An Overview of High Performance Computing and Challenges for the Future Google Tech Talks January, 25 2008 ABSTRACT In this talk we examine how high performance computing has changed over the last 10-year and look toward the future in terms of trends. These changes have had and will continue to have a major impact on our software. A new generation of software libraries and algorithms are needed for the effective and reliable use of (wide area) dynamic, distributed and parallel environments. Some of the software and algorithm challenges have already been encountered, such as management of communication and memory hierarchies through a combination of compile--time and run--time techniques, but the increased scale of computation, depth of memory hierarchies, range of latencies, and increased run--time environment variability will make these problems much harder. We will focus on the redesign of software to fit multicore architectures. Speaker: Jack Dongarra University of Tennessee Oak Ridge National Laboratory University of Manchester Jack Dongarra received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Chicago State University in 1972 and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1973. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of New Mexico in 1980. He worked at the Argonne National Laboratory until 1989, becoming a senior scientist. He now holds an appointment as University Distinguished Professor of Computer Science in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Tennessee, has the position of a Distinguished Research Staff member in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Turing Fellow in the Computer Science and Mathematics Schools at the University of Manchester, and an Adjunct Professor in the Computer Science Department at Rice University. He specializes in numerical algorithms in linear algebra, parallel computing, the use of advanced-computer architectures, programming methodology, and tools for parallel computers. His research includes the development, testing and documentation of high quality mathematical software. He has contributed to the design and implementation of the following open source software packages and systems: EISPACK, LINPACK, the BLAS, LAPACK, ScaLAPACK, Netlib, PVM, MPI, NetSolve, Top500, ATLAS, and PAPI. He has published approximately 200 articles, papers, reports and technical memoranda and he is coauthor of several books. He was awarded the IEEE Sid Fernbach Award in 2004 for his contributions in the application of high performance computers using innovative approaches. He is a Fellow of the AAAS, ACM, and the IEEE and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Tags: google techtalks techtalk engedu talk talks googletechtalks education |

Challenges in Causality Google Tech Talks February, 11 2008 ABSTRACT What affects your health, the economy, climate changes? And what actions will have beneficial effects? These are some of the central questions of causal discovery. A "causal model" is a model capable of making predictions under changing circumstances, corresponding to actions of "external agents" on a system of interest. For example, a doctor administering a drug to a patient, a government enforcing a new tax law or a new environmental policy. It is often necessary to assess the benefits and risks of potential actions using available past data and excluding the possibility of experimenting. Experiments, which are the ultimate way of verifying causal relationships, are in many cases too costly, infeasible, or unethical. For instance, enforcing a law prohibiting to smoke in public places is costly, preventing people from smoking may be infeasible, and forcing them to smoke would be unethical. In contrast, "observational data" are available in abundance in many applications. Recently, methods to devise causal models from observational data have been proposed. Can causal models thus obtained be relied upon to make important decisions? In this presentation, we will challenge the hopes an promises of causal discovery and present new means of assessing the validity of causal modeling techniques. Want to play? Check the "causation and prediction" competition presently going on: http://www.causality.inf.ethz.ch/challenge.php Deadline April 30, 2008 Speaker: Isabelle Guyon Isabelle Guyon is a researcher in machine learning and an independent consultant. Prior to starting her consulting practice in 1996, she worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where she pioneered applications of neural networks to pen computer interfaces and invented Support Vector Machines (in collaboration with B. Boser and V. Vapnik). Isabelle Guyon holds a Ph.D. degree in Physical Sciences of the University Pierre and Marie Curie of Paris, France. She is vice-president of the Unipen foundation, action editor of the Journal of Machine Learning Research, and competition chair of the IJCNN conference. Michigan set to combat voter challenges - 28 Oct 08 There is concern in Michigan at the number of votes that may be challenged on election day. The state has had the highest unemployment rate in the US for three years running. Many residents are in financial trouble and have had their homes foreclosed on. Because voter registration is based on where you live, if your home has been seized by the bank, political parties can challenge your ballot. Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher reports. Taiwan's National Health Insurance: Successes and Challenges Dr. Jason Wang, MD (of the Pardee RAND Graduate School and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA) speaks of the challenges faced by Taiwan's national health insurance system as well as its successes. A major success of the system is that it is very nearly universal. Everyone has access to medical services. And Taiwanese take advantage of this access by, on aggregate, visiting the doctor much more frequently than do patients in the United States. But each doctor visit in Taiwan is extremely short: on the order to 2 to 5 minutes per patient per visit. [2/2005] [Health and Medicine] [Show ID: 9068] Tags: health insurance Taiwan care |

Iron Sheik Challenges Ultimate Warrior This happened 5/6/07 at a New Jersey sports show. When I was in line to meet the Warrior, the Sheik approached him and tried to shake his hand. The Warrior refused and said, "I'm not shaking a hypocrite's hand. You went around telling people I was on drugs. Get out of my face". At this point, I pulled my trusty digital camera out of my pocket and filmed the encounter starting at that point. The Sheik goes nuts, even decking one of the promoters! I heard that Sheik attacked him again as he was attempting to hide behind a table. Security tried to confiscate my camera as I was leaving, but I headed out the door before the police came.
