Singin The Blues - Bix Beiderbecke The Frankie "Tram" Trumbauer Orchestra feat. Bix Beiderbecke - Singin' the Blues. The first minute of the song is a sax solo by Trumbauer. The second minute is Bix's cornet solo. The third minute features a short clarinet solo by Jimmy Dorsey, who was the clarinetist in Trumbauer's Orchestra at that time. The guitarist on this track is Eddie Lang. This song is considered a jazz classic because Bix and, to a lesser degree, Tram were able to make a slow-tempo jazz ballad swing. This ability to make slow-tempo swinging jazz would later be emulated by jazz musicians ranging from Lester Young to John Coltrane to Miles Davis. Royal Garden Blues -- Bix Beiderbecke 1927 Royal Garden Blues -- Bix Beiderbecke 1927 On October 5 1927 Bix Beiderbecke recorded one of the most important jazz recordings in its history. Royal Garden Blues with his New Orleans Lucky Seven sometimes known as his Gang. Bix had some superb musicians in his band: Bill Rank on trombone, Don Murray on clarinet, Adrian Rollini on bass sax, Frank Signorelli on piano and Chauncey Moorehouse on drums. Through the decades this recording has been a sample of how jazz can be played and has influenced many of the great white jazz musicians like Bobby Hackett, Jimmy McPartland soon after and today more the likes of Tom Pletcher, Bent Persson and certainly Hans Carling and his New Coling Orchestra. The most amazing rendition of this tune is being played in 1984 by Hans Carling together with his band and his young musical family. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5xKu8v9j1g Tags: jazz classic bix beiderbecke |

Bix Beiderbecke - I Don't Mind Walking In The Rain Since it's pouring down outside and since we are celebrating Bix Beiderbecke's birthday tomorrow, I thought it was an appropriate moment for this song, of which the complete title is "I Don't Mind Walking In The Rain (When I'm Walking In The Rain With You). This is one of Bix's last recordings, displaying a superb blend of hot instrumental solos and a delicate, romantic vocal. Bix Beiderbecke was one of the great jazz musicians of the 20's; he was also a child of the Jazz Age who died very young due to alcohol abuse. In 1923 Beiderbecke joined the Wolverine Orchestra and recorded with them the following year. Bix was influenced by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, but soon surpassed their playing. In late 1924 Bix left the Wolverines to join Jean Goldkette's Orchestra, but his inability to read music eventually made him lose the job. In 1926 he worked with Frankie Trumbauer's Orchestra. He rejoined Jean Goldkette's Orchestra briefly, before signing up as a soloist with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra. Nevertheless, In 1929 Bix's drinking began to catch up with him. He suffered from delirium tremens and he had a nervous breakdown while playing with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. Whiteman was very kind to Bix, keeping him on full pay long after his breakdown, and promised him that his chair was always open in the Whiteman Orchestra, but, Bix was never the same again, and never rejoined the band. He returned to New York in 1930 and made a few more records with his friend Hoagy Carmichael and under the name of Bix Beiderbecke and his Orchestra. The piece presented here belongs to that recording session on September 8th, 1930 for Victor. Vocal by Wes Vaughan; Joe Venuti directed the band and played the violin; further personnel included, besides Bix Beiderbecke on cornet, Irving Brodsky, piano; Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, clarinet and alto saxophone; Tommy Dorsey, trombone; Bud Freeman, tenor saxophone; Gene Krupa, drums; Eddie Lang, guitar; Min Leibrook, bass saxophone, as well as Ray Lodwig, trumpet. It should be noted that I found no picture of Bix's own orchestra; the photograph featured in the video was taken when he played with the Wolverines. Bix Beiderbecke with Frankie Trumbauer & His Orchestra -Lila This outstanding record is one of the great series Bix Beiderbecke recorded with Frank Trumbauer's orchestra. As for Frankie Trumbauer, he got his start playing in several dance bands in the Midwest and eventually became musical director of Jean Goldkette's Orchestra. He led his own band at the Acadia Ballroom in St. Louis that featured Bix. They played together in Jean Goldkette's Orchestra and made many highly influential recordings together. They both joined Adrian Rollini's short lived band and then joined the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in 1927. Trumbauer stayed with Whiteman until 1932, when he left to form his own band. He then rejoined Whiteman in 1933. In the mid-30's he played with Charlie and Jack Teagarden and then led his own band in California. During World War II he left the music business, but after the war he played in the NBC Orchestra. This great record was made for Odeon on April 3rd, 1928. Vocal by Noel Taylor. Further personnel included: Bix Beiderbecke, cornet; Charles Margulis, trumpet; Bill Rank, trombone; Izzy Friedman, clarinet and alto saxophone; Charles Strickfaden, alto saxophone; Frankie Trumbauer, C-melody saxophone; Min Leibrook, bass saxophone; Lennie Hayton, piano; Matty Malneck, violin; Eddie Lang, guitar; Hal MacDonald, drums. At the Jazz Band Ball - Bix Beiderbecke Here is my first video, At the Jazz Band Ball by Bix Beiderbecke. Composed by LaRocca originally, Bix adds his touch of uniqueness to this rendition. In many ways, Bix Beiderbecke symbolised the Jazz Age. Truly wonderful music, with a truly tragic underside of rotgut and drunkeness. Tags: Jazz Bix Beiderbecke At the jazz band ball |

