Code Monkey You can support Spiffworld by checking out the fantastic leveling guide at www.glutonysguide.com. This guy broke the record for speed-leveling to 70, and his guide can teach you to do it too. This is a music video about the life of the common lowlands code monkey. Jonathan Coulton is a singer/songwriter who releases his songs via the Creative Commons license, which enables projects such as this video. Through his "Thing A Week" podcast, Jonathan has put out a clever, creative song like this one every week for a year. Mike Spiff Booth is a Program Manager at Adobe who though this great song really deserved a video. Before you ask, since apes, goblins, and night elf receptionists don't tend to interact much in the wild, I couldn't only use captured game footage to make this video. Every frame of this video was composited together by hand using images captured from the WoW Model Viewer, WoW Map Viewer, and the World of Warcraft game itself. No monkeys were harmed in the making of this film. Please visit www.spiffworld.com for more information about my videos, including info about how I make them. The song at the end of the video is "Big Bad World One", another great Jonathan Coulton song. Tags: code monkey world of warcraft wow spiffworld jonathan coulton spiff goblin ape night elf molten |

Code Monkey AMV This AMV features the song Code Monkey by Jonathan Coulton, using footage from the anime Black Heaven. It was a finalist at Anime Expo 2007 AMV Contest. At Animazement 2007 it won Best in Show. I've heard it did well at Dragoncon 2007 A lot of people ask where the song is available, you can buy it at Jonathan Coulton's website for 0.99 or from itunes for the same price. Its released under the Creative Commons license, which grants use for projects like this. Thanks Jonathan! Others have asked about the anime, Legend of Black Heaven. This anime is about a man who was in a rock band in his younger days, but they broke up as the members grew up and got married. Years later, in a dead end job and dull marriage, he's approached by aliens who want him to play his music to save them... Tags: Code Monkey AMV Anime Music Video Studio Hybrid |

Code of Conduct Rule #0: Rules #1 and #2 of the internet still apply. Your memes are not, at this juncture, something that the real world can appreciate. Although meme speak between fellow Anonymous is acceptable, focus on the target and keep it to a minimum. Rule #1: Stay cool. Rule #2: Stay cool, especially when harassed. You are an ambassador of Anonymous. Although individuals trying to disrupt your demonstration will get on your nerves, you must not lose your temper. Doing so will harm the protest and tarnish the reputation of Anonymous. Rule #3: Comply with the orders of law enforcement officers above all else. Doing otherwise is harmful to the demonstration as a whole and may compromise your performance as a human being. Do not request badge numbers unless you are being treated in a very abusive manner, as doing so will anger officers. Rule #4: Notify city officials. Most jurisdictions either have rules about public protests, or would prefer to be notified that they are taking place. Know the rules for your jurisdiction and abide by them. Rule #5: Always be across the street from the object being protested. Rule #6: In the absence of a road, find another natural barrier between yourself and the target of protest. Doing so will make it more difficult for individuals hostile to your cause to come and harass you. Rule #7: Stay on public property. You may be charged for trespassing if you do not. Rule #8: No violence. Rule #9: No weapons. The demonstration is a peaceful event. Your weapons. You will not need them. Rule #10: No alcohol or pre-drinking. Violating this rule may easily precipitate a violation of rules 1 and 2. Rule #11: No graffiti, destruction, or vandalism. Rule #12: If you want to do something stupid, pick another day. These should be self explanatory. Violation of these rules during a demonstration will tarnish the reputation of Anonymous, harm the demonstration itself and leave you vulnerable to attention from law enforcement. Rule #13: Anonymous is legion. Never be alone. Isolation during a protest marks you as a target for handlers who wish to provoke an angry reaction from you and other hostiles. In keeping with this principle... Rule #14: Organize in squads of 10 to 15 people. Rule #15: One or two megaphones per squad. A megaphone is helpful for maintaining the overall cohesion of a demonstration and spreading your message. However, too many will confuse the public and render you hearing impaired. Rule #16: Know the dress code. Forming a loose yet reasonable dress code for protest members will help to maintain cohesion and get the public to take you seriously. Rule #17: Cover your face. This will prevent your identification from videos taken by hostiles, other protesters or security. Use scarves, hats and sunglasses. Masks are not necessary, and donning them in the context of a public demonstration is forbidden in some jurisdictions. Rule #18: Bring water. A dehydrated, thirsty Anonymous is not a useful Anonymous. Rule #19: Wear good shoes. Following these rules will assure your comfort during the demonstration. Keep in mind that demonstrations may often be quite lengthy. Rule #20: Signs, fliers, and phrases. Have yours ready. Make sure that signs are large enough to read. Also ensure that the text on your signs and your phrases are pertinent to the target of the protest. Rule #21: Prepare legible, uncomplicated and accurate flyers to hand out to those who wish to know more regarding the motivations behind your actions. Rule #22: Document the demonstration. Videos and pictures of the event may be used to corroborate your side of the story if law enforcement get involved. Furthermore, posting images and videos of your heroic actions all over the internet is bound to generate win, exhorting other Anonymous to follow your glorious example. ------------ Tags: Scientology tom cruise ebaums message to xenu god |

