Duxbury thinks green with crematory By APRIL DEMBOSKY The Patriot Ledger DUXBURY -- Duxbury's next environmentally conscious move may involve the dead. The town's alternative energy committee is looking for efficiency ies and has its eyes on the crematory in Mayflower Cemetery. "We have four furnaces that run pretty much 12 hours a day," Selectmen Chairman Andre Martecchini said. "It's a very large amount of time that they're burning gas. The idea is to be able to capture that heat and do something with it." With 10 to 16 cremations on most days -- about 3,000 a year -- Duxbury Crematory is one of the busiest in the country. and Its nearest competitors are in Boston and Attleboro. With rising fuel and maintenance costs and predictions of an increase in demand, the town is looking to give the 30-year-old facility a total makeover. The alternative energy committee's first priority is making sure the furnaces are using as little fuel and wasting as little energy as possible, Martecchini said. It also wants to look into the possibility of redirecting the excess heat produced in the 1,600-degree cremation process to the cemetery offices or nearby buildings. "We have a fire station nearby; we have a senior center; we have town hall," Martecchini said. Instead of dumping the excess heat into the air, "we could use it for either heating a building or to generate power or electricity for the same facilities." Over time, officials hope they can save money by renovating the crematory. Natural gas bills are $6,500 to $10,000 a month while annual repairs to the internal brick lining cost $30,000 for each of the four chambers. Still, the town-owned crematory is a moneymaker for Duxbury. And cremation is expected to become an even more common choice. ''As cemetery space gets more valuable and expensive, the cost of cremation is going to look real good,'' Martecchini said. The committee's exploration into renovating rebuilding the crematory is in the early stage. Town officials will be looking for the most environmentally friendly, cost-effective design when they request proposals from architects. Money-saving designs Structural changes to the crematory can save on fuel and reduce air pollution, especially with designs that emerged after the Clean Air Act was passed in 1990, said Paul Rahill, environmental consultant to the Cremation Association of North America. Developments in chamber lining materials, like better insulation in a home, help prevent heat loss, so the furnaces burn less fuel and emit less carbon monoxide. Expanded secondary chambers provide more space for the smoke and odor from the cremation to be burned again and new optical scanners in the smokestack ensure that all particles and gases are fully burned before the exhaust leaves the chimneys. "It's a cleansing process," Rahill said. "The bigger space allows emissions to be cleansed more thoroughly before being emitted to the air." Some devices take the guesswork out of operating the crematories and leave less room for human error. The operator answers four questions on the "logic controller" about body size, casket type, sex, and what cremation of the day it is. "The equipment then makes all the decisions. It sets up the burners, the timers, and the air controls for maximum efficiency," Rahill says. "It's like a treadmill that measures CO2, breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, then gives feedback and adjusts the settings." Harnessing heat Duxbury's hope to recycle the crematory's thermal exhaust to heat municipal buildings may be more difficult to realize because heat recovery equipment would cost $50,000 to $100,000. To reuse heat, the town would need to purchase a heat recovery unit to transfer the crematory's heat to a steam or water pipe. A pumping system would push the steam or water from the crematory to a nearby building, where a second heat recovery unit transfers the heat back into the air. "The problem is that heat recovery equipment is very, very expensive," Rahill said. "You have to have a constant use for the heat to justify the cost of the equipment." Duxbury is also considering a co-generation system that would convert excess heat into electricity and transfer it to the power lines. The town would then get reimbursed from the power company for its contribution to the power supply. "Instead of us buying power at retail cost from NStar, it becomes a cost savings to the town," Martecchini said. Rahill isn't so sure about that idea. Of the various human and pet crematories he has known to have considered installing the technology, none have. The facilities must be burning at least 12 hours a day to make the investment worth it, he said, and have a consistent need for the exhaust heat or electricity. The only places he knows that have done it are industrial facilities, like hospitals, that have boilers or incinerators burning 24 hours a day. Duxbury officials will have to study proposals and run the numbers calculations to determine if the energy efficient crematory makeover is financially realistic. "When we're looking at alternative energy, we're trying to be creative," Martecchini said. "But it has to be cost effective."
