give his full name. Even among the majority who accept that Arkan is really gone, the warlord remains a larger-than-death figure, much talked about and still widely admired. Newspapers are full of articles about his eventful life as an outlaw, militia leader, football-club owner and notorious womanizer who fathered nine children by four different women. Belgrade's Evening News is publishing his life story in daily installments with headlines such as: "He lived like a lion". Between 100 and 200 people a day visit his grave in Belgrade's New Cemetery, the favourite resting place of the city's elite. Arkan: Serbian criminal national hero! part - 2 Željko Ražnatović ("Arkan") - Ordinary juvenile delinquent, bank robber, agent of the serbian secret police, serbian mafia gangster, businessman, politician, paramilitary leader and the world's most notorious ethnic cleanser. The career of Zeljko Raznatovic - alias Arkan - has encompassed all the above, his rise and fall a mirror of the last 30 years in ex-Yugoslav society itself. Goran Vukovic, a fellow gangster who was himself gunned down in Belgrade in 1994, recalled Arkan's early years: "Of all of us, Arkan robbed the most banks; he walked into them almost like they were self-service stores. No one can quarrel with that fact about him. I don't know about politics, but as far as robbery is concerned, he was really unsurpassed." Arkan was first jailed in 1975, when a Brussels court sentenced him to 15 years in prison. He escaped after serving 42 months, establishing a remarkable pattern of break outs from western prisons. He fled jails in Holland and Germany, and evaded arrest in Sweden and Italy. Arkan was chairman of Red Star's fan club, Delije (the Warriors), where he naturally found plenty of aggressive young men from whom he could pick recruits for his criminal gang, and later he created the Serbian Paramilitary Guard known as "Arkanovi Tigrovi (Arkan's Tigers)" By November 1990, he was already working with the Serbian authorities in their attempts to destabilise Croatia. He was arrested in the village of Dvorna Uni by Croatian police and charged with unauthorised possession of weapons. For years Milosevic and his myrmidons insisted that Arkan acted alone. But Arkan has begun to hint that such may not be the case, that Milosevic did know about his activities. "When I was in Croatia, I was under the command of the Yugoslav army," Arkan says. "In Bosnia I was under the command of the MUP [Interior Ministry]." The implication: he was acting under Milosevic's orders. As a result of his success in fighting agains unarmed civils from 1990 to 1992, Zeljko ironically became a national hero and was elected even as a Member of Serbian Parliament with his political formation the "Party of the Serbian Unity". Slobodan Milosevic was once asked by Richard Holbrooke why he didn't do something about Arkan. "I am afraid of him," the Serbian leader have replied. Strange Just as the Serb state built Arkan up, only the state would have been powerful enough to tear him down! The process of eliminating men close to Arkan in order to weaken him and his movement began immediately after the end of the Bosnian war. Secret state police organized or allowed dozens of murders of his most devoted and trusted people. His war buddies, long-standing friends, business partners were all killed professionally within a short period of time and this circle of killings of specific types of people who collaborated with him continued even after Arkan's murder . Arkan was assassinated, on January 15, 2000, at 17:05 GMT in lobby of the elite and fancy Intercontinental Hotel, Belgrade full of hotel guests. Assassin's name is Dobrosav Gavrić, a 23 years old junior member of police mobile brigade. Arkan's termination was a well prepared and thought-out plan that was carefully planned for seven months. The killing was carried out in mob-style to give the appearance that he was a victim of gang war, but it was actually complex assassination of political nature. In conspiracy against him were involved criminals, businessmen, policemen, and politicians, who all gather together to get rid of him, each from their own reasons and interests. Some people from Arkan's close associates began making ambitious plans for their own path to ascension without him, and joined in plotting as inside spies for a secret project. A huge amount of money was promised for his murder, about 4,5 millions of DM which after the bloody job was done they would split among themselves. When later the terrible truth about his slaying was revealed to public it became clear that Arkan was not killed by foreign enemies but by his countrymen. Arkan was a shame for his nation, but still today there are serbs even among politicians that consider him a national hero... .
