The Lab With Leo- Episode 1 Passionate communities are often kept an arm's length away from traditional media broadcasts. The future of television is omnidirectional. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" is just as true today as when the phrase was originally coined. Former ZDTV and TechTV staff continue to produce content independent of the network dial. Indeed, the Internet has become the world's television, radio, newspaper, and magazine network -- with little to no barriers to entry. Given that anybody can and will produce something worth sharing, that's precisely what happens. But without a base of quality content, without a way to make connections between related content and active community members, a site is nothing more than a mundane portal. Network alumni were looking for a way to bring everyone together again (community and talent, virtually). Leo and I saw the PikSpot platform as a fantastic starting point for such efforts -- and through a loosely democratic process, the network's alumni dubbed the effort "UndoTV." UndoTV.com is using PikSpot to keep everybody connected. Upon this platform: Content is organized within groups. A new group can be setup in minutes. Members can publish text, audio, video, pictures and flash postings Content is rated and vetted by the community. This rating process helps the community maintain content relevance There's a "balance of power" foundation in place: Members can add tags, time markers, report problems, rate content Abuse at all levels is managed within the system Collaborative content is indexed: Add time markers to audio / video content which also become discussion points for comments Add tags to other members content. We just wanted to bring everybody together again - while still retaining our independence. It's our hope that the community will embrace and extend the idea of UndoTV (and that the PikSpot platform will continue to evolve to meet our needs). Cross-platform, cross-device brand management and monetising What are the opportunities for each of the conventional media types in the bold new world of mobile TV, IPTV and games? Is there a future for newspapers and what is it? Will the 30 second TV ad spot survive and if not, what will replace it and what will be the vectors of the evolutionary process? What is the significance (and future) of video blogging? Are content creators outside the US and Europe in a stronger position than ever - or at risk of being swamped by incoming content from better placed competitors? Brian Hurst advises some of Hollywood's best known media companies on these thorny issues and speaks here of his experience and insights. Brian Seth Hurst (brian.seth.hurst@emmyleadership.org) is Principal and CEO of the Opportunity Management Company, a strategic consultancy. Hurst served two terms as Chairman of the New Media Council of the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and sits on the national Board of the PGA. As a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences ("The Emmy's") he is in his second term as a Governor representing the Interactive Media Committee. Brian's company assists broadcasters and content rights holders to build initiatives that reach audiences across emerging content platforms. These range from digital and interactive television to broadband, mobile and new communications devices. His clients include PRC Direct (China), Lifetime Television, Virgin America and AOL.Com. As Managing Director of Convergence at Pittard Sullivan, Brian was instrumental in the launches of TVGuide as the first "cross-platform" brand, and of TiVo. Brian is a regular panelist and key note speaker at conferences including NATPE, NAB, CES, Digital Hollywood, MIPTV and many international events. Brian also serves as Chair of the Television Academy's Brand and Sponsorship Review Committee, and as a member of the Budget Review and Executive Committees. Konductor Platform Demonstration High Resolution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej2obn24mdE&fmt=18 Konductor specializes in content management, and has been developing a platform to integrate with Adobe tools - like Dreamweaver - without interrupting a designer's typical work flow. Konductor has also been using Adobe technologies like Flex and AIR to develop tools for the users who will actually edit the content as well. Over the last few months we have been working closely with Teknision who are developing the AIR application for our end users. It looks awesome, and it's a really good showcase of how AIR can be used in a practical way. We have been consulting with Nitobi, and developing our Dreamweaver extension. We also have our server side API, which being written in a format mirroring Adobe Document Services API as closely as possible as well, so that we have something familiar for other Adobe developers to use. http://blog.konductor.net/ Tags: computer software adobe max air flex dreamweaver cms |

