In 1998 the French Government transferred its shares in Dassault Aviation (45.76%) to Aerospatiale. On 10 July 2000, Aérospatiale-Matra merged with other European companies to form EADS. Dassault Mirage 4000 The Mirage 4000 was a prototype jet fighter developed by Dassault-Breguet as a twin engine version of their Mirage 2000. Both planes have much in common, including their engines (SNECMA M53-2), their Delta shape wings and their semi-circular air intake. The plane first flew in 1979. It was financed as a private venture by Dassault, possibly with Saudi Arabian money. The Mirage 4000 was comparable in size to the United States F-15 Eagle, and would have made an excellent long-range interceptor. Its weight and ordnance capacity also would have made it a very good fighter-bomber. In the early 1980s Dassault ended the program shortly after the Saudis chose the F-15C as their preferred aircraft. The French Air Force preferred to concentrate on the Mirage 2000, leaving Dassault with no customers. Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard The Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard is a French carrier-borne strike fighter in service with the French and Argentine Navies. A small number were also flown by the Iraqi Air Force for a brief period during the Iran-Iraq War. It is a development of the earlier Étendard IVM that was originally to have been replaced by a navalised version of the SEPECAT Jaguar, the Jaguar M, until this plan was stalled by political problems. The prototype first flew on 28 October 1974. The French Navy initially ordered 60 of the new model, which were delivered in June 1978 and the Argentinian Navy ordered 14. The Super Étendard had been developed in parallel with a new air-launched version of Aérospatiale's anti-shipping missile, the AM 39 Exocet, and these were supplied to Argentina as well. At the time of the Falklands War, Argentina had taken delivery of five Super Étendards and five Exocets. All five of the missiles were used during the conflict, with one missile destroying HMS Sheffield and one the supply ship MV Atlantic Conveyor (the Exocet that damaged HMS Glamorgan was a land-launched version). Five Super Étendards were loaned to Iraq in 1983 while the country waited on deliveries of the Dassault Mirage F1s that had been ordered. These aircraft used Exocets to great success against Iranian tankers in the Persian Gulf before being returned to France in 1985. Dassault Mirage III The Dassault Mirage III is a supersonic fighter aircraft designed in France by Dassault Aviation during the 1950s, and manufactured both in France and a number of other countries. It was a successful fighter aircraft, being sold to many air forces around the world and remaining in production for over a decade. Some of the world's smaller air forces still fly Mirage IIIs or variants as front-line equipment today, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Gabon, Libya, Pakistan (largest operator), and Venezuela.The Mirage III family grew out of French government studies begun in 1952 that led in early 1953 to a specification for a lightweight, all-weather interceptor capable of climbing to 18,000 m (59,040 ft) in six minutes and able to reach Mach 1.3 in level flight. Dassault's response to the specification was the Mystère-Delta 550, a sporty-looking little jet that was to be powered by twin Armstrong Siddeley MD30R Viper afterburning turbojets, each with thrust of 9.61 kN (2,160 lbf). A SEPR liquid-fuel rocket motor was to provide additional burst thrust of 14.7 kN (3,300 lbf). The aircraft had a tailless delta configuration, with a 5% chord (ratio of airfoil thickness to length) and 60 degree sweep. The tailless delta configuration has a number of limitations. The lack of a horizontal stabilizer means flaps cannot be used, resulting in a long take-off run and a high landing speed. The delta wing itself limits maneuverability; and suffers from buffeting at low altitude, due to the large wing area and resulting low wing loading. However, the delta is a simple and pleasing design, easily built and robust, capable of high speed in a straight line, and with plenty of space in the wing for fuel storage. The first prototype of the Mystere-Delta, without afterburning engine or rocket motor and an absurdly large vertical tailfin, flew on 25 June 1955. After some redesign, reduction of the tailfin to more rational size, installation of afterburners and rocket motor, and renaming to Mirage I, the prototype attained Mach 1.3 in level flight without the rocket, and Mach 1.6 with the rocket lit in late 1955.The first major production model of the Mirage series, the Mirage IIIC, first flew in October 1960. The IIIC was largely similar to the IIIA, though a little under a half meter longer and brought up to full operational fit. The IIIC was a single-seat interceptor, with an Atar 09B turbojet engine, featuring an "eyelet" style variable exhaust. The Mirage IIIC was armed with