Face-off with a Stealthy Striped Snake Japanese striped snake (Elaphe quadrivirgata, family Colubridae) spotted in the roadside vegetation, perfectly blended in with leaf litters. The snake slowly slithered with its forked tongue flickering and then raised its head. The eyes were distinctively red. Early-September 2008 in Japan.

A roadkilled victim of the Japanese striped snake (Elaphe quadrivirgata, family Colubridae). Recorded in the rainy afternoon of mid-July 2008 in Japan.

COBRA - Northern Water Snake The Northern Water Snake, Nerodia sipedon, is a large, non-venomous, well-known snake in the Colubridae family that is native to North America. They are active during the day and at night. They are most often seen basking on rocks, stumps, or brush. During the day, they hunt among plants at the water's edge, looking for small fish, frogs, worms, leeches, crayfish, salamanders, small birds and mammals. At night, they concentrate on minnows and other small fish sleeping in shallow water. It was once an endangered species but now benefits from the introduction of round goby, an invasive species. Antiguan Racer Feeding on Lizard Status: Critically Endangered Possibly the world's rarest snake, the Antiguan racer is small, non-venomous and good-natured. Unusually amongst snakes, this species shows dramatic sexual dimorphism with the females being much larger in size than the males and possessing almost the opposite colouration; females are a silvery-grey colour with pale brown blotches and stripes, whereas the males are dark brown with creamy blotches. Threats: This snake was once common in Antigua, but by the twentieth century it had completely disappeared from the island and was thought to be extinct. Black and brown rats were accidentally brought to the West Indies on foreign ships from Europe, wreaking havoc on endemic wildlife including the Antiguan racer whose eggs and young were preyed upon. Further details on the Antiguan Racer, along with other photographs and videos, can be found here: http://www.arkive.org/species/GES/reptiles/Alsophis_antiguae/ View more videos, photographs and fact-files of the world's endangered species at http://www.arkive.org, and subscribe to our YouTube channel to help raise awareness of the natural world.
