Hasse - Artaserse "Pallido il sole" Andreas Scholl Johann Adolph Hasse Artaserse, "Pallido il sole" Artabano's aria Thanks as always to MehdiCaps for his help in editing the score. This recording: From the album Heroes Andreas Scholl The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Conducted by Roger Norrington Artaserse is the name of a number of Italian operas, all based on a text by Metastasio. Artaserse is the Italian form of the name of a Persian king, Artaxerxes. The libretto was first set by Leonardo Vinci in 1730 for Rome. It was subsequently set by Hasse in 1730 for Venice and in 1760 for Naples, by Gluck in 1741 for Milan, by Graun in 1743 for Stuttgart, by Galuppi in 1749 for Vienna, by Johann Christian Bach in 1760 for London, and many other times. The text was often altered. Thomas Arne's 1762 Artaxerxes is set to an English libretto that is based on Metastasio's. The opera was famously performed in 1734 as a pasticcio, featuring arias by various composers such as Attilio Ariosti, Niccolo Porpora and Riccardo Broschi. It was in this that Broschi's brother, Farinelli, sang one of his best known arias, "Son qual nave ch'agitata". Translation: Pale the sun and murky the sky, punishment threatens, death lies in wait, all inspires remorse and horror. Fear envelops me in icy coldness, sorrow makes my life bitter, I shudder at my own feelings. Tags: |

Pallido il sole - by male Haute-Contre (not falsetto) http://farinelli55.blogspot.com/ Farinelli Scores. This is me... (Arturo Escorza Pedraza, the mexican haute-contre & sopranist), singing an alto aria: "Pallido il Sole" from the opera "Artaserse" by Johann Adolph Hasse, aria of Artabano. I'm singing this in my full range voice, I'm not singing with falsetto. Looking on Wikipedia I've found this: "The altino, essentially a male contralto, is a rare male voice type, commonly considered the "true" countertenor. This person can sing high without falsetto that the usual male passagio. Typically, this rare voice has problems reaching depths of even low C (I have those problems :p) unlike most men, and usually has an androgynous tone, even when speaking. The typical altino will speak normally between the range of F# and B below Middle C, (I speak in that range, haha! in "A"), more in keeping a female than a typical male, whose speaking voice settles closer to low C. An even rarer full voice can sing tenor and female contralto (or even mezzo-soprano) parts with equal ease." Händel: Io t'abbraccio (Rodelinda) - Rial, Jaroussky High resolution and stereo sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BljDpDZ3R6A&fmt=18 "Io t'abbraccio" (Rodelinda, Bertarido), from the opera "Rodelinda" HWV.19, music by Georg Friedrich Händel, libretto by Antonio Salvi, revised by Nicola Francesco Haym; created in London (King's Theatre, Haymarket) on February 13, 1725. Rodelinda: Núria Rial, soprano. Bertarido: Philippe Jaroussky, countertenor. Ensemble Artaserse, conducted by Philippe Jaroussky. We couldn't resist the pleasure of interpreting for you what is, to me, one of Händel's most beautiful duets: "Io t'abbraccio", from "Rodelinda"). Some imprecisions here and there (especially the violins), but overall a very beautiful interpretation of this duet. This was the first encore of the concert. I cut the applause. *** RODELINDA e BERTARIDO Io t'abbraccio. Translation (by Kenneth Chalmers): I embrace you. And more bitter and harsh than death to my heart is this farewell which tears us apart. Ah, my life! Ah, my treasure! If I do not die, then how cruel is that distress which brings death, but does not kill. *** M.D. Tags: Handel Io t'abbraccio Rodelinda Ensemble Artaserse Nuria Rial Philippe Jaroussky |

Händel: Se vago rio (Aminta e Fillide) - Jaroussky High resolution and stereo sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40lItEYxfXg&fmt=18 "Se vago rio" (Aminta), from the dramatic cantata "Aminta e Fillide" HWV.83 (also known as "Arresta il passo"), music by Georg Friedrich Händel, created in Rome (Palazzo Ruspoli) on July 14, 1708. This aria became the mermaids' aria a due "Il vostro maggio" in "Rinaldo" (1711). Philippe Jaroussky (countertenor), Ensemble Artaserse, conducted by Philippe Jaroussky. Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, March 2, 2008. In this recording, the aria has been transposed down by 3 semitones. Also, the first three bars in the da capo have been switched with the next three bars, and I have edited the score accordingly. As you will notice, the solo violin doesn't play all its part, and adds a lot of ornamentation when it plays. Needless to say, the score doesn't mention that the accompaniment should be played pizzicato, and implies the presence of a harpsichord in some passages (tutti). Translation (by Anthony Hicks): AMYNTAS Though a pretty stream may break up its lovely silver among rocks, at last it happily comes to rest in the sea; [but] my eyes, ever weeping, find no heart that offers respite to their suffering. *** M.D. Tags: Handel Se vago rio Aminta Fillide Ensemble Artaserse Philippe Jaroussky |

