Singin The Blues - Bix Beiderbecke The Frankie "Tram" Trumbauer Orchestra feat. Bix Beiderbecke - Singin' the Blues. The first minute of the song is a sax solo by Trumbauer. The second minute is Bix's cornet solo. The third minute features a short clarinet solo by Jimmy Dorsey, who was the clarinetist in Trumbauer's Orchestra at that time. The guitarist on this track is Eddie Lang. This song is considered a jazz classic because Bix and, to a lesser degree, Tram were able to make a slow-tempo jazz ballad swing. This ability to make slow-tempo swinging jazz would later be emulated by jazz musicians ranging from Lester Young to John Coltrane to Miles Davis. BIX BIX is a matrix of 930 fluorescent lamps integrated into the eastern Plexiglas facade of the Kunsthaus. Through the possibility to individually adjust the lamps' brightness at an infinite variability with 20 frames/second images, films and animations can be displayed. The BIX concept was initiated and developed by realities:united. Coming from an outside office this additional architectural concept had to be merged short term into the ongoing planning work. This integration process was challenging for a diversity of reasons: after all BIX was a new element designed to entirely dominate the main facade of the Kunsthaus thereby radically redefining the architectural concept of the building's skin. The BIX media installation and the Kunsthaus' architecture share a strong symbiotic relationship. The facade as a display extends the communication range of the Kunsthaus, complementing its programmatically formulated communicative purpose.In an abstract and mediated form the media facade transmits the internal processes of the Kunsthaus out into the public. For the development of BIX central design features of conventional large screen displays had been abandoned in order to obtain a number of substantial advantages in exchange. On the one hand, the low image resolution imposes strong limitations. On the other hand, this "deal" enables both the modular structure and the huge size of the installation to be highly integrated into the architecture, covering practically the entire facade facing the riverside. Not a separately mounted video wall but the Kunsthaus itself radiates characters and images; thereby a maximum degree of integrity between building and image is achieved. BIX is an experimental laboratory. As the content producer the Kunsthaus has the chance to develop methods for a dynamic communication between building and surroundings, between content and outside perception. Royal Garden Blues -- Bix Beiderbecke 1927 Royal Garden Blues -- Bix Beiderbecke 1927 On October 5 1927 Bix Beiderbecke recorded one of the most important jazz recordings in its history. Royal Garden Blues with his New Orleans Lucky Seven sometimes known as his Gang. Bix had some superb musicians in his band: Bill Rank on trombone, Don Murray on clarinet, Adrian Rollini on bass sax, Frank Signorelli on piano and Chauncey Moorehouse on drums. Through the decades this recording has been a sample of how jazz can be played and has influenced many of the great white jazz musicians like Bobby Hackett, Jimmy McPartland soon after and today more the likes of Tom Pletcher, Bent Persson and certainly Hans Carling and his New Coling Orchestra. Bix Beiderbecke - I Don't Mind Walking In The Rain Since it's pouring down outside and since we are celebrating Bix Beiderbecke's birthday tomorrow, I thought it was an appropriate moment for this song, of which the complete title is "I Don't Mind Walking In The Rain (When I'm Walking In The Rain With You). This is one of Bix's last recordings, displaying a superb blend of hot instrumental solos and a delicate, romantic vocal. Bix Beiderbecke was one of the great jazz musicians of the 20's; he was also a child of the Jazz Age who died very young due to alcohol abuse. In 1923 Beiderbecke joined the Wolverine Orchestra and recorded with them the following year. Bix was influenced by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, but soon surpassed their playing. In late 1924 Bix left the Wolverines to join Jean Goldkette's Orchestra, but his inability to read music eventually made him lose the job. In 1926 he worked with Frankie Trumbauer's Orchestra. He rejoined Jean Goldkette's Orchestra briefly, before signing up as a soloist with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra. Nevertheless, In 1929 Bix's drinking began to catch up with him. He suffered from delirium tremens and he had a nervous breakdown while playing with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. Whiteman was very kind to Bix, keeping him on full pay long after his breakdown, and promised him that his chair was always open in the Whiteman Orchestra, but, Bix was never the same again, and never rejoined the band. He returned to New York in 1930 and made a few more records with his friend Hoagy Carmichael and under the name of Bix Beiderbecke and his Orchestra. The piece presented here belongs to that recording session on September 8th, 1930 for Victor. Vocal by Wes Vaughan; Joe Venuti directed the band and played the violin; further personnel included, besides Bix Beiderbecke on cornet, Irving Brodsky, piano; Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, clarinet and alto saxophone; Tommy Dorsey, trombone; Bud Freeman, tenor saxophone; Gene Krupa, drums; Eddie Lang, guitar; Min Leibrook, bass saxophone, as well as Ray Lodwig, trumpet. It should be noted that I found no picture of Bix's own orchestra; the photograph featured in the video was taken when he played with the Wolverines.
