In episode #39, Mirror Mirror, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura get beamed to a 'mirror' universe populated by barbarians, and their counterparts are beamed to the 'normal' universe. Barbarians at the gate The Turkish invasion of Cyprus The Turkish invasion of the Republic of Cyprus on July 20th 1974. It is our claim, supported by the historical record and research, that Turkey launched an illegal invasion, of a small independent country, member of the UN, expelled from their homes 200000 and killed 6000 Greek Cypriots. Turkey 33 years later, still illegally occupies 37% of the Republic of Cyprus, despite numerous UN resolutions against it. The full text of those resolutions can be found at the UN website: http://www.un.int/cyprus/resolut.htm There are 7 General Assembly resolutions and numerous Security Council resolutions that Turkey is ignoring: 1.General Assembly resolutions: a.# 3212 (XXIX) 1st November 1974: "Respect sovereignty..." Vote was 117-0. b.# 3395 (XXX) 20th November 1975: "Demands the withdrawal ...of all foreign armed forces." Vote was 117-1. Turkey voted against. c.# 31/12 12th November 1976: "Reaffirm 3212 and 3395 and demands urgent implementation." Vote was 94-1. Turkey voted against. d.# 32/15 9 November 1977: "...urgent implementation of 3212." Vote was 116-6. Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh and Uganda voted against. e.# 33/15 9 November 1978: "...demand implementation of 3212." Vote was 110-4. Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia voted against. f.# 34/30 November 20, 1979: "Deploring the continued presence of foreign armed forces..." Vote was 99-5. Turkey, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Djibouti voted against. g.# 37/253 May13, 1983: "Reaffirming the principle of the inadmissibility of occupation and acquisition of territories by force." Vote was 103-5. Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Somalis voted against. 2.Security Council resolutions: S/RES/353 (1974) of 20 July 1974: "...Calls upon all States to respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus." Adopted unanimously. S/RES/354 (1974) of 23 July 1974: "...Calls upon all States to respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus." Adopted unanimously. S/RES/355 (1974) of August 1 1974 : To implement #353. Vote was 12-0. S/RES/357 (1974) of August 14 1974: To implement #353. Adopted unanimously. S/RES/358 (1974) of August 15 1974: To fully implement #353,354,355 and 357. Adopted unanimously. S/RES/359 (1974) of August 15 1974: "deplores the fact UN soldiers have been killed", "Deeply deplores the fact that members of the United Nations Peace-keeping Force in Cyprus have been killed and wounded","...to fully respect the international status of the United Nations Force." Adopted 14-0. S/RES/360 (1974) August 15 1974: "Gravely concerned at the deterioration of the situation in Cyprus resulting from the further military operation, which constituted a most serious threat to peace and security in the Eastern Mediterranean area." Adopted 11-0. S/RES/361 (1974) August 30 1974: "...grave concern at the plight of the refugees." Adopted unanimously. Turkey's "legal argument" for the invasion was: "The Treaty of Guarantee gave them the right to intervene to protect the Turkish minority" of 18% at a time. This is patently false. Let us examine the Treaty of Guarantee argument: Article IV of the Treaty of Guarantee reads: "...In so far as common or concerted action may not prove possible, each the three guaranteeing Powers reserves the right to take action with the sole aim of re-establishing the state of affairs created by the present Treaty." But Turkey's invasion, did not "re-establish the state of affairs created by the present Treaty". Far from it; it split up, by the force of arms, a small independent country, that this very Treaty created, on the 16th of August 1960, a member of the UN, and created a "pseudo-state" called "TRNC" that no country in the World except Turkey recognizes, consisting of 37% of the Republic of Cyprus. Furthermore, "the state of affairs created by the present Treaty" was re-established by August 14th 1974, on July 23rd 1974. Yet Turkey launched another unprovoked attack on that date, despite the UN resolutions and occupied 37% of the island, up from 5% it occupied on August 13th. The text of the Treaty of Guarantee can be found here: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Guarantee In addition, Sir Frank Soskice, former Attorney General of the United Kingdom, on the 1st November 1963, he stated: "It is my opinion that the wording of article IV of the Treaty of Guarantee, even if it could be said that under any particular circumstances permit a unilateral military intervention, under the present circumstances do not leave any room for such action to Turkey, unless it is approved by the Security Council." No such approval was sought or given to Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus has excellent prospects, as a member of the European Union. In contrast the Turkish Cypriots in the North of the island, who are migrating from it in record numbers, are also the victims of the illegal occupation by Turkey, of the Republic of Cyprus.