twin 30 mm DEFA revolver-type cannon, fitted in the belly with the gun ports under the air intakes. Early Mirage IIIC production had three stores pylons, one under the fuselage and one under each wing, but a second outboard pylon was quickly added to each wing, for a total of five. The outboard pylon was intended to carry a Sidewinder air-to-air missile (AAM), later replaced by Matra Magic.The Mirage IIIC was exported to Israel as the Mirage IIICJ, to South Africa as the Mirage IIICZ, and to Switzerland as the Mirage IIICS, to which one was sold in preparation for license construction. Dassault Mirage F-1CG H.A.F The Dassault Mirage F1 is a single-seat air-superiority fighter and attack aircraft built by Dassault Aviation of France.Dassault designed the Mirage F1 as the successor to its Mirage III and Mirage 5 fighters. Unlike its predecessors, it has a swept wing mounted high on the fuselage, as well as a conventional tail surface.The first prototype, which was developed by Dassault using its own funds, made its maiden flight on 23 December 1966.The type was officially accepted by the French Air Force in May 1967, at which time three further prototypes were ordered. With the greater thrust of its afterburning SNECMA Atar 9K-50 turbojet, the F1 easily outclassed the Mirage III. The later Cyrano IV-1 version added a limited look-down capability. The Mirage F1 entered French Air Force service in May 1973 when the first production version was delivered. Initially, the aircraft was only armed with two 30 mm internal cannons, but in 1976 the R530 medium-range air-to-air missile was released for use. A year later, the R550 Magic followed. Desarrollo Una vez que Francia abandonó el proyecto multinacional EFA, dejó clara su intención de adoptar y desarrollar el Dassault Rafale en 1987 como su futuro avión de caza. En abril de 1988 el gobierno francés decidió, por diversos problemas, no participar en el programa Eurofighter Typhoon. En lugar de eso, decidió alentar la producción de un caza francés que todavía estaba en proceso de desarrollo: el Dassault Rafale. El primer prototipo de la familia Rafale fue el Rafale A, que voló por primera vez en julio de 1988. La empresa lo había construido sin que mediara ningún pedido del gobierno o de las fuerzas armadas, como un programa privado, ya que era un aparato para testear tecnologías. El Rafale A voló en esa ocasión con dos turbofans General Electric F404-GE-400. Hacía un amplio uso de materiales compuestos y aleaciones especiales en su célula, y su diseño era muy ágil y estable, con alas en delta y canards. Muchos aviones de la compañía Dassault utilizan alas en delta, de modo que seguramente el paso hacia la aerodinámica del Rafale no fue tan traumática. Podía llevar 6 misiles aire-aire y dispararlos en rápida sucesión, además de poseer la capacidad de albergar sistemas de alerta por voz y activados por voz. Características generales El sistema electrónico de guerra del Rafale es el Spectra, de Thomson-CSF; éste incorpora transmisores de estado sólido, radar y alerta de láser, alerta de misiles, sistemas de detección e interferencia. El sistema optrónico es el OSF de búsqueda infrarroja y un sistema de seguimiento instalado en la nariz del aparato, y el receptor de alerta láser DAL. Este sistema optrónico lleva a cabo las tareas de búsqueda, identificación de blancos, telemetría, imágenes de televisión e infrarrojas, discriminación automática de blancos y seguimiento. Posee con un receptor de navegación TLS 2000 de Thomson-CSF, que se utiliza para la fase de aproximación del vuelo. Este sistema integra un Sistema de Instrumentos de Aterrizaje, Sistema de Microondas de Aterrizaje y un medidor de distancias de radio VHF omnidireccional. El altímetro radar AHV 17 del avión puede ser utilizado durante el vuelo de muy baja altitud. El Rafale también cuenta con un receptor de navegación aérea táctica para obtener datos de navegación en vuelo y como ayuda para el aterrizaje. A diferencia de las otras versiones, el Rafale M está equipado con el radar Thomson CSF Detexis RBE-2, que tiene un alcance de 100 kilómetros, por lo que el Rafale puede ir equipado con misiles del tipo "dispara y olvida"; además, el radar tiene capacidad mira-abajo/dispara-abajo. En el modo de detección aérea, puede percibir y rastrear 10 blancos y establecer contacto con 8 de ellos; en el modo de detección terrestre, puede dibujar en la cabina del piloto un pequeño mapa del terreno. El nuevo avión de Dassault posee el primer interrogador-transponder IFF que utiliza tecnología de escaneo electrónico, un SB25A de Thomson-CSF. El sistema de control de vuelo fly-by-wire estabiliza al Rafale en los tres ejes, ya que su diseño es deliberadamente inestable aerodinámicamente. Este sistema permite un pilotaje cómodo y natural en todas las situaciones de vuelo, ataque, despegue y aterrizaje, incluso en portaaviones, ya que incorpora un sistema de control de vuelo a muy bajo nivel acoplado al sistema de