Stunts are a big part of many action movies. Stunt performances are highly choreographed and may be rigorously rehearsed for hours, days and sometimes weeks before a performance. British stuntman Joe Powell volunteered for the stunt after the rest of the stuntmen came down with a mysterious ailment. He fell 80 feet onto cardboard boxes balanced on the edge of a ravine. If he had missed the boxes, no safety wire or parachute would have stopped him falling to the bottom of the ravine. Making the situation more dangerous was the rope bridge, which caused Powell to spin as he fell. An Experimental Wing Aerofoil - 1/6 Scale When I was about 10 years old I was given a complex balsa wood glider kit, I took one look at all the fancy bits and pieces and decided that I wasn't going to spend weeks and weeks building a complex flying machine only to watch it get smashed to pieces on its maiden flight, so I built a glider my way with the 5mm square strips in the box. It was the conventional glider shape but it had a leading and trailing wing spar. The bottom of the wing was covered with a single layer of tissue paper. The top was left open exposing the two balsa strips. The tail was made the same way and had paper elevators. I threw it in the school hall and it flew about 30 meters and only dropped about one meter. I have spent 35 or so years wondering why it flew so well. Without a proper Aerofoil and square leading and trailing edges. Well the square leading edges weren't exactly at 90 degrees to the direction of flight because the wing had an angle of attack that flat leading edge leaning back a few degrees probably smashed the air upwards like a F1 one cars rear wing does creating an artificial Aerofoil and the negative pressure. The air then came back down on the tissue paper and then had to lift up again to get over the rear square spar, so I am guessing it said I would rather just go almost straight over it and leave some negative pressure on top of the wing. Recently I decided to learn how to work with carbon fiber and I thought I may as well try this little experiment at the same time emulating the balsa glider but smoothing out the airflow to avoid separation and reduce drag. Well I cant say it flies like a balsa glider this is a monster made from carbon fiber and aircraft Dacron material it has 25 coins (diameter 60mm x 3mm thick) in the nose to balance it, its heavy, if it was either bigger, lighter or faster it would be more impressive. I insisted on using the same materials as I would on a full-scale version, so I can learn the limits of the materials and try improving on the manufacturing methods. As you can imagine there would be a better wing area to weight ratio on a full sized one so its a bit of a dog, however at 60 seconds it has some air speed and starts to level out nicely. There are limits with scale -- a hot air balloon with a volume of less than one cubic meter will never fly no matter how much you heat up the air. I was actually so surprised it flew at all that's why I am posting it I would love to know why it works, every aviation expert I have ever discussed it with told me it was the biggest load of rubbish he had ever heard, so I have done a practical test and keeping in mind this is not radio controlled and has no motor/engine on it, I think with a little more airspeed and some pilot input it will fly in an acceptable manner. I haven't done it to challenge the conventional wing shape that obviously is better.
