H.A.F Canadair CL-415 Tribute (R.I.P BROTHERS) On 23/07/2007 Flight Lieutenant Dimitris Stoilidis, 34, and Flying Officer Yiannis Hatzoudis, 27, were killed when their airplane came down in the area of Styra, southern Evia. Stoilidis was a married father of two twin boys. Hatzoudis was single.Flags will be raised as a tribute to the heroic pilots.R.I.P Brothers we'll miss you all.Dimitris Stoilidis made this video during his service with 112sqn.The Hellenic Air Force or HAF (Greek: Πολεμική Αεροπορία) is the air force of Greece. Its mission is to guard and protect the Greek airspace, provide air assistance and support to the Hellenic Army and the Hellenic Navy as well as humanitarian aid (upon request) in Greece and around the world In 1911 the Greek Government appointed French specialists to form the Hellenic Aviation Service. Six Greek officers were sent to France for training, while the first four "Farman" type aircraft were ordered. The first Greek aviator was Emmanuel Argyropoulos, who flew in a Nieuport IV.G "Alcuin" fighter, on February 8, 1912. The first military flight was made on 13 May of that year by Lieutenant Demetrios Kamberos. In June, Kamberos, flew with the "Daedalus", a Farman Aviation Works aircraft that had been converted into a seaplane, setting the foundations of the Naval Aviation. That September, the Greek Army fielded its first squadron, the Aviators Company (Λόχος Αεροπόρων).The Hellenic Air Force participated in the Balkan Wars, World War I, the Asia Minor Campaign, and World War II. Initially it consisted of the separate Army Aviation and Naval Aviation, but in 1930 the Aviation Ministry was founded, establishing the Air Force as the third branch of the Hellenic Armed ForcesToday, the Hellenic Air Force has a total fighter fleet of 275 modern, upgraded or under upgrade aircraft and are due to retirement of some fighter units that have ended their circle of operation,HAF is looking forward to acquiring new 3rd and 4th generation fighters in order to reach a total number of 300 modern fighters, according to the "2007 Supreme Air Force Council Momentum" published earlier this year. Such goal is to be gradually reached until 2015. Prime candidates for a 4th generation aircraft, of which acquisition is considered certain, are the Eurofighter Typhoon, F-35 Lightning II (JSF) and Dassault Rafale..The Bombardier (formerly Canadair) CL-415 (Superscooper) is a Canadian amphibious aircraft purpose-built as a water bomber. It is the only aircraft designed and built specifically for fire fighting and is based on the company's CL-215. The 415 can scoop up to 6 140 litres (1350 Can gal or 1620 US gal) of water from a nearby water source, mix it with foam suppressant if desired and drop it on a fire without having to return to base to refill its tanks. The 415 was specifically developed to provide the capability to deliver massive quantities of suppressant to a fire in its initial stages, preventing it from getting out of control. The 415 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123AF turboprops replacing the 215's piston engines. The 415 has an updated cockpit, as well. It first flew in December of 1993 and the first deliveries were in November of 1994.The CL-415 design originates in a requirement for a firefighting amphibious flying boat to detect and suppress forest fires. The aircraft is built for reliability and longevity, with use of corrosion-resistant materials. Water loads are drawn in and can be mixed internally with fire reardants; speed is essential and missions can take as little as 10 minutes. The Bombardier 415 multi-role is available for use in a paramilitary search and rescue role and utility transport. H.A.F. CL-215 Canadair http://www.aviationlive.org Online Aviation Pics,Videos and Forum Its main mission is firefighting , but it is also used in Search and Resque operations. It has the capacity to take 5000 liters of water in 12 seconds. It wears yellow and red paint scheme. The Canadian Canadair CL-215 ("Scooper") was the first model in a series of firefighting aircraft built by Canadair and later Bombardier. The CL-215 is a twin-engine, wing-over amphibious aircraft designed with the requirements that it operate well at low speed and in gust-loading circumstances, as are found over forest fires. It is also able to land and take off from short, unpaved airstrips. Arising from an earlier 1960s research study at the company, the original concept was for a twin-engined floatplane transport, that was altered into a "firefighter" as a result of a request by forestry officials in the Quebec Service Aérien (Quebec Government Air Service) for a more effective way of delivering water to forest fires. The preliminary design, the CL-204 was a purpose-designed water bomber that evolved into an amphibian configuration, powered by two 2,100 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines shoulder-mounted. The definitive design known as the CL-215 received a program go-ahead in February 1966 with its maiden flight on 23 October 1967. The first delivery was to the French civil protection agency in June 1969. Production of CL-215s progressed through 5 series ending in 1990. The CL-215 is known by several nicknames depending on where they are used. In France they are known as the "Canadairs." In western Canada they are known as "Ducks." Most other operators prefer to go by "Scoopers." The turboprop versions, CL-215T and 415 are known as "Super Scoopers" because of their increased performance. The aircraft can skim lakes, rivers, reservoirs, or open water to fill its tanks. The water can be mixed with additives for direct attack of wildfires and structure protection. The aircraft has a 1,400 US gal (or 12,000 lb.) fluid capacity, and can refill its tank in ten seconds at 75-80 knots. With water sources close to fires, CL-215s have delivered 75-125 loads of water in a single day in support fire fighting efforts. The CL-215 is a versatile aircraft capable of several configurations such as maritime patrol / search and rescue, air transport, and cargo, in addition to its primary role as a water bomber. CL-215s have been involved in 26 accidents, 21 fatal. In 1987, the CL-215T was announced, with improvements in handling brought about by design changes to the wings and empennage, and more powerful Pratt and Whitney turboprop engines. Originally the follow-up CL-215T was to be a simple turboprop-powered development of the CL-215, and Canadair converted two aircraft in 1989 to act as development aircraft. The first of these flew on 8 June 1989. Retrofit kits for CL-215s to the new standard are offered, but Canadair elected not to build new CL-215Ts and instead developed the CL-415. In February 2006, Bombardier announced that they would again offer turbine conversion kits for operators of the series 5 CL-215. In 1972, U.S. Congressman Barry Goldwater, Jr. lead an effort in Congress to have the CL-215 built in the United States in the old Convair Aviation facility in San Diego. The plane was flown to Washington, D.C. that year for a demonstration of its performance to the House Agriculture Committee. The plane scooped and then dropped water on the Anacostia River near the Washington Navy Yard. The goal was to have the U.S. government build the planes to be deployed throughout the country. Unfortunately, opposition from some in the Los Angeles County Fire Department helped sink the plan. It took nearly 30 years since Goldwater first moved to get the planes deployed in the United States for federal, state, and local agencies to use them. Pilio Greece fires 2007 impressive Canadair formation Was just filming some beach scenery in Pilio when I saw a Canadair firefighting aircraft coming down for water. I went up the mountain to investigate and witnessed the impressive sight of SIX Canadair flying in formation to put out a forest fire. These guys are pretty brave. They put out the fire that day but unfortunately you can see that a lot of the mountain was already burnt from previous fires that summer. 2007 has been one of the worse on record for fires in Greece.