Händel: Ombra cara (Radamisto) - Jaroussky High resolution and stereo sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWwtm0PQa_Q&fmt=18 "Ombra cara" (Radamisto), from the opera "Radamisto" HWV.12a (first version), music by Georg Friedrich Händel, libretto probably by Nicola Francesco Haym; created in London (King's Theatre, Haymarket) on April 27, 1720. Soprano Margherita Durastanti was Radamisto in the first cast. Philippe Jaroussky, countertenor. Ensemble Artaserse, conducted by Philippe Jaroussky. Église des Minimes - Brussells, Belgium, February 26, 2008. Performed at "Baroque pitch" (a semitone lower than modern pitch). Simply sublime. I will not make fun of you if you tell me that you cried while listening to this aria. Beautiful and tasteful ornamentation at the end of the B section and in the da capo. Gorgeous high notes, and some intense moments, that sound sincere to me. Note: Philippe Jaroussky sings "mia vita" (my life) instead of "mia sposa" (my wife) in the da capo. This variant doesn't appear in Friedrich Chrysander's edition, that I used in the video. I think it makes that passage even more touching. E poi, tosto, ove tu stai, mi vedrai venir a volo e, fedel, t'abbraccerò. My own translation: Dear ghost of my wife, ah! rest in peace, and, joyous, wait for the revenge that I will take! Then, soon, wherever you are, you will see me flying to you and, faithful, i will embrace you. M.D. Tags: Handel Ombra cara Radamisto Ensemble Artaserse Philippe Jaroussky |

Händel: Bramo aver mille vite (Ariodante) - Rial, Jaroussky High resolution and stereo sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWRzaWPP5po&fmt=18 "Bramo aver mille vite" (Ariodante, Ginevra), from the opera "Ariodante" HWV.33, music by Georg Friedrich Händel, anonymous libretto, after Antonio Salviati; created in London (King's Theatre, Haymarket) on January 8, 1735. Soprano Anna Maria Strada and mezzo-soprano castrato Giovanni Carestini were Ginevra and Ariodante in the first cast. Ginevra: Núria Rial, soprano. Ariodante: Philippe Jaroussky, countertenor. Ensemble Artaserse, conducted by Philippe Jaroussky. Église des Minimes - Brussells, Belgium, February 26, 2008. Performed at "Baroque pitch" (a semitone lower than modern pitch). At the end of a concert that was rather average, in my opinion (they would do much better four days later in Paris), the singers managed to surpass themselves in the last two works of the program. Philippe Jaroussky sang a gorgeous "Ombra cara" (I have not found any recording coming close), which I have already posted. Then, with Núria Rial, he sang this duet, which could easily make your head spin. You can find it on YouTube with Anne Sofie von Otter and Lynne Dawson (from Marc Minkowski's 1997 recording), and also with Angelika Kirchschlager and Danielle de Niese (from a 2007 performance conducted by Christophe Rousset); I also have Nicholas McGegan's 1995 recording with Lorraine Hunt and Juliana Gondek; I very much like all those artists but, in my opinion, Jaroussky and Rial gave here the best version of the four. This seems amazingly difficult to sing, and they do it with "easy virtuosity". Once again, we find nice and tasteful ornamentations, and there's a very beautiful conclusion. Note: the score (Chrysander edition) has "haver" (old spelling) instead of "aver" (short for "avere", to have). I've adopted the modern spelling for the title of this video, like I always do. My translation: ARIODANTE I would love to have a thousand lives, to dedicate them to you. GINEVRA I would love to have a thousand hearts, to dedicate them to you. ARIODANTE and GINEVRA But, in this one that I give you, more than in a thousand, there are love, constancy and faith. Castrats, la voix des anges - 6/6 Castrats, la voix des anges, a film by Stéphane Ghez (2006) SIXTH PART 0:02 Philippe Jaroussky, before a concert in Paris, salle Gavaud (29 March 2005), with the ensemble Artaserse; 0:21 rehearsing the aria "Placido in letto ombroso" from Antonio Vivaldi's cantata Care selve, amici prati, RV 671; 1:19 talking about the difficulty for a countertenor to sing arias written for castrati; 1:56 rehearsing the aria "Cor ingrato, dispietato" from Antonio Vivaldi's cantata Pianti, sospiri, RV 676; 2:33 talking about the private life of the castrati; 3:08 just before entering the stage; 4:01 performing "Placido in letto ombroso". Claire Antonini, theorbo Emilia Gliozzi, violoncello Yoko Nakamura, harpsichord ___ The last cello note and the last theorbo arpeggio were shortened in the original video, so I edited the sound track: I copied the conclusion that you can hear at the 1:15 time mark, and pasted it at the end, in place of the shortened one. ___ M.D. Tags: Castrats voix anges castrati |