Singin' the Blues Beiderbecke 1927 Singin' the Blues Beiderbecke 1927 There is a good chance that in 1927 Bix Beiderbecke played this solo of Singing the Blues on his Conn Victor cornet. Many jazz musicians like Jimmy McPartland as well as Max Kaminsky ( see Max and his Conn with me in 1978) played that type of cornet as well. I always had the Conn Victor on my wishlist. In 2001 I found a 1923 big bore cornet in mint condition. Serial number 206480, apparently that horn was manufactured in Elkhart, Ind. Both Simon Stribling and I played the horn during the 2002 Victoria Jazz Festival. Now I like to sell this beauty. I'm used to a medium bore instrument and my Bach Stradivarius short model cornet is most comfortable. The horn is almost like new, No dents, no decay, valves are tight and not worn and the satin silver plating is 100%. The horn has a gold wash bell. During obvious restoration the 'automatic A adjuster' was removed and the horn was tuned to Bb. At the time of purchase I learned that this horn was sold by a musician friend from a fellow euphonium player's estate, who had been a long time brass instruments collector. Apparently several of his horns were sold to a museum in the United Kingdom. In this video you see some of the details on the (perfect) condition. If you are interested in a quality horn that is a collector's item as well and realize that this horn is certainly worth more than US$ 600 contact me. Enjoy Bix's solo! p.s I posted this clip last year and September 2007 I found a new owner for this beautiful horn. I actually gave it to Jerome Etcheberry from Paris France when he visited us in Canada . He is a very talented young cornetist and I wish him lots of success!, Tags: jazz classic traditional conn cornet victor bix beiderbecke |

"Since My Best Gal Turned Me Down" by Bix Beiderbecke Bix Beiderbecke and his Gang recorded "Since My Best Girl Turned Me Down" on October 25, 1927 in New York City. The musicians on this record are members of the orchestra that played at the Club New Yorker, which was open only one month. Before that, most of those musicians played in the freshly-disbanded Jean Goldkette Orchestra. Bix's Gang consists of Bix on cornet, Bill Rank on trombone, Bill Murray on clariney, Adrian Rollini on bass sax, Frank Signorelli on piano, and Chauncey Morehouse on drums. This record is a reissue of the performance, which was originally released on the OKeh label The record player is an Orthophonic Victrola model VE4-4X, or "Granada". The "E" in the model number indicates that the Victrola is fitted with a synchronous A/C motor instead of a wind-up motor. The machine has a full "orthophonic" playback system (for electrically-recorded records) including the special orthophonic sound box with a duralumin diaphragm and a folded exponential horn inside of the cabinet. Although the gigantic Credenza Victrola produced deeper bass, the Granada had the most accurate overall frequency response of all the acoustic Orthophonic Victrolas. The serial number indicates that this machine was probably manufactured in 1926. I shoot my video with a Sony Digital 8 format camera. For audio, I use a Shure SM-57 microphone on a stand placed about 4 feet in front of the Victrola horn. Although I normally use "soft tone" needles, this video was made with a "bright" or "loud" tone needle. The mic is plugged directly into the video camera. The videos are edited with Windows Movie Maker. I use Sound Forge 9 to clean up the audio, but don't worry -- you're hearing the record exactly as the Victrola plays it!
