The tune was first published in 1917. The title refers to Tishomingo, Mississippi, although the cover of the original sheet music shows a scene in Mexico. The original lyrics are as follows: First verse Oh, Mississippi, Oh, Mississippi, My heart cries out for You in sadness, I want to be where The wintry winds don't blow, Down where the southern Moon swings low, That's where I want to go. Chorus I'm goin' to Tishomingo, Because I'm sad today, I wish to linger, Way down old Dixie way. Oh, my weary heart cries out in pain, Oh, how I wish that I was back again, With a race, In a place, Where they make you welcome all the time. Way down in Mississippi, Among the cypress trees, They get you dippy, With their strange melodies, To resist temptation, I just can't refuse, In Tishomingo I wish to linger, Where they play the weary blues. Second verse Tonight I'm prayin', Tonight I'm sayin', Oh Lord please take the Train that takes me, To Tishomingo, 'Way down old Dixie way,: Where southern folks are Always gay, That's why you hear me say. The tune became a jazz standard, and has been recorded numerous times from when it was new into the 21st century. Opel Ascona A, 2,4 L, Weber 55 Found a video of an old Opel I used to have. Made this when selling the car, sort of as a pro-mo. The car had the looks of something a 16-year old gearhead would put together; dark, tinted windows, crappy paintjob, and the interior was even worse. Also, it basically had no suspension, due to stupendously short springs. And the brakes were crap too! But here's the fun part: the 2,4 litre rally motor. Had twin side draft Weber 55's, a modified cylinder head with 45-40 valves, Enem P2 camshaft, MSD ignition etc, etc. Something like 230 HP, linked to a fivespeed Getrag gearbox and a diff brake rear axle. Lots of fun, especially when meeting the occasional city slicker with a brand new sportscar. Oh, and my friend Linda, whom held the camera, was pretty funny too. Paul Barbarin's year of birth is often given as 1901, but his brother Louis Barbarin (born 1902) said he was quite sure that Paul was several years older than him, and Paul Barbarin simply refused to answer the year of his birth in an interview at Tulane's Jazz Archives. From the late 1910s on, Barbarin divided his time between Chicago, New York City and New Orleans, and touring with such bands as those of Joe "King" Oliver, Luis Russell, Louis Armstrong, and Henry Red Allen. From the 1950s on he usually led his own band. He, along with Louis Cottrell, Jr. founded and led the second incarnation of the Onward Brass Band from 1960 to 1969. Barbarin was an accomplished and knowledgeable musician, a member of ASCAP, and the composer of a number of pop tunes and Dixieland standards, including Come Back Sweet Papa, Don't Forget To Mess Around (When You're Doing The Charleston), Bourbon Street Parade, and (Paul Barbarin's) Second Line. The earliest mention of Dan Barrett was in the Melody Maker, 10 February 1973, which reported that he played "Ory's Creole Trombone" at the end of Kid Ory's Funeral on 28 January that year. He also played with other musicians such as Teddy Buckner, Andy Blakeney and Alton Redd, all past members of Ory's band, during the funeral proceedings. In addition to leading a quintet with Howard Alden, Barrett has performed as a sideman with Benny Goodman and Buck Clayton.
