Crystal Silence on new Yamaha CP300 Crystal Silence on new Yamaha CP300 I bought a Yamaha CP300 which arrived yesterday. This post was done as a first take within the first few hours of receiving it. Needless to say, I am excited about getting a new board. I haven't had time to explore it yet or even read the manual. I hope to make use of the on board sequencer and customize the voices a bit. This is the stock Grand Piano 1 with the touch response set to medium. I thought it might be interesting to revisit Crystal Silence, since this crisp Yamaha patch reminds me of the Chick Corea sound. I haven't played this tune since I last posted it to YouTube months ago. This version sounds different for several reasons. I was in a different frame of mind, and I was playing an acoustic piano on the first post. I think the biggest factor is that I haven't played this tune in a long time. It's a little strange, but if I don't play a piece for a long time, when I do play it, it usually comes out differently. If I play a piece frequently, the versions all start sounding too similar. I don't know if that happens with other musicians as well. Sorry for the length of it, I got a little carried away. I Loves You Porgy This song is a real pleasure to play. The natural flow of the piece is very melancholy and inwardly directed. Bill Evan's version is a stand out. Nina Simone gives an amazing, haunting vocal rendering of this tune. If I were to be self critical of my playing on this piece, I think I overly relied on runs. I come close to derailing the melancholy mood with too much movement. If I do it again, I think I will focus on a more economical use of notes and pare it down a bit. I used Ivory Steinway patch and Yamaha CP300 as the keyboard controller. Skylark (revisited) I took another look at Skylark. It is such a wonderful tune to improvise on. It has a lot of emotional resonance already built into the structure of the song. This version is very similar to the first post of Skylark, except on the Yamaha CP300. I think I settled down and played fewer notes on this one. Again, I am pushing the reharmonizations - mainly by using chord substitutions but keeping the voicings of the chords fairly simple. I really do love to play this tune.
