Space Escapade - Les Baxter Tribute This is a tribute to arranger, conductor and composer Les Baxter. Some of his work is ahead of its time, or perhaps from out of time. Take an imaginary flight into space. He certainly had an influence on how the music sounded in popular and film music. He was able to master many different styles. Les Baxter was popular during the "Decade of High Fidelity Sound" (the 1950's). The first major release was his 1947 production of the music of Harry Revel. "Music Out Of The Moon" was an album of 78 R.P.M. records featuring a small jazz ensemble, a chorus, a piano, a novachord keyboard, and a theremin. (The theremin was an electronic instrument invented in the early 1900's that produced eerie sounds by the placement of hands in close proximity to but not touching the apparatus). The theremin was played by Dr. Samuel Hoffman, known for playing on the classic movie soundtrack for "The Day The Earth Stood Still." There are no theremins in Space Escapade, but this elevated music is serenely calming on a trip through outer space. There is even a robot. There was a practice of adding extra sounds on the mono versions that were not on the stereo records, a trend that was to continue with other artists--including The Beatles. Her mother was the late actress and sitcom creator Whitney Blake, and her father is Tom Baxter, who worked in radio. Her stepfather is sitcom writer, Allan Manings. She was married three times, most notably to actor David Birney, whom she met on the set of the sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie; she played his wife on the series. After the show was canceled, the couple became engaged and were married in 1974. From that date until their divorce in 1989, she was credited as Meredith Baxter Birney, a name still commonly associated with her by the general public as she went by it during her most prominent period of work. She is best known for her work on two television shows. She first became popular in Hollywood playing the role of Nancy Lawrence Maitland on the television drama Family from 1976 to 1980. She received two Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Continuing Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, in 1977 and 1978. The second role she is well-known for is ex-flower child Elyse Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties, which aired from 1982 to 1989. (Coincidentally, Meredith was born on the same date as her Family Ties husband, Michael Gross but in a different city.) Since Family Ties ended its run, Meredith has been directing and starring in TV movies.
