Elizabeth Taylor -"True Love" - by Richard Bassett Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had the love affair that defined and changed 20th century romance forever. Both married to others when they met, their two year affair affected the lives of ten adults and children, not to mention the international scandal it caused, before they married. For the next ten years they were hopelessly in love...each stating that they would die without the other. Well, maybe there was too much love and they suffocated each other with it. A divorce, remarriage and another divorce took place while each of their lives took each other to different parts of the globe. Never being able to be without each other, they were destined for a third reconciliation until Richard Burton suddenly died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Elizabeth collapsed. In his diaries, Richard revealed that he was prepared to give up everything, once more, if Elizabeth Taylor would return to him. She conquered an addiction problem and was ready to settle in with him once more, but he sadly died. Twice death took the men that she desperately loved. With Richard gone, she threw herself into AIDS fund raising which may have given her another purpose in life now that the man she loved was no longer with her. Their twenty two years together was a series of one collision after another and the aftermath reminding them just how strong the bonds were between them. Such a love. Seven weeks later she was in front of the camera filming, "Elephant Walk" (released on April 21, 1954) with a perfect 19 inch waist. She was a 21 year old true beauty. Having been given the role from actress Vivien Leigh (who had suffered a nervous breakdown) Elizabeth found herself embroiled in a story line that she was all too familiar with. The eternal triangle. Elizabeth Taylor - "Raintree County" - by Richard Bassett In editing the films of Dame Elizabeth Taylor to view (here) on YouTube, I now see what George Stevens, John Huston, Joseph Mankiewicz, Richard Brooks, Edward Dmytryk and countless other directors and cinematographers see regarding the acting skills and talent of Dame Elizabeth. She calls herself an instinctual actress, and without the benefit of dialogue, the emotions that pour out of her are amazing. Without the luxury of words, I see (with only the slightest hint of facial movements) her emotions range from black to white, then back to black. No doubt that she and the excellent Montgomery Clift raised each other up personally and professionally. It is easy to see how they completed each other. He gave her acting, and she gave him unconditional love for the rest of his short life. What wonderful gifts. What wonderful friends. What wonderful soulmates. Montgomery belonged in the modern world of today whereas Elizabeth Taylor is timeless. Catch 'Raintree County' for the acting techniques of Montgomery and Elizabeth, alone. Again, it will be a treat. Elizabeth Taylor - "Cleopatra" - by Richard Bassett Cleopatra" started pre-production in 1958 and it was released in 1963. And it is a film that urge everyone to see. Prepare to spend an evening at home. It is a very long but interesting film (despite what critics say). It was said to be the most expensive movie that 20th Century Fox made...and Dame Elizabeth Taylor walked away with seven million dollars. She discovered how to be a shrewd businesswoman. Maybe an attribute that Mike Todd had instilled in her. But there is a new generation of Elizabeth Taylor fame who believe that her career started with "Cleopatra". I receive messages from them every day. They do not know the history that Elizabeth Taylor had had pre 1963. And it was quite a history. This new generation of Elizabeth Taylor fans know her from her HIV/AIDS Fundraising, which is a cause that Elizabeth was put on this Earth to fight. She readily states that at the conception of AIDS, she (as Hollywood) thought that it was a horrible disease, killing lovely people that she had known and worked with. With the help of Dr.Mathilde Krim, they created AmFAR (The American Foundation of AIDs Research) in 1985. Elizabeth served as Chairwoman of the Board for AmFar for many years. She went on to created fundraising events at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993...again, raising millions of dollars every year. Her own foundation sends money to AIDS Service Organizations all over the world for direct client/patient care. Dame Elizabeth Taylor was Queen of The Nile, but now she is an angel, here, on Earth. Elizabeth Taylor - "Hollywood" - by Richard Bassett HOLLYWOOD.....The magical land where anything and everything happens. I lived there for a dozen years (1979-1990) and anything and everything always seemed to be always happening to me. Well, that is another story altogether. Dame Elizabeth lived, primarily, in Los Angeles until she started to travel the globe with Richard Burton in 1962. And in 1982, she made Los Angeles here permanent home once more and has lived there ever since. To those who are not familiar with the land, it may seem commercial and a bit bizarre at first glance. I was living there in my 20's and had a wonderful time. Sometimes I daydream about living there again. What if?? Again, oh well. Elizabeth pulled the film industry together in the late 1980's when AIDS was literally ending the lives of so many industry employees'. The death of Rock Hudson showed Hollywood that the deadly disease could affect one of its own. Sadly, it didn't stop there. But Elizabeth relentlessly pulled them all together into forming one of the strongest bonds we have in this nation today. Elizabeth Taylor - High School Years - by Richard Bassett Elizabeth Taylor did not go to a conventional high school. She was schooled at MGMs Little Red Schoolhouse and her high school years were from 1946 to 1950. School wasnt an eight hour a day chore. Three hours were spent in school and three hours were spent on the movie set. Early on, her social life was uncomplicated and a bit lonely. At 14, she met Marshall Thompson, who gave her first kiss on Christmas Eve 1946. She developed a crush on both Peter Lawford (1947) and Robert Stack (1947). She was engaged to be engaged to Army Lieutenant Glenn Davis (1948). As he went to Korea, she had a letter out to him every night. But when she met 27 year old William Pawley, poor Glenn was no more. Elizabeth announced her first engagement in June 1949. She was 17 years old. When William wanted her to give up her career for him, the romance ended. She fell in love with Montgomery Clift in the autumn of 1949, but he was gay. They developed a lifelong friendship. Next, she dated singer, Vic Damone before meeting, Nicky Hilton, who would become her first husband. She graduated from high school in January 1950, a month before she announced her second engagement. Elizabeth Taylor - "Mike Todd" - by Richard Bassett Mike Todd was one of the two great loves in the life of Dame Elizabeth Taylor. They met on June 30, 1956, married on February 2, 1957 and he sadly and tragically was killed in a plane crash on March 22, 1958...leaving a widow and a four month old daughter, Elizabeth Francis Todd, fatherless. Elizabeth Taylor's life changed when she met Mike Todd.