Canadian Video Sharing Site Delivers Video Content to ... Toronto-based video platform mDialog lets users upload, share and watch user-generated and professional content online, on Apple TV, and on iPhones. mDialog launched its authorized iPhone application in time for the release of the iPhone 3G, and gained attention for being one of the first video sites to do so. (Check out TechChrunch's early review of the product.) CEO Greg Philpott demonstrates some of the application's features in the segment. mDialog uses the same MPEG-4 H.264 video standard as Apple, and its compatibility with Apple products could trigger its mainstream appeal. Its high-resolution video also sets it apart; mDialog is able to easily compress high-quality and large video files with its mLoader application. So far mDialog seems most useful for personal video sharing, but it is working on expanding its professional content. The company got the rights to distribute HBO web series Blood Copy and is also the online video platform for French Maid TV, which was announced earlier this week. In the clip below, the maids provide a tutorial on using the site. The site will also publish an original web series, "Cooking to Get Lucky," starting sometime this fall. Co-hosts Eden Riegel from "All My Children" and Bob Guiney from "The Bachelor" will help users cook meals to impress their dates. Cognitive Technology on a Mobile Platform Google Tech Talks May, 27 2008 ABSTRACT Mobile devices have great potential to increase independence for people with cognitive disabilities. Besides basic communication, which is itself very important, key features include location awareness, which can be used to help with public transportation, and remote management, which allows a caregiver to manage content, such as schedule information, on a user's device. A recent projects course at the University of Colorado developed promising prototypes on the Android platform, and suggested useful platform enhancements, especially relating to speech technology. Garry's Mod 10 - Asgard Teleport Platform Using the Asgard teleporter from the new SVN content of the Stargate addon, I created a teleport platform which consists of 2 teleport platforms and one controller. Stepping on the target finder on one of the two platforms will beam you to the other platform, unless the platform or the controller itself is deactivated. The 3 small green indicators above the switches show the power status of the two platforms and the whole system. The blue indicators on the controller show if there is a player on the platform, so you can decide if you want to switch it on, allowing the player to teleport. The controller will play a warning sound when there is someone on the platforms. The whole thing is available as 3 "advanced duplicator" saves and could become handy on Spacebuild servers. Zune is Bigger Than a Music Player, It's a New "Platform" We spoke with Steven Levy today at the offices of Newsweek to get his take on Microsoft's announcement of Zune, the digital music player that goes on sale this holiday season. Far from a "me too" iPod, Steven sees profound implications in this new technology - he says Zune is a strategic new direction from Microsoft -- the development of entirely new platform for content consumption and distribution. He really likes the WiFi aspect of Zune, which allows users to "beam" their music to friends, becoming "mini dejays", and thinks this aspect of Zune will be the real challenge to Apple's iPod. See this video on Beet.TV: http://www.beet.tv/2006/09/zune_is_bigger_.html Tags: Steven Levy Zune Ipod Microsoft Music WiFi |

UIQ Developer Conference - Boston UIQ Technologies had a developer conference in Boston May 10&11, 2007 where developers met with UIQ executives and representatives of several phone companies. The UIQ development platform, an attractive variety of UIQ phones, industry-standard development tools and active developer and partner communities make working with UIQ a rewarding experience for developers and content creators targeting the mobile phone market. The UIQ platform with its rich API set and strong developer community facilitates the creation of compelling applications, content and services. The platform is engineered so that the same code can run on multiple phone configurations (with or without flip, landscape or portrait, touchscreen or not, etc.) with minimal or no changes, thus increasing the lifecycle of applications and content. More applications for the UIQ platform have been sold, per phone on the market, at premium prices, than applications for any other smartphone platform. Tags: UIQ Symbian developer |

Building the Danger Hiptop: a New Mobile Internet Platform May 25, 2007 lecture by Joe Britt for the Stanford University Human-Computer Interaction Seminar (CS 547). When mobile phones became within the financial grasp of the everyman, the value was easily understood. Telephone-accessible "content" could now be enjoyed from a car, while waiting in line, or from a table at a restaurant. In this talk, Joe discusses several key aspects of the platform's development and shares the design philosophy applied by the team. Strong belief in the importance of hardware/software integration and an organic, iterative design process were critical for success. Lessons learned at companies like Apple, General Magic, and WebTV provided the team with a context for partitioning a complex problem across hardware, software, and a powerful back-end service.
