Cybotron - Arrakis Cybotron, not to be confused with the American group, was an electronic/experimental music group. Cybotron was formed in 1975 by Steve Maxwell Von Braund and Geoff Green. After the release of Braund's 1975 album, Monster Planet which Green, as well as Gil Matthews (Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Henry Vyhnal and Jim Keays (The Masters Apprentices) contributed to, some songs from this album were later added to the re-released CD, Cybotron. Cybotron released a self-titled album in 1976 containing mainly synthesizers and saxophone. Stylistically, Cybotron were similar to their contemporaries; innovative bands such as Ash Ra Tempel, Hawkwind and Tangerine Dream. They were creating minimalist, repetitive electronica at the same time that Kraftwerk released Autobahn. Throughout subsequent decades, their music received very little recognition from those outside electronic music circles. In this time the most precious substance in the universe is the spice melange, which extends life, expands consciousness and is vital to space travel. The powerful Spacing Guild and its Navigators use the orange spice gas to achieve a sense called prescience by which they safely guide the interstellar ships to any part of the universe using the quantum mechanics of Holtzman generators, an extremely complicated machine which "folds space" (in effect, the ship is moved instantaneously across vast distances). Four planets draw the attention of the Spacing Guild: Arrakis, a desert planet and only source in the universe of the spice; Caladan, home of House Atreides; Giedi Prime, home of House Harkonnen; and Kaitain, Home of the Emperor Shaddam IV. The Guild, fearing a plot that might jeopardize Spice production, send a third stage Navigator to Kaitain demanding explanations from the Emperor, who confidentially lets the Guild know of his plans to destroy House Atreides. The popularity of Duke Leto Atreides has grown within the Landsraad, and he is suspected to be creating a secret army with a technique involving sound; he is now a threat to the Emperor. Shaddam's plan is to give the Atreides control of Arrakis, replacing the Harkonnens, who at an appointed time would launch a sneak attack on the Atreides. Upon being informed of the plot, the Navigator commands the Emperor to kill the Duke's son, Paul Atreides, a young man who dreams prophetic visions of his purpose. The cryptic assassination order draws the attention of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, as Paul Atreides is tied to their centuries long breeding program in search of the Kwisatz Haderach. Before departure, Paul is tested by Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam with a deadly gom jabbar at his throat. Paul is forced to place his hand in a box, which subjects him to excruciating and increasing pain; he passes to Mohiam's satisfaction, withstanding more pain than anyone has before him. Meanwhile, in the industrial world of Giedi Prime, the sadistic Baron Vladimir Harkonnen tells his nephews Glossu Rabban and Feyd-Rautha about his plan to eliminate their centuries long enemies, House Atreides, by manipulating someone very close to the Duke into betraying him. The Atreides leave Caladan for Arrakis, a mysterious world of vast deserts, filled with gigantic sandworms and populated by the Fremen, mysterious people who have long held a prophecy that a messiah would come to lead them to true freedom. Upon arrival to Arrakis, Duke Leto is informed by one of his right-hand men, Duncan Idaho, that the Fremen have been largely underestimated, as they exist in vast numbers in Arrakis and could prove to be powerful allies. Duke Leto gains the trust of the people of Arrakis, proving to be a charismatic and just leader. But before the Duke can establish an alliance with the Fremen, the Harkonnen launch their attack more quickly than the Atreides expect. While the Atreides anticipated a trap, they are unable to withstand a devastating Harkonnen sneak attack, supported by the Emperor's elite troops, the Sardaukar, and aided by a traitor within House Atreides itself, Doctor Wellington Yueh. Captured, Duke Leto dies in a failed attempt to assassinate the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen using a poison gas capsule planted in his tooth by Dr. Yueh, but his son Paul and his concubine Jessica escape into the deep desert. With Jessica's Bene Gesserit abilities and Paul's developing skills, they manage to join a band of native Fremen. Paul emerges as Muad'Dib, the religious and political leader the Fremen have been waiting for. Paul teaches the Fremen to use the weirding modules and begins targeting mining production of spice. The Emperor is warned by the Spacing Guild of the situation on Arrakis, as the Guild fears that Paul would eventually take the Water of Life. The fears of the Spacing Guild are revealed to Paul in a prophetic dream. Paul drinks the Water of Life and enters a coma that disturbs all Bene Gesserits in the universe. Vedute di fabbriche abbandonate fanno da sfondo ad una voce trasformata dalla malattia. E' la voce di Silvestro Capelli, un ex-operaio della storica Breda Fucine di Sesto San Giovanni. E' la particolare voce di un laringectomizzato. Silvestro nel 1996 ha subito un intervento di laringectomia totale per estirpare un tumore causato dall'amianto inalato durante gli anni del lavoro in fabbrica. Come molte altre persone da anni combatte una battaglia sociale e legale. Da una parte ci sono semplici cittadini, dall'altra ci sono le istituzioni, l'Inail, i sindacati, i dirigenti d'azienda, i partiti politici. Racconta Silvestro in Arrakis: Tutti sapevano e nessuno ha parlato. Lo sapevano i sindacati. Lo sapeva la direzione dell'azienda. Lo sapeva l'assessorato alla sanità. Lo sapevano tutti, e non gli operai che c'erano dentro. E così ci hanno condannato a morte, a menomazioni, ma non solamente noi che lavoravamo all'interno della fabbrica. Perché le fabbriche non sono state costruite sotto una campana di vetro [...] Motivi e obiettivi Arrakis non vuole essere un'inchiesta sul problema amianto, non vuole essere un documentario di archeologia industriale. Vuole rappresentare invece un tributo a quelle persone che hanno sofferto in nome del progresso e a quei luoghi che sono stati incredibili simboli di quello stesso progresso. Arrakis è un attestato di esistenza per persone e luoghi dimenticati. L'obiettivo comunicativo non è informare, ma emozionare. Suscitare interesse verso problemi di cui molto scarsa è la percezione del pericolo. Credo che l'abbinamento della voce di Silvestro ai luoghi dell'abbandono industriale italiano sia un atto molto potente e molto simbolico. MD Dune 2 Battle for Arrakis (Atreides) A somewhat rare cartridge, Dune 2 for the Sega Megadrive/Genesis manages to surpass the PC original, even without the much needed mouse support. Questo documentario non ha intenti commerciali, rappresenta semplicemente levoluzione di una tesi di laurea triennale in Linguaggi dei Media.
