Mr. Tosaporn Tephabutra, who was appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea in Phuket, pledged that he would carry out the honorable task to his best to bring about closer ties and mutual benefits of both nations. The Korean Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Mr. Han Tae-Kyu, said the appointment of the Honorary Consul in Phuket not only promotes bilateral exchanges in tourism, but also creates opportunities for other trades and investments. At present the republic of Korea has two honorary consuls, one in Chiang Mai and now the new one in Phuket. In the evening, the Korean Embassy to Thailand hosted a show of Korean traditional music and dance. The show, by the National Centre for Korean Traditional Performance Arts, perfectly told the local life style and traditional cultural values of Korea. The event was attended by impressed local residents and Koreans in Phuket. Folk Dance 'Gang-gang-Sullae' is a traditional folk entertainment of Jeolla province which was usually played by women under the full moon. The leader with a good voice sings first, then the others answer together with the words 'Gang-gang-Sullae'. These are Folk Music scenes where a performer plays a musical instrument and sings a chapter in Danga or Pansori by Gayageum. This was developed at the end of 19th century. Today the performances include 'Love Song', My home town with Gourd Flowers and Fisherman Song. Another folk dance is 'Fan Dance' initiated in 1954. The dance displays the beauty of traditional fans through the movements. Now the fan dance became a glorious group of performances representing Korean culture. These folk dances (Thunder of Drums) feature the sound of drums, one of the four musical instruments which are used at Buddhist rituals to serve the spirits of the deceased.
