Art of Asia: Ceramics - Innovations in Clay Ceramic production in Asia dates back many thousands of years. The Chinese have always been regarded as the undisputed masters of ceramics. Other Asian cultures have made astonishing contributions as well. The collection at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts sheds light on virtually every type of Asian ceramic—from Neolithic vessels, to Japanese tea bowls, to Chinese export porcelain, and beyond. This teacher resource video was produced in 2006 in conjunction with the Art of Asia interactive media program at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. http://www.artsmia.org/art-of-asia/ Tags: asia art ceramics china japan korea porcelain tea bowls sung minneapolis institute |

The future of materials: Advanced Ceramics Google Tech Talks March, 7 2008 ABSTRACT The world has evolved a long way from the Stone Age to the Iron age, and we are now in the new age of engineered materials. Today's discussion will focus in the realm of advanced ceramics, materials that aren't typically found in nature and can withstand extreme conditions. These materials are being used to stop bullets, enable diesel engines to run more efficiently, produce solar cells, and much more. We will focus on Boron Carbide, Silicon Nitride, Silicon Carbide and a few other materials, where you will learn about how they came to be, how they are made, and where they are used. Speaker: Peter Goldstein Peter has been fascinated with the world around him and always wanted to develop new materials since he was a child. He earned B.S and M.S. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida, focusing on ceramic materials. He is currently employed at Ceradyne, Inc. a high growth, cutting edge Advanced Technical Ceramics company as a Sales Engineer. He works on developing new applications with his customers using the materials Ceradyne offers, and as a hobby enjoys making glass sculptures at his home glass-blowing studio which he built. There he gets to make new creations beyond the constraints of the ordinary world by shaping glass with jet-engine like flames. He is also newly married to a wonderful woman, Jessica, and they live happily together in Huntington Beach, CA. Tags: google techtalks techtalk engedu talk talks googletechtalks education |

Ceramics 101 (Attaching stiff clay together) 1. Marked the area needed to be scored 2. Scored all areas that will be touching with a needle tool in cross-hatched pattern. 3. Wet the scored area with a brush(50 part water + 50 part cooking vinegar works really good too) 4. Scratched all the area again to make slip on all the joining area. 5. Attached the pieces, taking care not to trap any air in the joints, and put firm pressure, pushing both pieces against one another. 6. use a clay coil to reinforce the joint 7. smooth out the coil to the rest of the pieces. 8. Wrap the whole project in plastic to equalize the moisture of the whole project. More extreme and complicated parts, with thick and thin parts need to be left in the plastic longer to dry gradually and slowly. Depending on the complexity of the project, leave the project wrapped in plastic between one day to a week. 9. After equalizing the moisture of the clay, take it out of the plastic and let it completely dry out before it can be bisqued fired. * Clay are best attached when they are in the leather-hard stage, the clay is stiff but till a little flexible. If the clay already lost it's sheen, then, it is to dry to get a successful attachment. Tags: ceramics joint attach stiff clay technique EpiCai Tjakra Geoffrey caieros |

Ceramics 101 (Attaching stiff clay together Part 2) 1.You can also prepare some slip by drying up the slay you are using, crushed them up with a hammer and mix and stir with water till you get a thick creamy consistency. You can mix alittle of cooking vinegar in the slip too. 2. Scratch the surface to be joined in a cross-hatched pattern. Put some slip or water and scratched again. 3. press together the section that is needed to be joined, taking care not to put any air bubble in-between the joints. 4. Reinforce with a clay coil/snake. 5. test all joints by gently pulling on the parts that are just attached. They should all be nice and strong joints. 6. Wrap the whole project in a plastic bag to equalize the moisture of the clay. Leave it wrapped for 1 day to a week. before letting the project dry slowly and completely to get it ready for bisqued firing. http://www.geoffreytjakra.com Tags: ceramics joint attach stiff clay technique EpiCai Tjakra Geoffrey caieros |