Teaching Kids To Code Google Tech Talks March, 7 2008 ABSTRACT Learning to code has become both more important and more complicated in the last decade. We need to make it attractive and easy again. Most western countries currently experience a shortage of skilled computing professionals in the employment market. We have seen a similar problem in the 1990s, but this time the situation is different: While the problem in the 90s was university capacity (we just couldn't educate enough people quickly enough), this time around it is enrolment: Universities have the capacity, but not enough students sign up to study technical, computing related subjects, such as computer science or software engineering. The real problem lies before university: at school age, students decide against computing as a subject, because it is perceived as geeky, tedious, intellectually not challenging, and most of all boring. At the same time, programming in schools is on a sharp decline. We need to counter this trend by bringing programming back into schools, and make it an engaging, challenging, relevant and enjoyable activity. To be successful, the public sector, academia and business should work together to make this happen. At the University of Kent, we have developed two successful development environments, named BlueJ and Greenfoot, and educational material to address these challenges. In this presentation, we will discuss both, with the main focus on Greenfoot, a system for beginners to learn Java programming through development of interactive graphical applications. Greenfoot and its associated materials can be used to teach programming in schools, computer clubs, or to your own children. Kids develop computer games, and -- almost as an aside -- learn object- oriented programming in Java. In this talk, I will present the software, strategies for learning of programming, and the benefits and drawback of Java as a first language. Speaker: Michael Kölling, Computing Laboratory, University Michael Kölling is the lead designer of the BlueJ and Greenfoot programming environments. Both environments are designed for beginners to learn the basics of Java, and are widely used by schools and universities all over the world. Michael is also the founder of the Sun Center of Excellence in Object-Oriented Education at the University of Kent. He works as a Senior Lecturer in the Computing Laboratory at the University of Kent, where he teaches Java to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and is co-author of a successful Java textbook, "Objects First With Java." Coconut: COde CONstructing User Tool Google Tech Talks March, 7 2008 ABSTRACT Coconut is a developing system for high-assurance, high-performance software. It was used to develop a library of special functions for the Cell BE processor, which is distributed in the Cell BE SDK 3.0 as MASS. Average performance is 4X better than the alternative hand-tuned C library, SimdMath. Coconut has been successful where patterns of efficient hardware-specific computation can be captured as higher-order functions and encoded in a Domain Specific Language embedded in Haskell. Patterns include efficient control structures not expressible in C, e.g., the MultiLoop, and efficient uses of SIMD instructions which require significant compile-time computation for pattern specialization. Some patterns interact with a novel instruction scheduler called Explicitly Staged Software Pipelining, based on a min-cut approach, which outperforms SWING modulo scheduling in our tests. A less developed aspect of Coconut is the parallel production of proofs of correctness along with executables. Current work aims to prove only limited properties about programs---the ones most likely to be broken---creative use of SIMD instructions, and parallelization. Coconut intermediate code is represented as nested code (hyper)graphs. At the lowest level, we transform acyclic loop bodies to remove the effect of SIMDization, and produce machine and/or human readable specifications. This has been used to verify opaque patterns of optimizing linear algebra for SIMD processors. Such code graphs are embedded in higher levels containing control flow, first single-threaded control flow optimized for ILP, and then parallel control-flow, optimized to hide communication latency. At this level control flow is restricted to allow peak utilization of multi-core hardware, but enable efficient compile-time verification of soundness. Soundness, in this context, means that the parallelized program can be transformed into a code graph without synchronizing control flow, because every execution can be shown to produce the same result. Think of it as reducing the parallel debugging effort to the single-threaded debugging problem by eliminating the non-determinism inherent in parallel code. I will give a formal language description of the language, and the O(n) algorithm which proves soundness and produces the equivalent ``single threaded'' code graph. Speaker: Christopher Anand Christopher Anand is a professor of Computing and Software at McMaster University. His main research areas are software correctness, high performance computation, and automatic code generation. He has also founded the company Optimal Computational Algorithms to provide hardware-specific libraries for scientific applications on novel architectures.
