Bob Kuban - The Cheater This artist hit it big exactly once, with the Top Ten hit "The Cheater," released in 1966 under the name of Bob Kuban & the In-Men. His music was influenced by his sideman association with Ike and Tina Turner, including several stints with Ike's Kings of Rhythm band. In 1976, he opened his own booking agency and his venture payed off, even leading to public recognition such as the St. Louis Businessman of the Year award. One of his innovations was the so-called Singles Night Out series of singles dances. He also started his own publishing company, Q-Man Music. His success in these music business endeavors have left him in a different position than many other '60s hit artists who never recovered from getting "ripped off" for their royalties. He always left some time for music, continuing to book his own combo as well as fronting the Bob Kuban Brass Band. Thirty years after his one Top Ten hit, he was honored at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's tribute to "One Hit Wonders," because without him it could never have been complete. Unfortunately, Kuban's singer on this hit single, Walter Scott, was not around to enjoy the award. He was the victim of a grisly murder in 1983, the details of which were apparently fascinating enough to inspire a book, The Cheaters: The Walter Scott Murder by Scottie Priesmeyer. Although he vanished in 1983, the singer's body was not found until 1987, floating in a cistern with a gunshot wound to the back. His widow and her new husband were charged with the murder, and that is quite ironic considering the words of the biggest hit Scott had ever sung: "Look out for the cheater..." Scott and Kuban's relationship went back to 1963, when the latter was a high school teacher who played drums on weekend wedding gigs, with Scott singing for a group called the Pacemakers. The two men formed a new band that almost immediately began cutting sides for the Norman label, but not with any great success, although the song "Jerkin' Time" would make a great theme song for a Jamaican jerked chicken chain. "The Cheater" was originally released by the Musicland label, for whom Kuban cut two further singles, "Harlem Shuffle" and "The Batman Theme." In 1970, Kuban cut a single for Reprise and re-did his one-hit for other labels in both 1974 and 1975. In 1975, the Bob Kuban Brass Band recorded Get Ready for Some Rock and Soul, once again for Norman. The same label was still around in the late '80s to issue two more singles with predictable partying themes, "Everybody's Gonna Have a Party" and "Triple Shot of Rhythm and Blues." In 2000, Kuban began playing drums in the band of another St. Louis rock & roll legend, but one with decidely more than one hit to his credit: guitarist Chuck Berry. Cheater Montage UPDATE: 08/24/06 - I guess it's all screwed up again... lame... oh well.. I don't care as much as I used to.. all the spamming, system abuse and lack of response/help has led me away from youtube... anyway... yup... it's a problem again.. oh well... UPDATE: 04/28/06 - We won! I thought about making another movie.. but screw it... anyone who really cares can read this... That's right.. WE WON... I've been talking to someone from youtube off and on all day. He told me that once he saw my videos he added a couple of my requests to the current development cycle. So... in "less than a few weeks and maybe sooner" a new release of the youtube software will be published that limits every user to one vote per video and doesn't allow videos on Top Rated that have their ratings turned off... My biggest hope was an email that said "yeah we know, we're working on it.".. but instead I had several email exchanges and was told that my videos actually brought some of this to their attention and moved it up on the priority list... A bunch of people told me i was wasting my time... but they were wrong.. I put a little bit of effort into something I believed would make this place better and it paid off... So all you cheaters enjoy your 15 minutes because they're almost up... Especially TheNarutoPianist, darren523, ghosty1, barsandstars220, bigsocce, GaFaMM... you guys suck huge stinky ass. Some amount of thanks to Usocce, BYC, dennisgaughan who all turned their ratings back on "voluntarily" after various amounts of pestering... A huge thanks to all the people who helped pester the cheaters, emailed youtube, or just offered up some support. So... after 26,000+ views, nearly 300 comments (half of which are probably mine), 60 or so private messages... it's over and I can go back to making movies for fun under my real youtube account... I'm turning ratings back on for this video now... thanks! If this doesn't make sense to you, watch my other video. I cheated to get this video on the front page... I'm admitting to cheating here because I'm just trying to get the message out and maybe get some response from youtube... are they aware of the problem? is it going to be fixed? no, I don't think this video deserves to be on the front page... unlike most of the cheaters, I don't think I'm special.. I don't think I'm better than everyone... and I care about getting quality videos the attention they deserve not shamelessly promoting my own half assed mediocre video. just to clarify because some people still don't get it... I'm not passing judgement on anyones content... I have opinions about it, but that's not what's important... what's "important" is that these people are abusing the system in order to get views/comments/traffic for their videos that they didn't earn by making a good video... all they did was exploit youtube.. If the entire top 20 was anime videos and bad lip syncing... I wouldn't care as long as all 20 had ratings turned on and had gotten there honestly... I think the vast majority of people here understand this... How youtube can fix the current problems: 1) Only show videos with ratings turned ON in the Top Rated area. 2) One rating vote per user per video. 3) Put a short time limit between video comments. 4) One "flag" operation per user per video. 5) Find some way to limit the number of "views" one person/computer can give to any video.. that's a hard one and I'm not sure how it can be done. those changes, I think, would make it far too time consuming to attempt to cheat in any meaningful way on a video. BYC turned on the ratings for his hello kitty song shown in this video... thanks BYC. Yes, yes, yes... I know there are bigger issues in the world today... Yes, I know there are people violating copyright laws on youtube... debatably, including this video... that's not what this is about... I just want a fucking bug fix for youtube that stops people from locking down their rating forever... that's all. I've had several emails asking what the song in this video is...
