Australian Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham is headed to the Beijing Olympics competing in the 10-metre platform and 3-metre springboard events. Matthew is thought to be the first openly gay Australian athlete to attend the Olympics. Go Matthew! US swimmer, Ryan Lochte, who specializes in the backstroke and indiviual medley is an Olympic winner and multiple world record holder. Both he and Michael Phelps broke records again this past June in the Olympic trials. Ryan turned 24 this past August 4th. I have always been a fan of Scottish swimmer Gregor Tait. Best known for the backstroke, Gregor is a favorite in the upcoming Olympics. GOLD MEDAL CONTENDERS 2 Attention à Alexandre Despatie One of my favorite blogs, A Cause des Garçons, posted today about the cover story on diver Alexandre Despatie in the Québecois magazine, L'Actualité. (Both publications are in French, so keep Google Translate at hand if you don't speak the langauge.) Calling Despatie 'Enemy Number One of the Chinese [Divers]' ('L'ennemi numéro un des Chinois'), the magazine wonders if the 23-year-old Despatie can stop the powerful Chinese Olympic diving team now that he has recovered from a fractured foot. "I want to win more than others," he told the magazine recently, while still on crutches at the Montreal FINA diving Grand Prix in May. "I will be probably more concentrated than if I had not had this injury." Towleroad also has some good coverage of Despatie and the L'Actualité article. Photos of Despatie are everywhere on the Internet. If the subject is diving, you can almost guarantee a photo of him will be included. Images of him have become famous, iconographic. Here are a few of my faves from my collection of him. ----------0----------- Andy Grant, born February 3, 1985, in Walnut Creek, California, is an American swimmer. Grant is a graduate of Livermore High School in Livermore, CA, where he was a four-year letterwinner in both swimming and water polo. Now, a college student majoring in Computer Science at Stanford University. In 2003-04 Season (Freshman), Grant took seventh in the 1650 free at the Pac-10 Championships, touching the wall in a season-best 15:23.37. He finished 10th overall at Pac-10s (second in the consolation final) in the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:23.69. In 2004-05 Season (Sophomore), Grant set the school record at the NCAA's with a time of 1:33.97 in the 200 yard freestyle (third place) at the NCAA Championship. He was crowned the Pac-10 champion in the 200 free (1:34.38). His time of 4:17.28 in the 500 yard freestyle at the Pac-10 Championship is a career-best and sixth-best in school history . In 2005-06 Season (Junior), Grant gained All-American honors at the NCAA Championship in the 200 free and 200 back, and also as a member of the 400 free relay . At the Pac-10 Championship, he played a major role in securing Stanford's 25th league title as he anchored the second place 400 free relay, finished third in the 200 free, ran the second leg on the third place 800 free relay and placed fifth in the 200 back . -----0-------------- When swimming, Alexander Popov looks so at ease that it is hard to imagine his natural habitat is not water. His style, and above all, his unerring ability, have given the Russian sprinter unprecedented results in the shape of the Olympic "double-double" in the 50 metres and 100m. He even had his sights on a rare treble at Sydney 2000 but had to settle for silver in the 100m freestyle behind Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband, while he was a distant sixth in the 50m race. Adding a third 100m world gold to his collection and reclaiming his world 50m gold at Barcelona 2003, Popov also captured his first gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay. Born in 1971 close to the Ural mountains, Popov got his first taste of the water in Volgograd, the city where his parents both worked. His swimming exploits began in the backstroke event, but with the Soviet Union looking to put an end to American domination in the freestyle sprints, Popov was offered the chance to train with reputed coach Gennadi Touretski. Popov also won two silver medals in the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley under the banner of the Community of Independent States in 1992. An interesting Olympic anecdote: his results at Atlanta 1996 would turn out to be exactly the same as those achieved in the previous Olympiad. However Popov was attacked while out and about in Moscow with his wife, swimmer Darya Chmeliova, and some friends, and spent next two weeks in hospital, losing seven kilos.
