Hunting for the Kappa Monster in Tokyo, part 1 (BBtv) BBtv online: http://tv.boingboing.net. Oh, man, this is weird. How do we explain this? So, the Boing Boing tv team planned a series of episodes about Japanese monsters for Halloween, and for this purpose, we sent Sean Bonner to Tokyo, armed with a video camera. The plan was: meet up with Matt Alt and Hiroko Yoda, authors of the previously-boinged book Yokai Attack: The Japanese Monster Survival Guide, and hunt down the truth about mythical monstrous creatures from Japanese folklore. We'd planned to start our Japanese monster series with a hunt for the Kappa, a water-dwelling, ninja-turtle-like, child-sized creature who is fond of cucumbers and human colon meat (I'm not making this up). Legend says the Kappa will reach into your butt to eat your colon, which is grosstastically awesome. Anyway -- Sean made it to Tokyo, and shot evidence of the Kappa on Japan's urban streets (signs, blow-up Kappa dolls, stickers). But then, suddenly, the raw footage he was FTPing to us nightly just STOPPED. Bam. Just like that. And with it, all evidence we had of Sean's whereabouts and well-being. Today's BBtv episode is part one of what we hope will be a two-part series on Kappa Hunting in Tokyo. IF HE SURVIVED. Sean, I hope you were armed with cucumbers, because the alternative is too horrible to imagine. New Orleans Schools are in a Fight Against Child ... New Orleans Schools are in a Fight Against Child Obesity And the Ochsner Medical Center Mobile P.E. Class helps combat the issue. It's Back to School time again and more schools are reducing or eliminating physical education programs in lieu of academic curriculum. According to a national survey, nearly 22 percent of Black and Hispanic kids, ages four to 12, are overweight or obese. And, the 2000 census indicated that the New Orleans population is 67 percent African American and has experienced an increase in Hispanics moving to the area. Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans is taking P.E. to schools with its Mobile Fitness Unit called On the Move. Ochsner's Elmwood Fitness Center developed a community outreach program to help fight a growing global epidemic: 32 percent, or nine million American children, are now overweight. On the Move is equipped with child-sized workout equipment, staffed by trainers, a nutritionist, and an Executive Chef, and is provided at no cost to New Orleans-area schools. Hunting for the Kappa Monster in Tokyo, part 2 BBtv online: http://tv.boingboing.net Today on Boing Boing tv we continue a series of transmissions from Tokyo by our monster-hunting comrade Sean Bonner, who vanished mysteriously while seeking a legendary shrine devoted to the Kappa, a water-dwelling, ninja-turtle-like, child-sized creature who is fond of cucumbers and human colon meat, which it may access by grabbing up your butt. In yesterday's installment, Sean hooked up with Matt Alt and Hiroko Yoda, authors of the previosly-boinged book Yokai Attack: The Japanese Monster Survival Guide, and the quest began. But the team vanished mysteriously, and we haven't been able to reach Sean for a week. Today, he reappears, with proof that he has touched the mummified hand of the cucumber-loving amphibious prankster. He also brings us irrefutable proof that some of Japan's greatest manga artists found a source of inspiration in Kappa art. Also on the streets of Tokyo, just outside the shrine, BBtv's yokai squad discovered MONSTER KITTEH. my school! A few observations: -The middle school students, grades 1 through 3 (equivalent to American 7-9th grades), do all of the chores and food preparation. They clean the bathrooms, classrooms, hallways, as well as the teachers' office. -Students are designated to set up station and serve lunch to other students in the hallways. They eat and socialize in classrooms. The administration dines in a lunch room that is separate from where the students are. Teachers and staff members eat the same food as the students, which typically consist of rice, various panchan (side dishes), and soup. Dining at the school has been satisfactory. However, eating lunch from a cold metal plate-tray is strikingly indicative of that other public system, prison. What adds to that is listening to metal spoons and chopsticks scraping and tapping off of these metal plate-trays throughout the entire lunch break. But, leaving the room with energized teachers and a child-sized yogurt drink (equivalent to dessert) softens the blow. - Charades, one word English sentences, and "TASHI HANBON" have been sole methods of communication with these 13-16 year olds. I find myself either laughing or consoling a frustrated student who is failing to communicate with me in Konglish. - 107 is "most famous" in the entire building for being notoriously worst-behaved and uncontrollable. In my modest opinion, they are one of the more amusing classes to teach. - Air conditioners are replaced with fans that are installed at two sides of a classroom. In the middle of a lesson, a sweaty and fed up student will do an Air Jordan and pull the chord to crank the fan to full speed. - I am still unable to figure out which side to face when standing on the floor's toilet. More later! Tags: seoul! |

ROBOVIE helps navigate in a shopping mall - Sexy Robots Videos GO TO http://www.sexy-robots-videos.com for more life-like robots information, videos and photos. The Osaka-based Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (ATR) has developed a crowd-monitoring humanoid robot that recognizes when people are lost and helps them find their way. In a series of demonstrations conducted from January 22 to 24, a souped-up version of ATR's Robovie humanoid robot monitored people as they passed through a 100 square meter (1,076 sq ft) section of the Universal Citywalk Osaka shopping center. Relying on data from 16 cameras, 6 laser range finders and 9 RFID tag readers installed in and around the area, the robot was able to watch up to 20 people at a time, pinpoint their locations to within a few centimeters, and classify each individual's behavior into one of 10 categories (waiting, wandering, walking fast, running, etc.). Robovie -- Whenever Robovie spotted people who looked disoriented, the child-sized droid wheeled up to them and asked, "Are you lost?" If so, the robot provided simple directions to the destination and pointed the way. If not, the robot