disparo, que funciona en paralelo en tres canales digitales con un canal de respaldo analógico. Los materiales compuestos suman un 24% de la nave, casi un cuarto de la masa de la célula, y 70% del resto, como ser el fuselaje trasero, paneles de las alas, timón y elevones. Designed in the late seventies as a lightweight fighter for the Armée de l'Air, it evolved into a successful multirole aircraft now in service in 9 countries with more than 600 Mirages built. Using the concept of the delta wing interceptor seen on the Dassault Mirage III, Dassault built a new fighter jet design. This configuration is not ideal with regard to maneuverability, low-altitude flight, and distance required for take-off and landing, but has advantages in high-speed flight characteristics, simplicity of construction, low radar signature and internal volume. The aircraft has a redundant fly-by-wire automatic flight control system, providing a high degree of agility and easier handling, together with stability and precise control in all situations. Fighter's Airframe is naturally unstable, and so it is coupled with FBW commands to obtain the best agility; however, in override mode it is still possible to exceed a 270 deg/sec roll rate and allows the aircraft to reach 11 g (within the 12 g structural limit), instead of nine when engaged. The Rafale is being produced both for land-based use with the French Air Force and for carrier-based naval operations with the French Navy. It has also been marketed for export. While several countries have expressed interest in the Rafale, there have been no foreign sales as of yet. The Rafale is now in service in the trials and training role with the French Air Force (CEAM/EC 5/330) and EC 1/7 at Saint-Dizier is expected to receive a nucleus of 8--10 Rafale F2s during the Summer of 2006, and it looks set to enter full operational service (with robust air-to-air and stand off air-to-ground precision attack capabilities) during mid-2007 (when EC 1/7 will have about 20 aircraft, 15 two-seaters and 5 single-seaters). The aircraft is already in limited operational service with the French Navy (Flotille 12F) in the air-to-air role, and has undertaken a great deal of air-to-ground trials and evaluation work. The first Rafale deployed in a combat zone were those of the French Navy during Opération Héraclès, the French participation in Operation Enduring Freedom. They flew from the Charles de Gaulle over Afghanistan as soon as 2002, but the F1 standard precluded air-to-ground missions and the Rafale did not see any action. In 2007, after a "crash program" enhancement some six Rafale were given the ability to drop laser-guided bombs, in view of engaging them in Afghanistan. Three of these aircraft belonging to the Air Force were deployed to Dushanbe in Tadjikistan, while the three others were Rafale Marine of the Navy on board the Charles De Gaulle.the first mission occurred on March 12, and the first GBU-12 was launched on March 28 in support of embattled Dutch troops in Southern Afghanistan, marking the operational début of the Rafale. However, they still have to rely on Mirage 2000Ds and Super Entendards carrying laser designation pods to illuminate their targets. On 6 December 2007 a French Air Force twin-seat aircraft with a single occupant, on a training flight from the Saint-Dizier base, crashed in an uninhabited part of the Neuvic parish in the Correze area, with the loss of its pilot. This was the first loss of a Rafale. On 10 January 2008, on RTL, Minister of Defence Hervé Morin stated that the cause of the crash was "pilot disorientation". The cockpit uses a Martin-Baker Mark 16F "zero-zero" ejection seat, i.e. capable of being used at zero speed and zero altitude. The seat is inclined 29 degrees backwards to improve G force tolerance. The canopy hinges open to the right. An on-board oxygen generating system is provided to eliminate the need for multiple oxygen canisters. The cockpit includes a wide-angle holographic Head Up Display (HUD) and two head-down flat-panel colour multifunction displays ( MFDs). Display interaction is by means of touch input for which the pilot wears silk-lined leather gloves. In addition, in full development, the pilot will have a Helmet-Mounted Display ( HMD). The pilot flies the aircraft with a side-stick controller mounted on his right and a throttle on his left. These incorporate multiple `hands on throttle and stick' (HOTAS) controls. The Rafale cockpit is also planned to include Direct Voice Input (DVI), allowing for pilot action by voice commands. Radar Signature Reduction features Although not a true stealth aircraft, the Rafale has reduced radar signature measures like many of its contemporaries such as the Super Hornet and Typhoon. According to Dassault, while most of the stealth design features are classified, extensive use of composite materials and serrated patterns on the trailing edges of the wings and canards help to reduce the radar cross section.
