The Bio-Diesel Initiative - Pedal Station Orientation In this LOST themed orientation video, Dr. Melvin Handlebar introduces the Pedal Station. One bicycle powered pump which introduces, circulates and empties the used fry oil mix in a biodiesel processor. Another bicycle powers a generator which charges a bank of 4-Trojan T-105 6V, 225Ah batteries. The batteries are connected to a 115 V AC, 2500 Watt inverter which runs the heater in the processor. Algae could be grown on giant barges, floating on the ocean. Elephant grass is also a great source for biofuel; in fact it may be a richer producing source for biofuel than hemp. Ethanol is NOT the way to go, because it is mixed with petroleum fuel, which we must stop using as soon as possible, to reduce global warming. Instead of drilling for rare fossil fuel, the petroleum companies could switch over, grow algae on huge barges on the ocean and convert to fuel. Let's grow algae local to the fuel use, so it does not need to be transported internationally, and spilled into the ocean. Cities can grow algae in their city waste water systems. We need to convert to carbon-neutral biodiesel / biofuels as soon as possible. We need to use cleaner fuels to make a healthier environment. Investigaciones y análisis realizados por ecologistas y sociólogos exponen que la industria de los biocombustibles a gran escala será desastrosa para los agricultores, el medio ambiente, la preservación de la biodiversidad y los consumidores con menos recursos. La conversión de cereales en combustibles: bioetanol y biodiésel, desplazará a miles de agricultores; disminuirá la seguridad alimenticia de muchos países, al contar con menos reserva de alimentos; acelerará la deforestación, por la tala de bosques; e incrementará la erosión de los suelos. Tal y como pronostican los expertos, y ya va siendo realidad, la creciente demanda por el bioetanol derivado del maíz y el biodiesel del aceite de soja harán subir los precios de los granos y otros alimentos, como el trigo y el arroz, y ejercerán presiones al alza de los precios de la carne, la leche, y las aves de corral, al aumentar los costos de la cría de animales cuya dieta incluyen esos alimentos. El incremento de la demanda de un combustible sustituto para los automóviles determinará, si no se utilizan otras alternativas, una mayor conversión de alimentos, como los cereales, en biocombustibles. Y lo que antes iba a parar a los estómagos de personas, entonces llenará los tanques de los vehículos de los más pudientes. Todo esto ha sido denunciado con mucho argumento por Fidel Castro, como una amenaza de hambruna real para los más pobres, sin dudas un hecho grave, criterio que poco a poco han ido asumiendo otras personalidades, como el relator especial de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación, Jean Ziegler, quien advirtió, recientemente, que producir etanol a partir de alimentos, condenaría a la muerte por hambre a cientos de miles de personas en el planeta.
