Channel 4's Big Art Project is the most ambitious national art commissioning programme ever undertaken. In October 2005, Channel 4 asked the nation to get involved in the Big Art Project. Your response has been overwhelming. Over 1,400 members of the public across the UK said they wanted some art for their communities. Since then, our team of selection researchers has been tackling the huge task of working out which of those sites are viable to go forward. It's been heartbreaking because we could choose only six very different sites. Our selection was based on a list of practical criteria, including: Our selection was based on a list of practical criteria, including: planning and political support aesthetic potential funding availability the range of art that might be possible enthusiasm and flexibility of the nominating community achievability within the two-year time frame. The Big Art Project selection team were: Isabel Vasseur, a pioneer of the Public Arts movement Peter Jenkinson, founding director of Walsall Art Gallery Gus Casely Hayford, director of inIVA (Institute of International Visual Arts) Kevin Murray, a planning and regeneration consultant. Together, they have travelled the country meeting nominators, funders, politicians, public authorities and landowners to make their selection. The Channel 4 Big Art Project is produced with the support of Creative Partnerships Site nominations for the Big Art Project have flooded in from all over the UK and our selection panelists have visited the 12 shortlisted sites, knocking on doors, talking to local people and getting a feel of each area and the possibilities that each presents. After this exciting and enjoyable process came the difficult decision of selecting the final 6 sites, all of which had to satisfy the project's criteria. Six communities have been chosen to work with artists and curators to create their own public art commission. From April 2006 to autumn 2007, nominators and curators will work together to: create a brief for their site meet artists experience art raise funds persuade their extended community. Later in the year they will commission an artist. The selection has been very difficult. So many of the nominated sites could have been taken forward, but we had to choose only six.
