The Saturdays Super Busking in Covent Garden http://www.crisis.org.uk/coventgarden to donate The Saturdays brought a large dose of shameless pop to Covent Garden on Monday 1st December. Frankie, Rochelle, Mollie, Vanessa and Una knocked the tinsel of every Christmas tree in London, performing 4 tunes including hit tracks Chasing Lights and Up. The ladies wowed the crowds and in return the crowds gave generously to Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people. This Christmas Crisis is concentrating on opening nine shelters across London to help homeless people over the festive period. 1.Nellie Melba FAREWELL PERFORMANCE.Covent GardenOpera.1926. 1 MUSICAL, and RECORDING HISTORY. MELBA'S FAREWELL!! CLIP 1. La Boheme. Act 3 Entrate...Ce Rodolfo? Act 3 La Boheme. Donde lieta usci. Addio dolce svegliare alla mattina. HISTORY! This is part of Melba's Final Farewell Performance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. It is also a historical technical breakthrough as it was only possible due to the introduction of electrical recordings in 1925/26. It is the first broadcast on radio of a performance outside the recording/radio studio. A land cable was run between the Royal Opera House, and Gloucester House, London, where the recordings were started and stopped virtually 'blind'. Hence the abrupt endings to some of the pieces. Unfortunately some of the singers were under contract to other recording companies, and were forbidden to permit their voices being recorded by a rival company. That explains why my clips are so heavily edited. The entire evening was fully staged and costumed---part of Romeo et Juliette, Act 4 of Otello, including Ave Maria piena di grazia etc.I do have the Romeo and Juliet/Otello recordings. Will post these if there is interest. The evening concluded with the third and fourth acts of La Boheme. Gaps in all the pieces recorded, due to what I said earlier. Melba was 66 years of age. The Australian tenor, John Brownlee is included in these clips. In the presence of their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary. The House was ablaze with jewels, and tiaras! More of La Boheme in clips 2 and 3, to follow. My clip 4 will be speeches from the opera stage, by Lord Stanley, and Dame Nellie Melba at the close of the performance. These recordings, of Boheme, (and also Romeo et Juliet/Otello before the intermission), came into my family's possession many years ago. Enjoy listening to a magical historical musical event. Plisetskaya Covent Garden This was an encore given during the Gala ballet concert for Maya Pliteskaya, who was celebrating her 80th birthday. I recorded this on Sunday 12 February, 2006. NB: The dancer is Plisetskaya!! Can you belive that she is 80?! I took this video on my digital camera. I don't think there were any other recordings from this historic evening. She is the Bolshoi's Prima Ballerina Assoluta. It was an amazing evening, with some excellent dancing. Tags: Ballet Maya Plisetskaya Prima Ballerina Assoluta Bolshoi Kirov Royal Covent Garden |
