Beating The Taliban By The Book - Afghanistan August 2008 Can America really beat the Taliban using a textbook? We take a look at the practice behind the theory, as Charlie Company attempt to follow the instructions laid out in the Counterinsurgency Field Manual. Seen as "a modern military textbook for winning hearts and minds and outwitting the enemy" the book also known as the COIN Manual, was written by some of America's finest military minds. So can the Americans really win by the book? The Manual states: "Counterinsurgents often achieve the most meaningful success in garnering public support...with activities that do not include killing insurgents". Yet for all the activities that exclude killing, this is a war. The American troops are at their best when under attack and the other side of war is reveling in the death of your enemies. "It's like the Superbowl; or like Manchester United and Chelsea, we're cheering for our team," claims one soldier laughing and celebrating with his comrades as Taliban are killed. The Manual also states: "Executing COIN operations is complex, demanding and tedious. There are no quick solutions." Few know this better than the soldiers who have been here for over a year and those forced to chop down trees with axes after their chainsaws fail to work. "It's almost like all of this stuff that we're doing is worthless." America expects its soldiers to be nation builders as well as warriors but are they simply asking too much? 8 teens arrested in beating of Lakeland girl Eight teenagers have been arrested after filming the beating of another teen and threatening to post the video on the Internet, sheriff's officials said. Victoria Lindsay was attacked on March 30 by six teenage girls when she arrived at a friend's home, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said. Two girls confronted Lindsay when she walked in, yelling and threatening her, an arrest report showed. Another girl struck her in the head several times and then slammed her head into the bedroom wall, knocking her unconscious. When she woke up, she was on the couch in the living room surrounded by the six girls. The teens blocked the door, held Lindsay down and began beating her, the report said. Two teenage boys waited outside the home as lookouts. All eight were charged last week with battery and false imprisonment, which are third-degree felonies, the report said. Lindsay was taken to the hospital by ambulance and treated for a concussion, damage to her left eye and left ear, and numerous bruises, the report said. Lindsay's father said the teens' motivation for the attack was to produce a video that would become popular on YouTube, a video-sharing Web site. But the mother of one of the girls said that Lindsay had provoked the other teens by threatening and insulting them on MySpace, a social networking Web site. The video and a transcript of the incident will be released early this week, sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilder told The Ledger of Lakeland. High school bullies get a good beating Spirit of Jeet Kune Do: Once Upon a Time in High School (Korean: 말죽거리 잔혹사) is a 2004 South Korean drama/action film. The background of the film was set in a high school in South Korea, 1978. Kwon, who starred as Hyun-soo, transfers to another school. He is sent to a bottom-rank class and experiences violence in classroom by the group of gangsters in his class, led by Jong-hun, who is a stereotypical Korean bully in school. The teachers are also depicted as authoritarian to the students, using violence to the students for the sake of discipline, as did most Korean teachers in the 70s and to some extent in the modern days as well. Hyun-soo, after a failed relationship with Eunjoo, decides that he will no longer put up with the conduct of Jong-hun and his boys as well as the harsh and violent disciplinary techniques being put up by the teachers, trained himself up in Jeet Kune Do by himself. His father, a martial artist, frequently resorted to minor violence to discipline his son. Hyun-soo challenged Jong-hun to a duel one day when he was no longer able to put up with his behaviour. Jong-hun and his men were grievously injured from Hyun-soo's whips. Hyun-soo left the military school voluntarily immediately after the duel, and his father subsequently transferred him to a private academy. Hyun-soo met his friend Hamburger again at the college and talked about their past. Jackie Chan's 1978 movie Drunken Master was featured in the background at the end of the movie as Hamburger and Hyun-soo played a fighting game in front of the cinema complex.
