Ratanakiri - A Journey Home Part 1 Thao and Phat traveled to the most northeastern part of Cambodia called Ratanakiri, Province. Here is where their journey will begin as they meet their long lost relatives (nieces & nephews) for the first time. They flew into Phnom Penh, stayed two nights in the capital city to discuss and evaluate their options. Early on the third day we took off on our journey overland via Ronalds' Toyota Camry. This slide show captures the adventure and drama of their quest to find their nieces and nephews in Ratanakiri Province of Northeastern Cambodia, near the border of Lao and Vietnam in a small town called Banlung. After meeting and getting acquainted with their relatives, Thao and Phat takes two of their nephews with them to visit Siem Reap and explore the ruins of Angkor Wat and other temple complexes. Nakhon Phanom, Thailand - A Second Glance December 2004 - My return trip to Nakhom Phanom, I walked around the small sleepy town on the bank of the Mekong River. Across the Mekong is the town of Takeg in Laos. I took out several of the Riverview Hotel front desk personnel for lunch and a cruise on the Mekong. A quiet, peaceful and relaxing place. Luang Prabang, Laos January 2008 My first trip to the sleepy town of Luang Prabang and Kuansi Waterfall just outside the city limit. One of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen. It is much better in person. I miss sitting in a cafe along the bank of the Mekong River doing nothing but enjoying the view and some good lao food (papaya salad, grilled chicken, sticky rice, desserts, larb, noodle soup). Songkran Thai New Year - April 2005 part 1 I headed north to Chiang Mai from Bangkok via the over night train (sleeper) to experience Songkran (Thai New Year celebration). I had a blast! Afterward, I hopped on the 10 hour bus ride back to Bangkok to catch another bus to Trat (4 hour), and then make a connection via ferry to Koh Chang or Elephant Island (30 minutes). Koh Chang is very peaceful and green. I explored the island by moped. Chiang Mai - Tour of the Country side June 2003 - We checked out the elephant camp and rode an elephant across a river, up a mountain and trekked through the rainforest before emerging again at the elephant training camp. Afterwards, we rode an ox cart and rafted down the river on a flimsy bamboo raft. The scenery was surreal. We then toured a hand craft factory, a paper umbrella plant, an orchid farm. Last but not least, we enjoyed the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar (night market) - the largest night market in Thailand. Jole Chnam (Khmer New Year) - April 2002 part 1 My second trip back to Cambodia was two weeks after I returned from the first trip. This trip coincided with the Khmer New Year (jole chnam) celebration. The festivities started in Siem Reap to Somrong to Osmach and even crossed over into Thailand at the border market and back to Somrong. Khmer new year celebration consist of splashing water and rubbing white baby powder on one another.