proceeded to recommend nearby shops and restaurants. ATR says the Robovie test is the first in a long series of robot-related demonstrations to be conducted at Universal Citywalk Osaka. This week, the company announced it was establishing a permanent base in the shopping center, which will serve as a real-world environment for testing new robot-oriented business ideas. In June, the company plans to start hiring out its machines to companies toying with the idea of employing robots. Driving experiences for children in hospitals - Karmavision http://karmavision.tv/video/446/driving_experiences_for_children_in_hospitals.html Hospitals across the United States will soon be adding child-sized, HUMMER battery-operated vehicles to their pediatric units. The vehicles are being donated by HUMMER dealerships under a program called "Courageous Kids." The HUMMERs are used by young patients who may "drive" themselves into surgery or for other medical procedures. The goal of Courageous Kids is to help reduce the anxiety that frightened children often experience when undergoing medical treatment. "We believe this mode of transportation definitely beats a gurney ride and can help take young patients' minds off their fears," said Martin Walsh, HUMMER general manager. To date, hospitals in Michigan, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Washington, and Texas have begun replacing gurney rides with self-driven HUMMER rides in style. Spore - Kappa Spore version of the Japanese water imp. From Wikipedia: "Most depictions show kappa as child-sized humanoids, though their bodies are often more like those of monkeys or frogs than human beings. Some descriptions say their faces are apelike, while others show them with beaked visages more like those of tortoises or with duck beaks. Pictures usually show kappa with thick shells and scaly skin that ranges in color from green to yellow or blue." Tags: spore maxis kappa japan japanese demon imp water |

HENRI de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (24 November 1864 - 9 September 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draftsman, and illustrator, whose immersion in the decadent and theatrical life of fin de siècle Paris yielded an oeuvre of provocative images of modern life. Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec Monfa was born in Albi, Tarn in the Midi-Pyrénées région of France, the firstborn child of Comte Alphonse and Comtesse Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec. An aristocratic family (descendants of the Counts of Toulouse) that had recently fallen on hard times, the Toulouse-Lautrecs were feeling the effects of the inbreeding of past generations; the Comte and Comtesse themselves were first cousins, and Henri suffered from a number of congenital health conditions attributed to this tradition of inbreeding. A younger brother was born to the family on 28 August 1867, but died the following year. At the age of 13 Henri fractured his left thigh bone, and at 14, the right. The breaks did not heal properly. Modern physicians attribute this to an unknown genetic disorder, possibly pycnodysostosis (also sometimes known as Toulouse-Lautrec Syndrome), or a variant disorder along the lines of osteopetrosis, achondroplasia, or osteogenesis imperfecta. Rickets aggravated with praecox virilism has also been suggested. His legs ceased to grow, so that as an adult he was only 1.54 m (5 ft 1 in) tall,[3] having developed an adult-sized torso, while retaining his child-sized legs, which were 0.70 m (27.5 in) long. He is also reported to have had hypertrophied genitals. Physically unable to participate in most of the activities typically enjoyed by men of his age, Toulouse-Lautrec immersed himself in his art. He became an important Post-Impressionist painter, art nouveau illustrator, and lithographer; and recorded in his works many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec also contributed a number of illustrations to the magazine Le Rire during the mid-1890s. Paris Toulouse-Lautrec was drawn to Montmartre, an area of Paris famous for its bohemian lifestyle and for being the haunt of artists, writers, and philosophers. Tucked deep into Montmartre was the garden of Monsieur Pere Foret where Toulouse-Lautrec executed a series of pleasant plein-air paintings of Carmen Gaudin, the same red-head model who appears in The Laundress (1888). When the nearby Moulin Rouge cabaret opened its doors, Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to produce a series of posters. Thereafter, the cabaret reserved a seat for him, and displayed his paintings. Among the well-known works that he painted for the MOULIN ROUGE and other Parisian nightclubs are depictions of the singer Yvette Guilbert; the dancer Louise Weber, known as the outrageous La Goulue ("The Glutton"), who created the "FRENCH CAN-CAN"; and the much more subtle dancer Jane Avril. Toulouse-Lautrec spent much time in brothels, where he was accepted by the prostitutes and madams to such an extent that he often moved in, and lived in a brothel for weeks at a time. He shared the lives of the women who made him their confidant, painting and drawing them at work and at leisure. Lautrec recorded their intimate relationships, which were often lesbian. A favourite model was a red-haired prostitute called Rosa la Rouge from whom he allegedly contracted syphilis. Toulouse-Lautrec gave painting lessons to Suzanne Valadon, one of his models (and possibly his mistress as well). An alcoholic for most of his adult life, Toulouse-Lautrec was placed in a sanatorium shortly before his death. He died from complications due to alcoholism and syphilis at the family estate in Malromé, fewer than three months before his 37th birthday. He is buried in Verdelais, Gironde, a few kilometers from the Château of Malromé, where he died. Toulouse-Lautrec's last words reportedly were: "Le vieux con!" ("Old fool!") Jessie in the Fox Hole My roommate and I went to the Woodland Park Zoo and she decided that she had to get into this child sized fox hole near the Artic Fox exhibit. I told her I'd only stand by and watch her if she let me film it. I wish I had filmed just a little bit longer, because at the end, she stands, she turns to me, and says, very nonchallantly, "Sup?" Some of the people nearby found this quite amusing. And some kids even asked if they could go in there just after. Tags: humor zoo friends |
