Cumberland Gap Lew Dite with his mountain banjo. A song Frank Proffitt taught me to love. My mountain banjo was made for me in 2001 by Clifford Glenn of Sugar Grove, North Carolina. I went to NC to pick it up in person. Here are some photos from that occasion. Clifford demonstrated the new banjo by playing "John Hardy" and I've included an excerpt. I am still struggling with the clawhammer style of banjo playing all these years later. I put in Clifford's demo so that you can hear how it should be played... all that being said, I really enjoy playing the banjo and in particular Clifford's mountain banjo. The Cumberland Trio- I Wish I Were A Babe From their live renunion concert of Sept 24, 2004, Back Where We Began, The Cumberland Trio performs their signature "gentle protest" song from the folk era of the early '60s about man's inhumanity to man, I Wish I Were A Babe. The lyrics to this great anthem are just incredible, the song having been written in early 1964 by Trio member Jerre Haskew's wife, Barbara Short Haskew, while rocking her then 3 month old baby daughter and watching with sorrow and disbelief the television coverage of the terrible Civil Rights strife occurring in Birmingham, AL, where African-American Churches were being burned and countless batterings of innocent black people in the streets by Birmingham police were occuring. This is a POWERFUL yet beautiful song, with the Trio's brilliant tenor, Tom Kilpatrick, singing the solo verses.
