Nobel Prize for Medicine 2008 WONG: The Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to French scientists who discovered the AIDS virus and a German who found the virus that causes cervical cancer. Heres more. STORY: A fitting celebration for winning a Nobel Prize. German scientist Harald zur Hausen from the University of Duesseldorf and a former director of the the German Cancer Research Centre is one of this year's winners of the Nobel prize for medicine or physiology. He took half of the prize of 10 million Swedish crowns - or 1.4 million U.S. dollars - for his work discovering the virus that causes cervical cancer. The other winners named in Stockholm were the French scientists Luc Montagnier of the World Foundation for AIDS and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi of the Institut Pasteur, given the award for their discovery of the AIDS virus. The Nobel Assembly said the three laureates had discovered two important, new viruses, something which has led to an improved global health. Luc Montagnier, was congratulated in Abidjan in Ivory Coast, where he was holding a lecture. Montagnier's award is a decisive vote in a long-running dispute over whether it was he or Dr. Robert Gallo, formerly of the U.S. National Cancer Institute, who discovered and identified the deadly virus HIV, which has killed 25 million people since it was identified in the 1980s. Meanwhile zur Hausen was recognized for research based on his idea that human papilloma virus caused cervical cancer, the second most common cancer among women. Research that now has a highly practical application: [Harald zur Hausen, Nobel Prize Laureate]: "The major effect is clearly the development of a vaccine today against these virus infections and this vaccine protects against about 70 percent of precursor lesions of cervical cancer." Zur Hausen says this injection should also prevent cervical cancer, a disease which an estimated 500,000 women are diagnosed with each year. Tags: ntd ntdtv news |
